List of kit semi-truck engines (how to find)

Recommended Posts

:):):)

For those of you who have "lost" the list of "which engines come in which kits" that FORCE had restructured into a "usable" format, it can be found on the 13th page of this category, have tried to just add a comment to it and bring it back into the active topics, but...….

That was my original thought when I put the lists together...I thought it was good useful information for all truck builders...but the moderators haven't noticed and pinned the topic as I thought they would.
This topic consists of two different topics merged together and further in I listed these truck diesels again and I also did a list of resin truck diesels as well as a list of truck engine colors...as I said...useful information for a truck model builder.
These lists are not exactly up to date right now as some have dissappeared and some have been added since they were put together, but as we can't edit old posts anymore I can't fix it.

But here is the link to my original lists wich are in this topic:

Yes  of course.

Allis Chalmers
Plum Crazy Purple

Caterpillar
1145 - Cat Yellow
1150 - Cat Yellow
1160 - Cat Yellow
1673 - Cat Yellow
1674 - Cat Yellow
1676 - Cat Yellow
1693 - Cat Yellow
3208 - Cat Yellow
3306 - Cat Yellow
3406 - New Cat Yellow
3408 - New Cat Yellow
3412 - New Cat Yellow
C5 - C19 - New Cat Yellow with Black valve covers

I have found out that Caterpillar changed the color from Old Caterpillar Yellow, also known as Hi-Way Yellow, to New Cat Yellow on their machines in June 1979 and that could be the case with the engines too.
So if that's correct the engines would be Cat Hi-Way Yellow from January 1932 until June 1979, after June 1979 New Cat Yellow...except for the cases when the truck manufacturers had their own colors as listed below.
The old Cat Hi-Way Yellow were a brighter shade yellow than the New Cat Yellow wich is more to the mustard shade.

Cummins
H/NH and HS/NHS/NHRS ("Iron Lung") series 672 and 743 cui 50's and early 60's - Cummins Gold close to old Cat yellow
NHC250 - Cummins Beige
NTA370 - Cummins Beige
NTC350 - Cummins Beige
NTC400 - Cummins Beige
NTC475 - Cummins Beige
N14 - Black (cast aluminum valve covers are red and stamped sheet metal valve covers are black)
V-903 - Dark grey or Black
Signature 600/ISX CM570 - Red (may have chrome or black valve covers)
X15-Red

Detroit Diesel
Series 60 - DD Alpine Green or BlueGreen
6-71 - DD Alpine Green
8V71 - DD Alpine Green
12V71 - DD Alpine Green or Silver (usually turbocharged models)
16V71 - DD Alpine Green
8V92 - DD Alpine Green or Silver (usually turbocharged models)

Chevrolet
1940s to late 1950s - Medium grey
Late 1950s to 1963 I-6 engines Chevrolet engine blue, V-8 Chevrolet engine red (orange)

Ford
Ford 331 Flathead truck engine - Dark Spruce Green
OHV 1954 to 1961 - Red
534SD - Ford Blue

GMC
GMC 1940s - Avacado
GMC late 1940s to early 1950s Dark Green
GMC 1950s Crimson Red
GMC 1960s V-6 Alpine Green, V-8 Red
Turbine - Red

International
V-800 - Metallic blue
Maxx Force - Dark Blue and Silver

Mack - Pre 1990 gold, Post 1990 grey, or blue / grey if equipped with an intercooler
ENDT675
ENDT676
ENDT865
4cyl (Mack AC) - medium grey
Super tip turbine - red
The Maxidyne engine colour was gold, the Maxiydyne truck could easily be identified by the gold dog on the hood.
The Thermodyne, Econodyne motors were all painted GREY, these had a chrome dog fitted.
If any other brand of motor was fitted, Cummins,Cat, GM-Detroit, then it would have a chrome dog fitted as well.

Exceptions, some truck manufacturer's use their own colors instead of the engine builders color

AutoCar - White through 1968-69 then manufacturer color

Ford - Black until 1965, Ford Blue until 1982, Ford Corporate Grey

Diamond Reo - Red

International - Red
"International paid Cummins, Detroit and Cat about $25 per engine to have them all painted IH 2150 Red for many years. The practice ended in the '70's, as I remember, and we (International, my employer) pocketed the 25 bucks. Concerning the blue International V-800 in the Paystar, marketing decided that International's new big bore engines should be blue to distinguish them from the competition"

Peterbilt - White through 1984 then engine manufacturer color (there are exceptions as white engines can be found in trucks after 1984 and manufactures colors in trucks before 1984)
Caterpillar was the last engine manufacturer to stop painting them white.

Kenworth - White through 1975 then engine manufacturer color (there are exceptions as white engines can be found in trucks after 1975 and manufacturers colors in trucks before 1975)

Been sick the past several days, so just now getting back to the forum...…    What a pleasant surprise!!!!!   A special T-H-A-N-K-S- to the different ones that helped make this become an easily found tool (like Brian, Jeff, Kerry, Mike, & the moderator that pinned it).   And it goes without saying, a VERY SPECIAL  T-H-A-N-K----Y-O-U needs to go out to Hakan (FORCE) for all the initial efforts (and follow up efforts) that even made this possible.  And, not to forget SAM for remembering to have the engine colors listed added too.   VERY VALUABLE TOOL!!!

Well I had saved all this information in my files for my own use and I thought it would be useful for everybody...so that's my main reason for doing it.
But I can't take credit for everything because I haven't done all the legwork myself, I have found the information here and there on the web (including here on this forum) and I just put it together in a list so it would be easy to use.

Diamond Reo - Red

Haha this is funny, i painted the engine in my Diamond Reo red because i read somewhere that the rebuilt engines were painted red.
So i thought that and old truck like this must have had the engine rebuilt or replaced atleast once in its life.
That + i am a little tired of the beige i have been painting on many engines now.
I did not know about these lists until a few days ago.

But it seems like i have got it right completley by accident:lol:

But you have done a lot of good work by compiling all of it and making one list! It’s a very helpful tool to have! I have both the engine list and color list in my phone and I use it quite often!! So thank you for sharing your list with all of us!!
