Welly historic Porsches

Maybe some one more familiar with diecasts than me can help me understand.  A vendor in China has listed these 1/24 Porsches on eBay but yet they are not in the Welly 2019 catalog nor the USA Welly distributor's list.  For me they are very welcome though.

The 1964 911 (901) is definitely new, the only other one I know of is the Leo Models release.

The 1948 no. 1 roadster looks very much like the Maisto no. 1 but the dash and the base are totally different, poseable steering and wheels etc.

The 959 looks like the BBurago version but it has different body details and wheels.

Now BBurago and Maisto are owned by the same company and operate from the same location in China but Welly is not part of that group though they operate in China too.  Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?

JC,

Yours looks really good and thanks for the 1:1 photo.  I am still baffled why Welly would do this model when Maisto has already done one.  The only differences on the Welly body I can see are what looks like an A above the left rear tail light as well as the different dash and chassis.  See detailed pictures on eBay.

Welly has been doing promos for Porsche in recent years, after a certain amount of time they become available through NEX/Welly and not just Porsche museums & dealerships. US dealers don't seem to get 1/24 stuff, mostly 1/18, 1/43, 1/64th scale. I wish they'd do more modern stuff like the GT2 RS, Cayman GT4, Panamera Sport Turismo, and the new 911's. Recently refinished their 2016 GT3 RS in Rubystone red, doing another soon in yellow w/side stripes. That one took a year or two to go from a promo in a special box to regular distribution.

The 2 Welly Porsches I ordered arrived this afternoon and I am very pleased with them.  The 911 is the 1964 901 model and the 959 is the street version of the 961 racing car.   I will do a review of each of them once the excitement wears off.  :P

They look nice. Where did you get them? Do they come in other colors?

Bob - the GT2 RS in yellow with black is now listed on the bay by both Welly and Maisto using the same graphic.

Interesting! I don't think the one w/the Welly logo is actually a Welly, it looks identical to the Maisto. My Welly GT3 RS models have side glass in the doors and are a lot nicer than any similar-scale Maisto. I really hope there's no collaboration between Maisto and Welly, because if this subject is perhaps just that, it's dumbed-down/cost-reduced and not as nice as the usual Welly standards. If however someone selling on Ebay used the Maisto model as a "place setter" photo for an actual Welly GT2 RS that may be forthcoming, it would be great news! Time will tell, I guess.

I am a fan of Welly diecasts,  with Maisto and Jada down at the bottom.  Modern BBurago is a big improvement over the old Italian produced BBurago but still not at the top of the list.  Hachette/Leo are good but more expensive but generally under $50.   Now I am talking low cost diecasts and not the Mint cars though the original Mint buyers, or their heirs, are liquidating their collections.  Example, I just won a Franklin Mint Ferrari F40 for $19.95!

As I have said before, I do not understand the product planners at Maisto, Jada, and M2 but I guess I am not the target audience (73 year old rivet counter).  The latest M2 #6 Z28 Camaro is a perfect example of my lack of understanding.

Back on my head. ;)

P.S.  I can understand the marketing of the movie oriented cars though.

I bought a Welly 356 today at Rite-Aid, but it's not this one. Looks like it might be a later version. Worth $10, though.

I am glad you were able to find the Welly 356 Snake, a convertible right?

But here I go:  Both the Welly convertible and the BBurago coupe are too big.  I think the BBurago dates back to the BBurago practice of making box scale models and for some unknow reason Welly followed suit with their 356.  The photo below shows the BBurago on the left, a Fujimi 356A in the center and a Welly convertible on the right.  I measured the Fujimi and it matches the published data on the Porsche 356.

In the second photo is again the Fujimi but this time along side a Metro Model of a 356 and they match, the bumpers are deceiving.  Why  oh why can't we get a correct scale 1/24 diecast 356 coupe and convertible?  Even the old 1/25 Revell 356 is closer to 1//24 than the BBurago and Welly versions.

The early 356s (A/earlyB)  had the smaller rounded bonnet:

The later cars (late B/C) was larger, more square:

You will also note the difference in wheel style used.

Early A's and B's (more rounded bonnet) was called the T5. The more squared bonnet (the later B's and C) was called the T6.

Here is my Maisto Porsche #1 with a few enhancements.

Welly have included the wheel covers the early version of the car wore.

The Maisto looks ok but has one major flaw: the rear wheel cutout is totally wrong (looks  radiused in streetrod manner) - apart from that there are some differences compared with the b/w photo of the original car (above, had also a contoured bench seat !):

The Porsche has been restored in the 80's (?) which resulted in different wheels, bucket seats and different front trim and bumpers - this was the version made by Maisto.

In recent years, the Porsche factory bought it back for their own museum and restored it to - almost - original condition (apart from keeping the bucket seats and the modified front trim) - this is the Welly version, they even replicated the original license plates very close (the chromed "A" above the left taillight stands for Austria where the first 300 Porsches were built before the company  moved to Stuttgart/Germany where it still resides today)
