gregbbear Posted July 12, 2008 Author Share Posted July 12, 2008 Yesterday, I did start on my RAT! in between the "benetton from hell" sessions. I spent all day with my kids, so no progress. I'll try and get some photos posted soon. I spent some time trying how to figure out how to put a 427 from a cobra kit into a '32 ford. I think I am going to go another route. I have some cool ideas though. I have some wheels/tires/brakes from a toyota ts020 LM, that my son destroyed a few years ago. I some other stuff from a C5R, bugatti eb-110 and porsche gt-1 that were also destroyed in that same "session". He's lucky he's a cute kid! Hey Nick, why I didn't suggest German cars, because it would just be unfair if somebody broke out a porsche or bmw! Bazooka to a gunfight, eh? As for my import, I am so disappointed with the condition of my BRE Z. Strada has a cool Celica, but I don't know if it is curbside or not. I have to have an engine to be able to "express myself". As for individual expression, so far, all I can say is "wow". I am in over my head here. At least the body is primer! The "Challenge" portion is how they choose to demonstrate their political and religious beliefs. My suggestion of Street Rods was such that it is a very open and unrestricted venue for this since Street Rods have been built and displayed through many trends for over 80 years! However, you build what ever you want! did they really call them street rods back then? just rods right! I really don't think a right wing inspired VW is right.......... In other words... build what you want as long is it demonstrates your political, religious and/or sexual preferences. Since it started with Japanese cars... and then rat rods... and then grew to street rods... I suggest anything goes and have yet to hear anyone complain. Incidentally I learned to drive on a 1966 Corvair Corsa with the Fetch Sprint option. (Are you familiar with that one?) Anyway, my Dad bought it from a buddy who needed the money for $500 bucks in '69. Anyway, we had it for 12 years and I loved driving something that quick and handled as well as a Porsche... if you know what I mean? Dale, I love it... Keep going! Maybe a barn-find Crown rear V8 conversion in gray or black primer, 70s 'storm-door' sunroof, DIY radiused wheel wells, steelies... mistreated 'Vairs could usually be kinda ratty lookin' in their own right. Nader, me, and Corvairs: My grandfather on my dad's side was a low-paid but very earnest small-town attorney in Oak Ridge Tenn. from the 40s to about 1982. On his 65th birthday in 1966 he treated himself to a new, marina blue '66 Monza, 110 horse, 4-speed... just an exquisite car! I was in high school a few years after he bought it, we lived in Huntsville, Alabama, maybe 210 miles away, and when I'd wheedle a summer week or two out of my folks I'd go to Oak Ridge & spend time with my Grandparents. I usually chose to act like a spoiled brat, but my grandparents were cool and let me drive & have use of their cars. Gee, how hip was I? During my visit one summer great noise was made in OR about the impending visit of Mr. Nader, who I thoroughly hated due to his famed treatment of GM and the 'Vair. ( I'd had a '61 as my first car.) Somehow I found out that his itinerary included the local landmark Atomic Energy Museum, so I made it my business to park that gorgeous blue Monza coupe right in front as I attended the Nader lecture... a total bore, BTW. Got a 'look' or two as I exited the museum, BUT got a different 'look' when My Grandfather saw the pic of his car as background for Nader's arrival, on the front page in the local paper the next morning. Here's an idea, we can do this type of car with liberal/conservative slant. Strictly Traditional for the conservatives, and Modern Rat Rod for the Liberals. There even is a little middle ground. Mixing of parts should land you in the middle somewhere, depending on what parts. Good, bad, indifferent? Not to stir things up or anything... but I think the sides are reversed. True card-carrying, flag-burning, Sheen-for-Pres libs hate anything that's individualized, don't they? I see lots of dingy clapped out first-gen Saturn sl-1s plastered with, (some even held together with), Earth First/Bush Lied/War kills/'anything leftist' bumper stickers. And the Sacramento socialists? They are the ones who throw fits at the very thought of an OLD CAR!(okay, unless it's their own first-gen Saturn...) They want'em all CRUSHED instantly!!! (even if they aren't driven!) Go to a cruise-in, though, and all the gray hairs have the old musclecars and street rods. What greenie worth his earth shoes would allow someone to BUILD a car in his own garage? EEEEK!!! I can see the car distinction if it breaks along 'music preferences', though Just a small observation... I found a built-up Mercedes Benz 300SL for a buck at the last club meeting and thought the engine would be cool for a hot rod. I also wanted to build a truckster and this is the perfect opportunity to combine them and do something a bit off the beaten path. I like a different route for many things and this fits perfectly! I'm planning on FI and a prominent header. I'm just kicking around ideas with the body. I have a parts box to dig through yet , so expect change there. The Ala-Kart knock-off cab is cool but I want something even more "off-the-beaten-path". I may do some cutting and splicing..... We'll see what the parts pile holds! I would have hogged some glue in there and then weathered the heck out of it thus hiding the flash. But I am glad to hear you building.. now, can we see it too? Fotki is easy to use and you can get a free account. Photobucket is easier to use but the don't seem to lay the files out in any organized way. I spent last night working on this rather than poking fun at liberals. Got the floor pan cut from the fender unit and attached to the body proper. Firewall added.... now I have to scratchbuild the rest of the floor. Engine now has heads, intake and two Model Car Garage resin 97's. Whoo hoo! (Looks like I gotta spend some time filing and sanding that two-piece oil pan.... sheesh, why didn't Revell do the oil pan as a seperate piece for such a well detailed kit as the '48 Woody turned out to be? I do however have a Corvair story. My first car was a 1962 Corvair convertible. Second car was a 1966 GTO with trips, but that's another story. So my date and I are tooling to the "cinema" when the car fills with a thick black smoke. We bale out and I stand looking at my $600 investment literally going up in smoke when a 4dr Chevelle screeches to a halt and a guy leaps out. He starts screaming "I know what it is, I know what it is" while waving a box wrench in the air. Seems pre-63 Corvairs would cough up their "fan" belt allowing the oil puddled on the cylinders to reach the smoking point. A quick lesson later we were on our way. Only Chevy I ever owned. Jairus Posted July 16, 2008 Share Posted July 16, 2008 Yeah, the Corvair was a strange machine to be sure. Dad had to change the push rod tube seals more than a few times. (He hated oil on the driveway... still does!) In all the years of driving that Corsa I never threw a fan belt... .but the fuel pump stopped working once. I had a bottle opener in the glovebox but no tools. With the bottle opener I removed the top of the fuel pump (5 screws) removed the two valves... noticing that one had a broken plastic cage which allowed the disc valve to drop down. By reversing the two valve cages (one mounted up and the other mounted down) I managed to get the pump back together again in 10 minutes and back on the road. Never replaced that pump either.... hmmmm. Hey, Virgil! Where's your project? Actually I only work on my car for an hour a day. The rest of the time is spent painting slotcar bodies, laying out brochures, soldering, brush lettering, scratchbuilding stuff for other people.
