JollySipper Posted January 9, 2018 Share Posted January 9, 2018 Here's what I'm working on now.... I'm going to try back-dating this kit to build a custom that may have been done back in the day. I'll be using the stock front suspension, which necessitated using the Sedan chassis, since it has the cross member that is missing from the Coupe's frame. Also using the awesome louvered hood from the Sedan......... I'll be mounting the brakes to the frame instead of the firewall...... the wheels and tires are from the Moebius '56 300B Let me know what you think! Plan is to use this gray from DupliColor, that is if I can find some at the parts store. A question for you guys...... Would a custom car in the '60s have an MSD box for ignition, or just a coil? From Wikipedia: "MSD Ignition was the first company in the world to experiment with Multiple Spark Discharge for the ignition system of internal combustion engines in 1970. One would think that as much racing went on thru the '50s and '60s they would have developed MSD before then........ Some progress to show, basic frame stuff painted, and a final ride height check..... I lowered the front by using a spring with less arc than the kit piece, the rear is out of box...... Now I'm working on getting the body parts to line up as they should. I just need to get the main body to nestle down into the fenders, then the front pieces should line up...... Not really. Some history is in order here. Magnetos and multi-coil ignitions were quite sufficient for the compression ratios and cams that were in use at the time. HOWEVER...the capacitive-discharge (CD) ignition system had been in development for many years, but advances in solid-state electronics (NON-tube type) were required before a reliable system could live for long in an automotive or aircraft environment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_discharge_ignition The multiple-discharge ignition is a development of the solid-state CD ignition system, and followed it quite soon. Another similar unit is the Multi-Strike by Mallory, and is much the same as MSD technology. Higher compression pressures and more radical cams that provided very uneven mixtures at lower RPMs required an ignition system that could fire a charge consistently in these more difficult conditions. I really like it, nice color and sheen. I also want to use some '48 Ford bumpers, we'll see how it works out..... The steering wheel from the '56 300B will replace the Grant GT wheel that comes in the kit. Thanks for your interest and for looking in..............! With it and the interior done, all I really have left is to paint the body, then it's assembly time! I need to decide if I want to run the kit's headers, or a pair of wrapped headers from a nascar kit........ This is the color I wanted to paint this one. As you can see, the can was no good! I guess it wasn't meant to be...... I'll try to find some perfect match like I usually use and can get good results from........ Primer may get another coat before wet sanding with #2000, then it's on to color coats......... The last one I built I used the whole frame from the Revell 40 standard and on the other two I cut up the frames from the monogram 40 p/u for the rear suspension and the front crossmembers. Had to go with my second color choice, which I think will look pretty good with the red interior....... I have some wax/polish that's made by Formula1 (it's in a big yellow bottle) that I may go over it with once it's fully cured feel free to comment, and thank you for checking it out!
