Yes, the standard bonnet didn't have the indent in it, the standard bonnet is what is supplied in the kit, the spare wheel would have been put in the back, which was totally inconvenient, you either had to put up with it, leave it behind it you were going to use the rear seats or pay for the dealer to have it mounted on the back door, which was a pain if you were using your Land Rover for towing as the tyre got in the way when coupling up the trailer, the later Defenders have the wheel mounted much higher. The door mirrors supplied in the kit are totally incorrect for a Series land rover, the only way to fit them is to swap the top door hinge with the ones off a later Defender. ISTR the wheel and tyre weighs around 75 lbs... which is why you don’t want it above the cab like the prototype of the Revell kit, which is unusual verging on the unique. Back door mount is common, but needs a frame or it will put a lot of stress on the door hinges. Pickups often have it mounted on the bulkhead behind the front seats, but obviously that eats into rear compartment space. Some military types carry spares high on one or both sides on a frame behind the front doors. Bonnet is one of the lesser of all the potential evils, but it pays to take the spare off before any serious work under the hood... best, M. It looks like it would be very heavy Done it a few times, almost impossible with the tyre still in place, if you weren't going to use it for towing,the spare wheel could be mounted on the rear door, but if you were towing the bottom of the tyre got in the way of the coupling, vans and pick ups had the spare wheel mounted on the rear bulkhead inside, the later Defenders had the spare mounted much higher on the rear door. I have this kit and I am making plans for it now including mounting the spare tire on the hood . The question I have is about the recommendation to paint the frame in Aluminum. I realize that many old Land Rovers have had their frames replaces with ones made from galvanized steel, but it doesn't look like aluminum. What do you think the reason is behind this colour choice? Probably because the one they used to measure and photograph had been restored, using a new galvanised chassis, if you're looking for an original factory finish,paint it gloss black. The spare wheel mounting on the bonnet would have been a dealer fit option on a non deluxe Land Rover, pretty easy to scratch build the pie dish mount, hope these photos help you out.... The Land Rover is still ready for some airbrushing in my hobby room, on the other hand I'm now living 115 miles away in London, I was planning to travel back next week to attend a photography show in Birmingham, that's now been cancelled due to the Corona virus, I'm planning on getting back to the Midlands in a few weeks and get some airbrushing done before returning to London with the painted parts to assemble, we're living in Pimlico,London in a rented flat and I'm unable to do any airbrushing down there. After discussing the Corona virus on Friday, which is getting pretty bad down in London, nearly 120 confirmed cases in the area we we're living in, and only 4 cases back home in Solihull, we decided that we would rent a car and move temporarily back to Solihull today. As I can't safely travel anywhere to do any photographic work, all my work has been put on to the backburner, I'm lucky I've still got a lot of stock photographs licenced with Getty Images and enough in the savings to get by, and luckily my partner can work from home. The good news is that I'm going to have plenty of time on my hands, and plenty of models that need finishing, the land rover will be the first, I'm planning on getting started on it again tomorrow. I have never seen one of these vehicles close up myself so I have to rely on google images . But the spare tire on the bonnet looks better to my eye. Here is what I have so far , other than the pie pan and rubber bumper cushions the tire sits on-once the tire is in place one wouldn't see much of the pie pan or rubber cushions (?) the two red dots are the locating pins on the bottom side of the spare tire/wheel I hope all is well for you and you get back to this project when you can . Managed to get the body and other parts that need painting body colour in primer, I've got all the other parts ready for a coat of primer, which have been sitting in the hobby room for a few months, but I've run out of primer, hopefully I'll get the one's I ordered this morning by the end of the week.
