Polishing a two color paint job

Recommended Posts

What is the best sequence to polish a two color paint job  Do I lay down the first color and polish it, then lay down the second and polish it, or do I paint both colors and polish both at the same time?  Will the colors bleed on to each other, If so how do I prevent this?  Thanks in advance

Once paint design and the final colour is laid I like shoot a few coats of clear. Wait until the paint is fully cured. Once the paint is fully cured you can start the colour sanding and or polishing. Top coating with clear helps to avoid burning through the colour coat when wet sanding and or polishing. If I happen to burn through the clear top coat no harm done, I just shoot clear over the effected area.

That's one way to do it (and leave the masking on while you polish the second color). The other is to clear-coat both colors, and polish the clearcoat.

I always shoot both colors, then clear before polishing or sanding. I've never tried doing them separately.

Yeah...reminds me of something that happened on a real car back in the old days when we still used acrylic lacquer for repairs. No clear. A two-tone job, red and white. I pulled the tape off the red (shot last) and started color-sanding with water prior to polishing. Horror of horrors, the red "bled" into the white, even though it had been "dry" for a day, and tinted it a nice pink. Took a while to straighten that one out.
