Lindberg's big Stealth - Mopar from the East (OOB)

While it’s true that I do have a certain affection for “loser cars”, I do have SOME automotive taste. I can appreciate a good piece of automotive technology; a car that encompases style, performance and advanced engineering. Of course, it helps if that car is also something I see, or at least saw, every day; I do still have a thing for the “common” car, even if it’s uncommonly cool.

A perfect example of this is the Dodge Stealth. I remember when they first came out, it was like pretty much nothing I’d seen before, and I really did find them attractive, even with that weird spoiler of theirs, tucked so close to the back window in defiance of convention.

That’s why I was very happy to get my hands on not only a kit of the Stealth, but a BIG kit! I didn’t even know there was a 1/20 scale version of Dodge’s “everyday supercar”, but it turns out Lindberg had me fooled. Good old Lindberg, once again to the fore with the Mopar weirdness!

Check out my out of box review of this kit below, and make some room; it’s not a small beastie!

Great read, thank you very much for that. Dodge and Mitsubishi seem to have had a long relationship. The Dodge D50 pickup from the 70s is a Mitsubishi L200 and not long ago I saw an 80s Mitsubishi Pajero on Bring a trailer that was badged as a Dodge aswell. Now, there is a Dodge Lancer but imagine what it would be if you had gotten the Mitsubishi Lancer evo cars as Dodges. Now that would have really been something:D

Seems to me like the steering wheel or something was closer to 1/24?  I can't remember.  And those tires - OMG how SQUARE could they make them?  the sidewalls are like completely flat and vertical?  These are memories of course.   I think I may have built it when first released and later used the steering wheel for some other project in 1/24.  Seems like.  I may be completely off base on that.  Coincidentally, the Lindberg 1/20 Explorer is one of only a few kits I ever gave up on and threw away.  I can't remember why now.  Seems like it was generally awful.  Something was bad wrong for me to completely give up on.  I dod still have the Toyota and Nissan pickups in my collection of builtups.  Not sure where they are though.

Love the stuff you do Adam.   I always read about the car stuff.  Here and on your blog.  I wish there were more weird things for you to report on.

Thanks, Randy! I'm glad you enjoy it! I still have some weirdness up my sleeve, don't worry. I've got some Japanese goodies, a couple more street vans, and  you never know what else. Some new reissues, some classic stuff, but most of it is downright weird. Oh, I did just come into an engine-less Escort for $5! Can you smell the project car in that? Yeah, baby...

I shudder to think of that explorer. As for the other Big Lindys I have, I cant' say they look bad. Of course, I thought that about the MPC Pinto I just started... oops. Total POS. Going to totally rock though! SO much work needed on it, mind you.

See, Jesse, if someone gave me a 1/20 as a prize, I'd be all "Hot Darn! Look at all the extra plastic for the same price!" Of course, the fact it's weird, and that no one else likes it, makes me like it a lot! :)

LOL! Yeah, they did grown on some of us after all these years! We would often end up giving two of them away to every winner or hand them out to the kids as they left the show. Lindberg was pretty good at sending stuff out back then whenever we asked for donations. But sometimes they would all be the same kit, and in 1/20th! We ended up with a couple of cases of "Baywatch" pick ups and it took forever to get rid of them! Now I wish I would have kept a couple just for the box art! LOL!

That was a great review of a not-so-great kit.  If Adam wasn't such an entertaining writer, I probably would have fallen asleep.

I bought the "Baywatch" pickup very cheap, just for the decals and a few parts that looked like they might work in 1/25.  Like the flotation devices (no, not the ones in that inset photo... )

thanks for the Compliment on the writing, Mike! I do try to keep it entertaining. I'm sorry that the subject matter wasn't more exciting, though. I like the looks of the kit, and it was my first 1/20 Lindy. I just liked seeing all the parts so, well, BIG. :) I will admit that I'm a bit hesitant about the building of it, though, since not too many people have much good to say about it.

Oh, wait... no, that's not it. that just makes me want to build it MORE. I'm the guy who lives for Matchbox, Farpro and MPC, so I'm sure the Lindy can't be that bad!

Can it? :/

I'm glad you put that in there about the flotation devices, because that was the first thing that sprang to mind.

Interesting review on a not so interesting kit. I remember being one of the first go rush out and buy this kit when it came out back then. I went headlong into building it before I found out it HAD NO TURBOS! A Stealth R/T with no turbos is just a Stealth E/S, but then it has AWD which wasn't available on non-turbo cars. I did end up finishing it as a custom convertible, which looked good. I never built another Stealth again. That itch was scratched with this kit and I lost all interest in the Stealth after that.

Apparently, the same thing happened to the real car, because it didn't last too long either.
