Started my paint booth

Thank you, years ago when I painted cars down draft booths were the way to go so it kind of stuck with me, works really well with the filter in the bottom like that I'm getting almost no over spray in the hose just fumes. The fan I ended up getting is a 270 CFM so the fan is 10 foot away from the box and still has good suction, I think I may move it a little closer though I think I want just a little more than I'm getting.

It was cheap the fan was 30 and I had most everything else already but totes are cheap...

I'm using the same 270 cfm bilge fan as you are Brian though I have mounted mine at the back just because it was far easier for me to set things up that way and I can sit at the desk and the booth is at the right height for me.

I'm lining my bin with paper so its quick and easy to keep clean and I bought a bulk roll of filter material off a local supplier which I just cut to shape and change as needed.

I find it all works without any issues and even when using a large spray can all the fumes and paint are completely drawn outside.

Thanks for the info Ron, if yours isn’t to strong right on the back of the booth maybe I just need to move mine there... I like the paper idea too and I’ll have to look for bulk filter like that, if you have any info on it that would be great!!!!

I took a filter i had here from one of those small fold up spray booths every one sells in to a filter specialist and he just matched that sample.

The filter material is  nothing  special and the business  I purchase it off sells it by the square metre then I just mark it out with a sharpie and trim it out with scissors.

Just about everything I spray is Lacquer  and the overspray is dust by the time it gets to the filter so I just run a vacuum cleaner over it after use.

That is designed for water based (acrylic) type paints only and is quite large, although inexpensive.

Do you think that it could be adapted for lacquers by getting a sealed fan motor of sorts?

I think in the long run you would be better off building something smaller. That is 3 feet wide, over 3 feet tall and 2 and half feet deep, much too large for model bodies unless you are building big scale (1/8, 1/12) size vehicles. The plastic totes in the beginning of this thread are more than ample for most bodies and cheap to source, especially if you have a Big Lots nearby. Adapting a fan that is explosion proof to this setup would likely be costly due to the size.

Ah yes, very good points indeed.  Thanks man!
