BRBO 2020 - Kenworth COE Aerodyne

Recommended Posts

Well, I have full intentions of completing this year's BRBO! Of course, I said that in 2019 too. And 2018.

No matter, THIS year I'll get it done!

I'm going with an 80s issue Revell Kenworth COE Aerodyne kit. This was factory wrapped until last week! Everything appears to be intact, no warping or damage to the cab, and even the decals look good. Although I will not be using them.

And I'll be pairing it up with Revell's Car Transporter trailer. This will be one of the reissues, although I do have a couple of factory sealed original issues in the stash. This box was open anyway.

I have the colour scheme planned out, and will be doing a little extra detailing, but not going too crazy.

And here's the trailer!

I hate these boxes. Flimsy cardboard and crushes way too easily. Luckily, no damage at all to the contents when this one arrived. And if you chop an end off, the box for the Meng F350 fits perfectly inside to keep things unsquishable!

Hey look! Another set of decals that will never get used!

Wow Dan That KW brings back some memorys . It was the very kit that got me into big rigs some 40 odd years ago. I won one in a comic competition when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My farther built it for me . But as I was so young I drove the wheels off that puppy !

I have plans to build another one day so if you dont want those decals could I have them please ?

I believe that issue you have there was the only time tinted glass was used

The KW Aerodyne COE is in my top 3 all-time favorite rigs. I saw on a want ad where you mentioned you had this and, as usual, I didn't have anything remotely close to what you were looking for to offer. I'm glad to see you are going to build it and I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

The trailer looks, at least to me, to be quite a challenge unto itself.

Check your PM!

And yes, this one has tinted glass, including the windshield and headlights!

I actually have two of these cabs, and three of the trailers.

In looking at the instructions, the trailer doesn't seem too bad to build. And heck, I built it as a kid, so it can't be too bad! Painting and getting full coverage looks like it might present a challenge or two.

Sat down and official got a start on this thing last night.

"VIT" What is that, Very Important Truck?

Lolz, spoked hubcaps? Yeah, into the parts bin these go.

The Revell kit is definitely NOT an AMT kit!

The parts are much more crisply molded, with far more detail than any AMT kit I've seen, and with the bonus of almost no flash. The hubcaps on the above chrome tree being the only exception I've seen so far.

Only took to step 2 in the instructions before I found a problem!

When assembling the frame, the cross braces need to be installed inside the frame rails. Which is normally no problem. but there are 8 injector pin marks that need to be sanded off, as they prevent the cross pieces from seating against the frame.

Anyway, I've glued pieces together, so it's officially begun!

Okay, although the molds are really crisp, with no flash to speak of, I do have a beef. Are the injector pins really this neccessary? There are a lot of parts with massive circles on the backsides, that prevent parts from fitting together. So far, more than half the parts I've touched have need to have these things removed.

Anyway...

Frame is sanded smooth, and has now been fully assembled.

Front suspension. Here's two of these large pin things, on one tiny suspension piece!

Here's the front frame crossmember piece. Two large pins on a piece that is maybe an inch wide.

Once these all get removed and the pieces are prepped, they go together perfectly, with no ambiguity in the instructions at all. Still better than every AMT kit I've built.
