regular guy
Saw a '36 Ford roadster on a boxtop and got all excited about it. Looked at the '36 Ford AMT kit out and it does not look like it will work. The fenders are a part of the frame. Jimmy Flinstone has a NICE '34 Ford coupe fenderless body. Ford coupes with the firewall supposed to be covered and the rear fender lips have a nice nostalgia look. More so than the other Ford coupes. That's this enthusiast's opinion. regular guy
' Is this meant to be some sort of "review"? ' Exactomundo! Current AMT '36 Ford coupe cannot be built as a fenderless 40's 50's hot rod. Sooo. Get a '34 body and put it on some '32 rails and down the road you go. Jimmy Flintstone '36 body won't work either. They did some kind of update to the rear. Looking into '37 and '40 and seeing if they can be done topless and fenderless. Lean and mean! This is the 3-window...an ancient gluebomb, but virtually identical to the current kit. Most of the tooling is the same. The same basic idea gets you a 5-window (lots of these older kits around, and not as highly sought after as the 3-window...and except for the body shell, they're also identical to the 3-window). 1 hour ago, regular guy said: Sooo. regular guy
I meant roadsters. Thank you for pointing that out. Fixed first post. Here's Jimmy Flintstone '34 Roadster body. http://jimmyflintstonestudios.com/?product=nb80-1934-ford-roadster '32 rails will work. There are tons of '32 kits around. AMT '36 Ford current reissue cannot be built as a fenderless roadster 'as is'. Once you bring cutting the kit into the mix that's a different situation. '34 body on '32 rails is readily doable. 50's paint scheme would be purple paint job with white interior. Some white flame pinstripes would look good. The '36 Ford includes a "roadster" cowl, windshield and door tops. And my '36 above isn't "cut". The body is simply channeled down over the frame rails. The fenders are NOT part of the frame. 14 minutes ago, regular guy said: I meant roadsters. Thank you for pointing that out. Fixed first post. I STILL don't know why you want to use '32 rails. They're several inches shorter than '32 rails, and '34 Fords on '32 rails usually look dorky. There's plenty of '34 kits around too. Ace-Garageguy
That Flintstone body, by the way, is based on the old Monogram 1/24 '34 Ford. Put it on 1/25 '32 Ford rails and it will REALLY look dorky. But there are several reissues / modifications of that kit too...and they'll fit the Flintstone body like they were made for each other. regular guy
Okay. '34 rails would be more direct way. Saw some good 'mix and match' frame rail/body combo's. '32 rails with '27 roadster or model A roadster body setting on them. On the T bodies where you can see the floor here's a tip. Use custom carpet out out a parts pack. Get rid of 'ho-hom' floor in a bucket T. Can also paint floor body color in a flat paint to look like carpet.
tim boyd
Further to Bill's comments above, here's proof that the AMT '36 can be built in a fenderless form with relatively few modifications - as shown in this cover story of the February, 2016 issue of the other model car magazine (apologies in advance for linking to "the competition" on this this website, although I personally believe the two mags as far more complimentary to each other than being competitors). http://www.scaleautomag.com/issues/2016/february-2016 While this one was built as a coupe, same steps would apply using the Roadster parts in the same kit....TIM Edited March 3, 2018 by tim boyd
regular guy
Great! That kit is currently available so it would be easy as falling off a log to build one of those. Saw a cool tip. Roadster set up for drags without the radiator but it had the radiator shell only.' Anybody know which of these kits came with a flathead V8? A flathead V8 AND a OHV V8 would be a better buy. The '36 would look good built with full chrome hubcabs and skinny tires with whitewalls. Some custom colors could be honey or maroon with flat white interior. About only color I can think of to go with flat red, light flat blue and dark flat blue interior is white.

I certainly understand Mike's thinking, as your post is all over the board, mentioning a '36 Ford roadster, but not which kit (Monogram had one, too), mentioned the one-piece frame and fenders, then mentioning an aftermarket resin body, and finally jumping into real Ford coupes. It would be very helpful to everyone if you were a bit more clear with what you're trying to discuss, especially when posted in the Reviews sections. Had you posted a reply in the above AMT '36 Ford review topic, that would have probably made things much easier and smoother or all. Maybe a new topic under the Tips section or in Gen Disc. would've been better if this is supposed to be about modifying, kitbashing, or some other form of building/working on the AMT '36 Ford kit? regular guy
Maybe this kind of article isn't for you. Looked at an older issue of AMT '36 Ford and it says includes flathead and a very cool 421 Pontiac engine. If you think happy thoughts that the new AMT includes all the good parts in their reissues now then it should have the two engines. Looking into a 40 cabriolet fenderless hot rod. regular guy
Ace.Kind of Jeckel and Hyde. Last night you were contributing to the post and today you're putting nonsense up. Que sera, sera. The real deal is yours truly ordered 'Make Your Own Hot Rod' book. Should have lots of good info and pictures of these kinds of cars. Book is by Leroi Smith/Tex Smith. Also wrote 'History of Hot Rodding' in two parts and Track Roadster history once again in two parts. Good stuff if you're into Hot rods. regular guy
Okay. Forum post graftiti time is over! Those last two posts have nothing to do with Ford hot rods. Will probably pick up up a '34 Ford body from Jimmy Flintstone. Painting it as far as I'm going to go. Will paint it a 50's custom mix color. Purple or maroon would look good.See what Testor's dark blue enamel looks like. I don't think metal flakes really look 50's. May try a Model Master pearl. Be interesting to see what a resin body is like.

regular guy
That's a valid criticism. Sorry though the 'I hope you can' goes in the grafitti garbage can. It's a review of sorts. About the AMT '36 Ford kit and the '34 Ford resin body. The 40 fenderless hot rod looks like a no-go. i could have sworn I have seen other year Ford's beside T's, A's, 34's and '36 ones. Looks like the current trend is full fendered. A stripped down car will take throwing around a little better than those. These current ones look more like cruisers instead of hot rods or go fast's. I like a rod built for go not show.
Ace-Garageguy
I like apple pie, but I never really developed a taste for cheese on it. I like a pie that focuses on "sweet" rather than a mashup of sweet and cheesy. Cherry pie is nice too. Especially when it's tart and sweet at the same time. I also like cake. Chocolate with fudge frosting. Or a tunnel-of-fudge cake made in a Bundt pan. Edited March 4, 2018 by Ace-Garageguy

I think the 1/24 Monogram '36 Ford would be a better starting point for a fenderless roadster. You'd still have some work to do, but the fenders are separate and there is a full frame, so no need to separate the two. Plus, you like old school hot rods, and this kit hasn't changed a whole lot over time, so it does have that vintage feel to it.
