AMT ‘50 Shoebox Ford NNL East build

Thanks fellas!

Progress on this is REALLY disjointed...I’m trying to keep progressing to make sure it’s done by NNL East but that means doing a little on one thing and then a little on something else and then something else on the third thing then once the first thing is dry going back to that and so on and so forth...good thing I made a decent to-do list that I can refer to ?

This week’s mini-projects included making some little chrome trim rings and gauges for the dash and doing the first of a few light washes on the radio-frequency gauge to bring out the tiny numbers that AMT helpfully put on there:

Then I shot all the pieces that need to be leather-colored a flat tan color...

And then added some shading to make them look a bit more leather-like:

Love the look of that leather color against the body!

More soon, soon as a BUNCH of paint dries and I can work on some more stuff ?

Thanks fellas!

Mini project completed this evening - got the wheels and tires mostly completed.  Shot the wheels with Krylon Wild Honey followed by 3 coats of clear then a black wash.  Then, picked out the lugnuts with Molotow chrome and made some valve stems with wire, a photoetched washer for a base and a little dab of epoxy mixed with black acrylic paint for a cap.

The tires had the sheen knocked off the treads, some little flat-spots added at the bottoms and I tried to line up the center of the  Firestone lettering with the valve stem to make them all look uniform:

Not a super interesting development, but these seemed to take a lot of time...probably because I spent a whole evening trying to make a (almost) perfect set of chrome trim rings from some wire and after 4 hours of getting an (almost) perfect set decided that I liked the wheels better without them ???

I DO think mine (right wheels) look better than the kit ones (left wheels) though ?

More tiny accomplishments soon! ?

Another mini project, whilst we’re waiting for the end of the world to end here...finished up the dash!

Drilled out the switches and knobs (deleting the ones that wouldn’t be any use anyway for this build), and replaced them with ones home made with some wire and epoxy mixed with pearl paint.  Used Gopher Racing gauges with more epoxy over them to simulate glass, surrounded with chrome-looking rings made of wire.  Ditto the radio frequency gauge, which has a couple of polished aluminum knobs for the volume and frequency changers, and the glovebox release is made from a little piece of silver wire and a photoetched ring.

Looks pretty cool in there, I think!

A little more on this today...I’d shot paint on the interior tub already so whilst I’m waiting for a bunch of other parts to dry I figured nows a good time to keep working on that.  First up, flocked the floor (or the parts that you’ll be able to see anyway, leaving the spots where I need to glue later) and then added some chrome trim made from silver wire to the door panels:

Then, I made some door cranks and window winders:

And a quick mock-up for motivational purposes:

More soon, soon as I’ve done more!

And a little more progress on the interior today...this lockdown has got me productive all of a sudden ?.  Made a Moon gas pedal and a little brake pedal, polished out the center console (seems like that was a thing AMT liked to offer on these old kits a lot), installed the phone (what showcar from the 60s would be seen without one?! ?), added the floor mats and spent some time getting everything secured to everything else!

Pretty pleased with how it looks...need to work on the wheel and column next.  More soon!

Fantastic looking interior real nice work!

Thanks buddy!  Wrapped it up this morning - just needed a steering column so I made one to replace the kit part...

...and got that mounted along with the wheel:

All just little steps...but my favorite part is when you can start to see a bunch of little parts come together and look how you hoped they would!

A little more on my Shoebox - still trying to meet the original NNL deadline even though it’s now six months away ??

First up, added body bolts to the floor:

A01906C2-3329-4439-B735-7EA4E60F8964.thumb.jpeg.7ae238874faa9d65a9e8b9e2a26cab1d.jpeg

Then, once those are done I worked on the brass gas tank - I read a thread on The HAMB about how those were a fad in the sixties for about a minute and really liked the idea of having something other than the regular steel or aluminum tank...used a length of this teardrop shape brass rod as my basis and made brass brackets and got it all mounted with a simple line up into an imaginary fuel pump in the trunk somewhere:

4E2979B4-9F29-43AB-99CA-9548C3EBA9F1.thumb.jpeg.af7e719fae6e71780547ff148c92950f.jpeg

Then, next up, started mounting some of the exhaust system because it’ll be easier to get this part in before the axle is in than after - I changed the design I’d come up with originally to a two-into-one system like the original car, using aluminum bar, a Parts Box tip with silver wire hangers with some little o-rings to deaden (pretend) vibration:

812D1348-860C-4B7F-A964-13ADE66CB5C8.thumb.jpeg.a4cbbfc558b81ec14ff3b8177a585b83.jpeg

I didn’t wanna deaden vibration so much that I put a muffler on in - this thing would probably be decently loud out back...for the 15 or 20 miles that gas tank would allow you to run anyway ?‍♂️?.  Good thing we’re going for a showcar vibe here...

Next up, need to figure how I want the rear axle to look and get that installed!  More soon!

A little more work on the ol’ Shoebox, in case anyone’s still following along ?

Got the chassis MOSTLY wrapped up...I say mostly because there’s some more to do once the engine is in and the wheels are on and so on, but it’s near enough for the next step anyway:

Chromed a few little pieces - there’s not a TONNE of chrome on this, but I wanted some little bits and pieces anyway including the center bullet on that grill:

Got the engine wrapped up:

And time for another mock-up to make sure it all still fits a month or two down the line ?:

And a worms-eye view to make sure everything clears ok:

And a normal-eye view to give an idea of the stance:

Looks about how I wanted it!  Low, but feasibly low, I think!

More soon, soon as I’ve done more (I’ve REALLY got to polish that body out, I’ve been putting that off for weeks ?)!

A little more progress today - got the tub attached to the frame and those to the body:

Popped out one of the seats whilst doing it, but no biggie...

Once the body was on I got the glass glued in for good with a little epoxy:

And then got the radiator installed so I could add the lines from the engine.  I added an overflow tube for a little visual interest:

C9A78BCE-D92C-4C28-B121-EB16ADBA5FC4.thumb.jpeg.5528009e25e3dee55c8e67ade6aac963.jpeg

Next up, headlights...

C6C06C8A-43C9-404E-B86A-3436DFA33199.thumb.jpeg.cc4a8f287910627712f514530e5d673c.jpeg

...then tail lights...

...and finally for today a license plate.  I built this for the NNL East Known Survivor theme and wanted it to be something that could have been built maybe early to mid sixties - an actual survivor from that era maybe?  So, the license plate had to reference that:

50D8BD50-F3F4-4F72-B1BF-BDD6DB64B5D5.thumb.jpeg.a271c79de12bfb086100800d18114879.jpeg

I designed the plate in Photoshop and had it printed, and added some little photoetch bolts to ‘secure’ it.

Feel like I got a lot done today, but I did spend 10 hours at the bench, so... ?

More soon!

A couple of little touch ups and details to add but this one’s nearing completion...

Today I BMF’d the supports in the roof to add a little visual interest in case anyone looked at this thing from a low enough angle to actually see that stuff:

Then laid out a design on my vinyl cutter....

...to add a little signwriting to this little base to display it on:

Got one more little project to work on over the weekend and then I can snap some nice finished photos of this thing and call it about done!  More soon!
