"Stranger Things" Hawkins Power & Light Van

Recommended Posts

Built from AMT's Chevy Rescue Van, updated to early/mid 1980s design with custom grille, bumpers, roof, and interior. Mirrors are resin bits from Modelhaus, and the decals are my own custom. There are a few things I'd do differently if I had to do it over again, but overall I'm happy with the results. Any comments/criticisms welcome!

Love this kind of stuff.......more details on the changes plez!!

OK, you asked for it :D

The grille was a resin copy of the A-Team van grille, with the guts cut out and rebuilt using styrene rod and wire. The headlights were also cut out and replaced by clear resin copies. Roof ribs were half-round styrene stock, tapered at both ends and arranged according to the A-Team van (minus the sunroof). The rear bumper started out as the front bumper from an MPC Blazer, but since it had the right basic shape just needed the grille guard removed and was good to go. All of the original trim was shaved, and new badges were made as decals to reflect the newer style. The rear windows are black vinyl, which I discovered looked remarkably close to factory blackout on a previous diecast that needed a sunroof.

Inside, the dash was built from sheet styrene, metal rod, and Tamiya 2-part epoxy putty. Finding reference pics was harder than I expected when I started, so there were a few places where I had to make some guesses. PE, the kit's 2-way radio, a Monte Carlo steering wheel, parts box seats, an aftermarket cup, and the clipboard from Revell's Caprice taxi were used to finish detailing it. It's really hard to get photos through those side windows, this was the closest I could come:

Very nice job on that Van! I like what you did with the grille, in fact it's the same thing as I'll be doing on mine as I want to replicate my former daily driver and I already have a couple of A-Team Van grilles to start with... Your build turned out very nice. The overall look is spot on, especially I like the black steel wheels on it. They just fit perfectly to one of these.

I like the interior with it's "lived in" look.  Where did you source the drive-thru cup?

It's a slightly modified piece from an aftermarket drink set I bought at HobbyLink Japan: https://www.hlj.com/1-24-scale-miniature-spice-1-24-drink-set-tacms-001

This is very cool! But I think you need to build a bookend for this van ?

If Round 2 ever reissues their Blazer, this is going to happen. Right now I have Jada's diecast Blazer filling the role, but there is a lot of room for improvement...
