disconovaman Posted February 20, 2019 Share Posted February 20, 2019 Pretty much when I got the paint on this 36 Ford I knew it had to be an early 60's inspired Custom. I kept the teardrop headlights but I chopped the top and removed the center out for another point of exit from the car. I wanted to chop the top so low that gettin in from the top would be easy by stepping on the running board. Although I couldn't chop it as low as I had envisioned I do like the overall shape. It's not my best work but overall the subject matter gets the point across. and aside from all that it's not typical of what I build so it gets me out of my norm for a change. I'm enjoying the build. I had some major set backs and it didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped but all and all it's the vision I had anyway. I did some research on the kit and found all kinds of opportunities, one of which is the chopped 3 window top that comes in one of the older issues. So now I have a plan for a fenderless chopped 3 window Hot Rod with a Chevy big block and while I'm at it why not a Big block Ford powered Classic for another 36 Street Rod? And you've still got almost five weeks to drag that '55 Chevy across the finish line! YOU GO BOYEE! Meanwhile, although I've gotten sidetracked with other projects, I HAVE been making significant progress on my '57 Vette gasser. I filed and sanded the top smooth, and then scribed in the front and rear chrome trim, which should visually "lighten" the look of the piece. Snake45 Posted February 23, 2019 Author Share Posted February 23, 2019 I've got a '90s reissue of the '36 Ford somewhere in the Snakepit, but I'm not a huge fan of them. If I ever build it, it will be as a gasser and will live next to a '37 Chevy gasser (also not yet built). So much styrene, so little time. Superbird McMonte Posted February 23, 2019 Share Posted February 23, 2019 (edited) I installed the vents removed from the Chevelle body. They fit perfectly with no modifications! I mocked up the interior one last time for final installation. I took the window cranks and arm rests from the Chevelle too. My non-AC heater box on the firewall. The body, interior, floors and chassis all in place. A BIG thank you John LaQue for sending me the Hurst wheels I was looking for! Very near to the finish line! Me and my little buddy! Top painted--I planned to paint it Tamiya Lime green solid, but OF COURSE I couldn't find that can , so I used Testor metalflake lime green instead. (I don't like it quite as much, but if I ever find the Tamiya can, I can repaint it later.) Drilled and filed out the extended solid rear spring mounts to make 'em look like long shackles--I know, very very wrong, but they now look less silly than they did solid. Time for a quick set-together/attitude check. It's more nose-high than I usually like, but hey, that stance and the metalflake top both say "Mid-'60s," so whatdahell. This car started life as 1969 Olds 442. I purchases 3 68 conversion kits from Modelhaus a few years back. The reason the Chevelle kit is included in the pictures is because I used the floor, chassis and suspension from that kit. I would like to make an air cleaner decal for it. Just curious is all, but did the body not have the scoops on top of the front fenders? Looking at pictures some did some didn't I guess. Great looking build on this gasser Vette. Gramps 46mentioned the front fender scoops and I think it was after the '56 or '57 model year that they did away with the scoops. As for the rear shackles I think that most sanctioning bodies would not allow them. I remember two different approaches that guys used way back when. One would be to drill the shackles half way between the top and bottom and add a small diameter tube or pipe through which and additional bolt could be added giving additional rigidity. This was also used by some Jeep guys before commercial Lift Kits were common . This would keep the rear end from shifting when you turn. The more common way they some of the Gassers were lifted in the rear as to mount the differential under the leaf springs much like a pick up truck. This would give you the lift needed without up setting the rear suspension. Just ideas. The rear quarter window on the 1:1 Corvettes were never used in the original kits and I always wondered why. If it did, I removed them with no tears--I don't care for them. I've seen lift shackles on cars in NHRA competition (back in the day) but of course nothing as tall or silly looking as these (or the ones in the AMT "Old Pro" '72 Nova). But I'll live with 'em on this build, at least for the time being, just to GITTER DONE. I might build up another complete frame later, which wouldn't be this high in the nose.
