What are the best aftermarket sources for vintage sports car accessories?

Recommended Posts

I'm beginning a series of 50's and 60's sports car projects, cars like the various pre-911 air-cooled Porsches (356 A,B, &C; 904; 906;), E-type Jags, Ferraris, Maseratis, front-engine Lotii, etc. I have been slowly building up a stash of kits but one thing I'm ignorant about is sources of detail aftermarket parts like wire mesh headlight stone protectors, leather hold down straps, Lucas and Cibie fog lamps, Raydyot rear view mirrors, vintage correct seats, steering wheels and instruments, Boranni and Dunlop Wheels, correct period tires (i.e. Dunlop, Englebert, Firestone, Goodyear, etc.) I'm a long time hot rod and drag car kit basher and know my way around that world of aftermarket sources pretty well, but the vintage sporty-car arena is new tpo m,e, at least in scale (I do know the 1:1  world pretty well, I think). I do know that Replicas & Miniatures have offered various bits in this area, and Model Builders Warehouse does a good job of aggregating parts from sources like Historic Racing Miniatures and the German supplier Scale Production. Any other suggestions as to where I should be looking?

I've been on the same search myself. Fireball Models has some Cibie lights and he has Minilites in a couple of sizes. Scale Production has some period mirrors, those rubber hood tie downs and other things, but they are based out of Germany so you may have to deal with postage fees and the wait. If there is an American supplier I would love to find them.

Now we are talking.  Sports cars of the 50's and 60's are my main interest.  I can endorse and have used all of the venders above.   A new one I have dealt with is from Japan and is very easy to deal with via email, English is not a problem.  mizorogiscm.shop-pro.jp.  Akira is quick to answer questions, take orders via email, and is a great artist of the things we love.

I am not aware of an English version of the web site but my experience has been that Akira is very quick to respond to questions in English.

I use Google Chrome as my browser and it will automatically translate the page from a prompt in the upper right corner of the page. Very handy!

Interested in what you can build and where to find kits and accessories. Historic Racing Miniatures has some great kits and parts, LeMans Miniatures makes some kits, not as many as they once did. One of the aftermarket kit makes recently lost his home and business, Fisher Models made some very nice looking kits from that era.

One I always wanted to build was the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR roadster of Fangio and Moss at LeMans 1955. All the cars of the 50's and 60's are interesting subjects and all have some stories. I started on my 300 SLR, I poke around at it from time to time. I hope to someday get the motivation to complete the car. I have the HRM trans kit and some wheels plus the Monogram/Revell donor 300 SLR kit. Shame the car had a short racing career, it deserved more.
