Is anyone else getting "page not found" messages when trying to reply to a post?

I've tried about a half a dozen times to reply to a topic in the truck section and every time I hit reply, I get an error message "404 Page Not Found". Is anyone else having problems or am I just special!?!?

Check to see if you have any emoticons that may not be playing nice. At times when I do an update on a WIP, particularly with the pics I post, the font color and bold type, I get that 404 error.

I get rid of a few emoticons and then it'll post.

Not sure if this helps, but this is the issue I've run across.

Thanks, but I have tried multiple ways of trying to post the reply I've been trying to reply to and it just keeps giving me the 404 error no matter what.

That problem has been vexing us for a while now. It seems to be related to the size of your posting. I had it happen to me and don’t think it’s related to your posting content.

I just typed a long message to DrKerry and got it and the message was lost........not fun typing with numb fingers this morning....bummer.

I got burned this way using so many computer programs and websites (lost text) that nowadays I use 2 extra key strokes not to ever lose the text I just typed in.

Once you finished composing your message, still in the compose window, hit Control-a, then Control-c.  The first one selects all the text in the compose window, the second copies it into computer's copy/paste buffer.

If something goes wrong and your message is lost, you can just try to reply again and in the empty compose window hit Control- v.  That pastes the text f r o m the buffer into the window.   Keyboard shortcuts are wonderful!  Of course the paste buffer does not persists through reboots and gets wiped out by anything else you "copy".

Just for full disclosure, for you mouse clickers, Control-a is equivalent to right-click->select-all, Control-c is right-click->copy, Control-v is right-click->paste.  But it is much easier to use the keyboard shortcuts when typing.

I suspect that the problem here is not the length of post, but combinations of certain words.

Actually, the above text (in black) has some combination of words that makes the forum puke. If you notice that the word "f r o m" has spaces between letters. Because of that word is typed or copied/pasted without spaces between the letters, the forum will puke when you hit the "Save" button.  But instead of 404 error, there is a dialog box stating "This comment can no longer be edited. It may have been moved or deleted, or too much time may have passed since it was posted for it to be edited." After you hit "OK" the page is hung - you have to reload it.  I duplicated it few times (thus my test posts).

Thanks. I just posted a test topic with the above text, and it posted just fine. That's how this problem has been though. No reproducable failing case. There is some set of hidden circumstances here that are failing. We can pursue this with greater zeal once I get the forum software updated.

Excellent!  I'll be very curious about your findings (and of course happy if and when it gets fixed).  Also, this might be a different problem than the 404 error (but it could be related).

In my experience, most of today's software is written very sloppily. It is probably compiled from many modules written by different programmers who don't even talk to each other, and they probably use bunch of generic libraries or pre-canned code modules (written just as sloppily).  I'm not a programmer, but I know enough to be dangerous.

I've had the "404 Error" occur occasionally in the past; it resurfaced last evening.  I'll try to repost today.

I got it today, searched the web awhile, shut the compute off, rebooted a little later & everything was working again....so far...

Remember those 2 keystrokes (I mentioned in my earlier post) that save your typed up text - I use them al the time: Control-A, Control-C, then Control-V to paste it somewhere save locally on your computer.  It really is a life saver. Worth using.

I had 2 PMs to answer yesterday. I replied to the first. When I tried to send the 2nd one I kept getting the page not found. While I was trying to figure out what I might be able to do I received a response from the person I had PMed 1st. I replied to it, which went through. I then retried the 2nd PM again, which went through. I then posted in two different sections of the forum with no problem.

It's definitely something in the text that's triggering the response.

Do an experiment: Start dividing the suspect text by half each time.  So only post half of the text.  If it posts ok, edit that post and just paste the other half.  Keep editing your post (same post over and over) until you get to the specific area of text which causes the error.  With 5 lines, this shouldn't take long. That is how I figured out what word in the text I was posting messed up the forum.  That way we will have another reproducible test case for the admins.

I was doing something much like that when I got knocked off the forum for about an hour. After 3 consecutive 404 events, the page times out, and will not let me back in for about 60 minutes. It's happened before, and I just now got back on. 

I'm down to three lines. We shall see.

OK, THIS WILL POST:  I've never seen a bench seat in a 356 as in the interior shot of the blue roadster. I need to research that. It probably gets its "outlaw" moniker due to the mild visual departures from stock. A-style hood with B or C-style fenders (I don't remember if that's an actual "thing" from the factory or not), lowered stance, low-profile tires, wide wheels, wider front and rear track, louvered engine lid, center bonnet fuel-fill, etc. Sure is a beauty.

BUT IF I PREFACE IT WITH :  Beautiful selection of cars there.   IT WON'T POST AND TRIGGERS 404.
