I like oddballs. Chargers and Corvettes may be nice cars, but when everyone and his mother is building them, I rather start with something different, so when I find oddball kits, I can't resist the urge to buy them. I can't really say anything positive about the Audi 80 though. It is boring and, IMO, ugly. So when I bought this one, I started to wonder "Why? What have I done?".

Until it was like if the lightning struck me. Let's make it into something that could have been seen in the euro tuner scene in the early 90s.

Wheels with a period correct look was found in the AMT Ford Courier. I remember different forms of star shaped wheels was the rage back then (before everyone started running the hideous 3-spokes), and I have always liked them. Though they will not stay in chrome.....

I built this one a few years ago. Was the first one I tried my had at carpeting and seatbelts.

Built it as a stock base model. Found that the ride height was crazy high. Have always wanted to go back and adjust. Might make that a winter project.

i like the tuner idea. :)

I guess speakers are needed to blast eurodisco on full volume to annoy everyone in a radius of 10 km from the car.

Found a suitable steering wheel too, but I had to raid the parts box long before I found this. A stock 80s foam rubber steering wheel is not really very attractive, and a traditional Grant wheel is out of question. Only 90s style wheel I found was a 2 spoke billet wheel, but that one didn't really felt really matching either, it was more of an american thing.

I have some kind of urge to paint it like the infamous Momo Benetton wheel of the era....

Got some graphics decals in the mail today that will be very suitable I think.

I dig this build, as 80'ies Audis are my soft spot. A few years ago I built this kit too, only thing though I converted it to  '85 200 quattro. I cut the whole body from the nose to the tail in half to make it a bit wider and so on. Also 5 syl. turbo engine and 4wd axles are there.

Keep on modelling, tuning version should be fun to watch when finished. I like that Benetton multi colour steering wheel a lot!

Wow! That sounds like an impressive build, do you have any thread for it?

It was built many years ago, and I can't find the thread anymore, but if you allow I put 3 photos here in your thread.

This model is made to look like my 1:1 Audi, that I had for 14 years. Nowadays it has a new owner, and it's been built as a vintage rally car. When I sold it, the odo showed over 450tkm on it, still pulling strong with 185 hp stock under the hood.

I tilted the sunroof since it gives some more life to the model. The bright gold might be a nice colour but it is only a basecoat for the yellow pearl, since it's very transparent I prefer to use a basecoat as similar as possible. Using a colour like this almost feels wasteful though, lol.

Black paint on the pillars, since it will look cool together with tinted windows....

Black taillights is also feeling necessary when we're talking the 90s.

Some people tinted their headlights too, very illegal and kind of stupid, but period at least.... :D I also painted the badge in yellow to tone down the black a bit, feels like something that could have been done back then.

Does anyone remember if mono wiper conversions was a thing back in circa 1993 which is the era I'm aiming for? I remember they were the rage in the late 90s but by then many other modifications on this car was falling out of fashion too, so.....

I think the mono wipers might have been later like you say but they were definetly around at the start of max power magazine (rip), I seem to remember colour coded wipers around this time but that might just have been the air cooled folks with their cal lookers. You do have a bit of the early 90s cal look feel to this which is cool. It wouldn't surprise me to see this look come back into style as 80s body kits are the hot thing in mk2 golf scene now

Yes, I do, and the fact that I did remember it was why I had to buy the 80 when I saw one for sale.... But since you had already gone the stocker route, I took a different one. ;)
And I guess it is just as hideous as you remember the 90s. I know your very warm feelings about tuner cars, eurodisco and Audi.... :D
