US ARMY M911 C-HET & M747 trailer Finished !!

Recommended Posts

The biggest difference is the out the door price...the Meng kit is more expensive.  I've seen the HB for around 75, the Meng for around 120. The HB has a one piece cab, meng has multi piece...now don't jump to conclusions it's NOT the turd bucket fright liner kit type multi piece cab . I mocked mine up and the fit is perfect,  nary a seam in sight. Both are curbside w a decent tranny showing. Meng offers the engine for extra, I'm reasonably sure it would fit the HB with tweaking. My biggest gripe so far with mine is the tires fit poorly on rims , the tires look properly inflated, but the rim has just enough " rim lip " to hold them from popping off.

I did notice several parts including the all important hood and cab have a very fine surface texture ...ya can feel w fingernail...not smooth plastic. I know the CARC paint we painted our equipment was very rough..maybe they added that detail ..or buggered up making the mold. Either way it's military and it'll be dirtied up later on.

Sorry for the long post

Update time !!! Its officially a rolling chassis!! The tire issue was resolved by taking time and fitting tire around the rim almost like real one on tire machine.  They'll be removed for paint .20180709_212323.thumb.jpg.9330f0e5bfa97885154e28962e98a464.jpg

This truck uses a twin "tulsa "drag winch to pull equipment onto the trailer, included was fine steel wire for the wire rope.

Next up was the hydraulic tank and plumbing..I'm very impressed with the detail here..the hoses even have coiled look

I favorite part..mock up !!!  Small spots of ca glue holds it together..

Sharp eyed builders will spot the air cleaner riding on the fender and radiator....which means there must be a Detroit nearby...these pics show the excellent detail included.  I literally pulled each part from package and snapped pic..still can't believe it's one piece molding...enjoy !!

Quick mock up of progress 20180713_220019.thumb.jpg.44c98bfeae56e5bfd24e1e1d3fe05684.jpg20180713_220031.thumb.jpg.73e6944f26a52ee6040bbd7d98d5be86.jpg

planning to open the bottom side panel showing off the engine,  still working out how to support the etch grill after removing the panel.most pics of ODS trucks have these sides removed...whether for cooling or easier access.

Jumping ahead...I started the M747 heavy trailer...a few hrs of work and we have this...20180714_113121.thumb.jpg.1bd803bd781d61fc209c57a962baf4fc.jpg

Cool huh !!!!

A few close up shots of the itty bitty details lurking

20180713_233120.thumb.jpg.2024ea762efcd7f4ce8bf27d8351dcb2.jpg20180714_113027.thumb.jpg.dd59f7546e182d3fc2b0d2cf0bd4af9b.jpg20180714_101718.thumb.jpg.38e3215263e8f927f1a98ac064920f7d.jpg20180714_112928.thumb.jpg.c1d9e1bb0dc9b7f26afff7040923a586.jpg

they included the precision hammer on the gooseneck and plumbing lines. I tried to snap a close up of the tie down cleats inside the trailer hopefully they show.i lost a few to carpet monster ...his name is Fred..lucky Meng included spares ...lots of spares lol.

I'm really bummed those knock out spots are so visable now...

The deck will receive a heavily worn finish using the "hairspray " method  leaving a multi layered finish.

More to come !!

That was a one piece mold? Wow that is impressive! This kit has a lot of detail.. makes me itch to get one for myself

Yeah I looked closer it's one piece.  Unless they added the  blower and accessories before boxing up...I dont see any signs of it .

If only we could get this level of detail in a 1/25 kit.  It would probably make it too expensive, though.

Yeah always wish the detail level was higher on 1/25 kits..cost definitely comes into play. This kit is 149.00 add 30 an engine..then usually resin tires to replace the vinyl balloons....and photo etch for the overly think parts... cha ching lol!

What he said!!!

Wow this thing looks Awesome!!

Thanks !! Its certainly an impressive kit..around 800 parts. Course it's a baby compared to the Other Oshkosh tank transport....that's only 1800 parts the immense M1070 HET w M1000 trailer

Psssst........Yeah, you.........I posted a link to LOGSA in a previous reply so anyone can download TM's, TB's and LO's to use as references. Situations like this are why it's always good to have reference material. It does away with guesswork and agita.

Also, if you didn't know about this site, Prime Portal  is the best pictorial reference resource for military equipment on the net. Excellent walkarounds are available for virtually anything that rolls, floats or flies.

I bought two of these 1/35 Real Model Detroit Diesel kits a few years ago. (They come with a new floor and firewall for the M1070 cab for clearance). One for my M1070/M1000 kit and one for my Hobbyboss M911 kit when I get it. You think that Meng Detroit is detailed, look at this! It comes detailed with the hoses and everything molded in! Makes me wonder how they even molded it!?

Very cool Ben !!! Miroslav from Real models makes outstanding products for certain.  I used his 5 ton wrecker conversion for a 800 series wrecker I drove on Ft Hood . The details were fantastic.

At half the price of the Meng engine, it's just as good.

Did you build the engine yet? If you followed the instructions, you and Boris aren't going to like this.

I pointed this out to Miroslav, the owner of Real Model when  it was first released. You always gotta have references handy just in case. ;)

You might want to get RMA 36524

I made the master and it's a100%accurate representation, down to the last bolt.

So, on the parts that are wrong, part 20 goes where part 21 is located and then part 21 goes where part 20 was? And part 20 is reinstalled at a 60 degree angle?

Is that transfer case unique to the M1070 or does the M911 use it as well?

First, apologies to Jeff for posting non-relevant stuff.

Roger. This is how the parts are supposed to be attached:

IMG_3932_b.jpg.79d7f3ea9118a713bd0ebe827d900790.jpg

IMG_3930_c.jpg.b5af9b6b86fd0400f8091b3d618ca4df.jpg

Additionally, an accessory pulley is supposed to be mounted where Part 21 is shown to be attached. It powers a secondary  alternator which I had to scratchbuild, along with the associated brackets. The angle and length of the dipstick tube, as shown in the instructions, is wrong. First, the engine wouldn't fit on the kit frame if the tube was installed as in the instructions. Second, it has to be installed at the angle you see on my engine.

Please excuse the quality of my engine. It's not because I don't know how to build resin kits. I originally bought and photographed this in 2013. Miroslav sent me a real piece of garbage casting. As you can see, in addition to broken or missing parts, the details, when compared to Boris's and yours,  are either extremely soft or not included on mine. What you see isn't a lousy paint job. That's the rough casting surface under a single airbrushed coat of Detroit Diesel Green. To say I was pissed about the substandard quality of this particular engine would be an understatement. Yours, and others I later bought, were made with a new mold.

Stick with the kit-provided floor. The RM part is too thick and not as detailed. If anything, splurge and get the Voyager PE sets for the M1070n and M1000.

The transfer case (Oshkosh 55000 Series) can also be used with the Italeri and Trumpeter series of HEMTT vehicles.

I also made accurate floor armor for the M1070.

If you want a full size template and pics, PM your email address. I'll also send you a copy of the Transfer Case assembly instructions I wrote so you can get an heads up if you decide to get it.

Once again, sorry Jeff. I'll stay on topic. :)

Hey no problem Joe ! Its great to have the right info about kits and aftermarket goodies when we're laying down the cash for them . That's a great looking and very detailed engine even if the finish is what it should be.

Yeah the transfer case also fit the HEMTT series , recalled the similarity.
