Wheel I.D. Help, Please

Recommended Posts

I know that one! They're from the original AMT annual '66 Vette roadster. If they're not, they're very similar to those wheels. I've been carefully hoarding a couple sets of those and am planning on using them on some retro-stalgia '60s custom builds.

That looks like them, thanks.

Oh yeah. I been carefully collecting a set of all the '66 custom parts and hope to build a completely box-stock '66 custom in the very near future. (I have a body with missing windshield frame and some other damage that's still pretty nice but too far gone to bring back to factory stock.)

FYI...to anyone out there who wants to clone an early Hot Wheels car in 1/25 scale, they're perfect.  Yea, I know....useless info....but I had fun with it.

With the MPC Tiger Shark soon to arrive, I'd argue it's quite relevant for those wanting to build a 1/25 scale Python.

After a bit of research, the closest real wheel i could find which patched is the Rader DBR 800M. http://www.akhwheels.com/pages/showWheel.php?pk=991

Not an exact match, but close, I think. I've had no luck searching with "Road Runner" name AMT used on the end of the '66 Vette Convertible box...yet.

Now that you mention it, I think the instruction sheet calls them "Cal" or "Cal Custom" Road Runner wheels. And I seem to recall trying to find something about them under that name with a similar lack of success.

Interestingly, I recently found one of mine with several wheels I lent to Brad for duplication in the early '90s, so it's very possible that R&M of Maryland offers these, or did at some point. I know they cloned my '66 Charger and '68 Camaro dog dish wheels and this was with them, so maybe, just maybe....

Yep...I just checked my kit.  The instruction sheet calls them "Cal Road Runners".  A Google search turned up nothing.

2) I think this wheel and disc wheel cover are from the AMT '32 Ford 5-window kit?:

Think the chrome wires are from the original-issue AMT Deuce roadster. The one from 1959 in the yellow box. That's probably where the Moon discs are from too. Tires in your pics are from something else...

Pretty sure the 1st wire wheel is from an original issue AMT Cobra Roadster. The rim detail is slightly different in newer issues.

Thanks, guys. I was just impressed with how precisely that disc is, and how well it snuggles down into the wheel to minimize the amount of "lip" which can be seen. Much nicer than the Monogram Green Hornet style discs.

Is this one of the custom wheels from the AMT (well, Ertl era MPC) '69 Olds Cutlass 442 kit? I want to say it isn't, but it's been a long time since I had that kit in hand and I can't find a good close-up image online. The spokes have a sharp peak, so they're not from the MPC '67 Charger kit, and they are definitely Ertl era grey plastic:

I have few more wheel covers and wheels I could use some help indentifying, please. I think most are Ford except for the lone Mercury (#4) wheel cover.

  1. '67-8 Ford Thunderbird
  2. Jo-Han '63 Olds Starfire
  3. Custom wheelcover from the AMT '64 El Camino
  4. AMT '63 Mercury, both full-size and Meteor
  5.  AMT '71-'73 Mustang
  6. '71 Ford Pinto Promo
  7. Revell '69 Mach 1 Mustang
  8. MPC '69 Mustang

Left wheel, #5, is deep dish style and look to be modern plastic. #6, at right, is from a promo I suspect, with the massive metal axle mounting boss...JO-HAN Maverick, maybe?:

Somewhere I've got the stock wheels and tires from the JoHan '69 Maverick promo, and I don't remember them looking like that. But it has been a while since I've seen them.

It looks like they are from a Pinto promo:

#5 is AMT '71-'73 Mustang.  It's supposed to represent the dog dish cap with the black stripe near the edge, with the trim ring that covers the rest of the wheel.  But the cap is way undersize.  The annual kits had five of them (probably to mold extras to allow for breakage when stockpiling parts for the promotional models).  One is still in the reissued Warren Tope racing version.

#7 is Revell '69 Mustang.  #8 looks like MPC '69 Mustang (annual kit version).
