1976 gran torino

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just started on this model. Learning from my last build, I'm sourcing as many source images as I can for accuracy over interpretation. I have to say this is one of the best casted model I have come across so far. The chrome doesn't look too bright and shallow, the mold lines follow natural lines and it feels solid.

First the primer. This primer is terrible but I do not have another light primer and as my body color is going to be light I'm stuck with it.

All primed.

Letting the body dry, I now move on to the interior. Here I'm gluing and sanding the seamsMVIMG_20180506_200553.thumb.jpg.147c5b3b3c8aeb237efa0e120265fc2d.jpg

I cannot for the life of me find an image of the back of the front bench seat. I think it could either be vinyl or carpet texture. If anyone knows please let me know. This is the best image I can find, but I'm not sure if it is period. The back appears to be vinyl but it's hard to tell.

Flocking the carpet. I used to use modge podge but after seeing a YouTube video decided that using paint for adhesive is the better option. MVIMG_20180506_200726.thumb.jpg.2687443e23ee944603030ea9f9c4f972.jpg

Here's the dash without the wood grain cluster as well as other details to come. One thing I'm starting to learn is that I need to let things dry and cool my jets else make a sloppy mess.

As a side note q tips with plastic sticks are awesome. The plastic tube comes in handy.

That's where I got so far.

I really like the blue you're using for the interior.  Would you mind telling me the mfr & P/N (ex: Testors #1112)?

I'm using a couple different paints here the blue itself is Tamiya xf-8. I dusted this with a clear acrylic from model master, and pulled the seams with panel liner for more depth.

The blue by itself isn't as dark. MVIMG_20180507_191931.thumb.jpg.2f050c2dd3329886587bd37657bcd415.jpg

I have a 1:1 75 Ranchero GT in the garage with the standard bench seat interior and dash cluster, just like in the kit. The seat back is just a flat board, just that simple. no more, no less.

Bob Ellis is right, the kits gauge cluster is the basic dash without full gauges, just warning lights. The full gauge cluster looks like this,

Is this kit any different from the Starsky and Hutch kit besides the wheels? I like the kit but the box art looks terrible!

Wish it had the full cluster but I get the sense this is a basic model. Still a good looking care imo.

Yeah the box gave me pause but the model itself is one of the best I've come across for a non Japanese model.

I'm not sure if its the same base model as the starsky and hutch.

I started painting the body. My old man had a continental this color. I knew I wanted to this build to have that same color. I had trouble finding the right color, fortunately Vallejo has a mech paint set, and there it was. I'm usually hesitant to use acrylics this light as it's hard to sand dust out without messing it up, but I cleaned the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of my brush to get a clean finish. I hate light paint because the flaws are un-forgiving. Here it is without clear, decals and bare metal. The orange peel should flatten out with the clear...should

Also, this thinner is the best I've come across so far. I've tried Testors, turpentine, googone, turpenoid, mineral spirits and oven cleaner. Nothing has even come close to taking paint down like this stuff. It evaporates fast but cleans like crazyMVIMG_20180507_234226.thumb.jpg.b9dd2f0d309061644294ca2b47735d87.jpg

Also completed the dash to the best of my ability. The decal doesn't fit perfectly which is disappointing, but I figure the steering wheel will hide most of the crimes. I noticed in my research they have plated moldings around the vents. So I'm posed with the dilemma to take the risk of messing up the dash paint by painting it on or leaving it clean and somewhat flat.

Okay so I ran into an interesting detail. There is a CB radio on the sprew but not in the instructions, leading me to believe this is the exact same as the S&H versionMVIMG_20180508_002508.thumb.jpg.eda5bd314dd012dc41e1863e8da067e3.jpg

My aunt had a 76 Torino in that color combination back in 76 with the exception that hers had a vinyl roof. I plan to do my 76 Torino as a Sport. I have to craft an interior for it. Hard to do, but not impossible.

Shown interior with leather seats is a1977 torino-ized T Bird. Same car but different sheetmetal. My '77 TBird had this dash . Had a 400 c i mill too.

To bad they don't make this kit into a four door. Its nothing special,My first car was a 76 Brown 4 door, brown Torino, brown top,a a brown interior. My father got it new when he worked at a former job. Then I got it.Great car.And yes I miss it.Ah but then I quickly got a 69 Dart, but sold that too.The Torino just died one day,but it had almost 200K on it.The tranny wined so bad.But that's Ford..Maybe I'll just build a two door version.I mean I remember that I always wished it was a two door car.Maybe I can do it.
