What Did You Accomplish Today? (Model Car Work)

Recommended Posts

I cast some engine accessories for my resin engines. This time I made a framework of styrene that becomes part of the lower half of the mold. The result is little tubs that I can pour the resin into. I can fish out any large air bubbles with a toothpick and then put the other half of the mold on. The resin has nowhere to go but into the voids and out the vent holes, taking any remaining air bubbles with it. Virtually perfect casts this time.😁

Wow! I need to figure out casting like that! I could use a mess of master cylinders, coils and under the hood bits!

Well my first attempt  at casting accessories for a Buick engine was a complete failure. Air pockets everywhere.😡 I’ve only recently gotten back into modelling so I don’t have a huge stock of parts kits. And I hate robbing a single part from a kit...thus making it un-buildable.

Agreed!  There are kits I’m building that just don’t have accessories.. like the International Scout has absolutely nothing under the hood! And models like the AMT 57 Ford has no master cylinder!

I’m also constantly making things like sun visors and mirrors too.

A few years back I was at a show where a dealer had gallon zip lock bags stuffed like pillows with odd parts, mostly used, but clearly reusable! He wanted $3 for a bag, I counted 5 bags and bought them all!  So my two 50 drawer units are full of small parts.. I will never want for a fan or valve cover again!

It would be nice if there was a caster just concentrating on those odd bits. I’d certainly stock up!

Yesterday I finished the interior for my MPC 1968 Dodge Coronet hardtop.

The parts have been sent to Ed Fluck Jr. to be reproduced in resin to be offered to the public soon.

If anyone is in need of a bit better detailed interior for their '68 Coronet, they will hopefully be available from Drag City Casting in the near future.

The kit will include interior floor and rear package shelf, 2 piece rear seat, front bucket seats, door panels, 2 piece dash, arm rests and window cranks.

The set is designed to work in conjunction with the Revell 1968 Dodge Charger chassis.

Scratch built (mostly) a new 1/25 scale NP205 transfer case...right hand drop for GM or Dodge. Top case is the 1/24th scale one from the GMC plow truck. Right hand one is from Mobius F-100, that I copied the rear bearing cover and output bearing housing from.

Got the body of this thing heavily wet sanded and the chrome wheel arches scribed today. It had quite a few spots of glue where it shouldn't have been. I still need to do a bit of spot puttying and scribe a rear trunk. I think I'll haul it home for the weekend and mold in a proper windshield frame.

Well, tonight I picked up this old built up from a guy with intentions of stripping it and redoing it. After some encouragement from Tom Geiger, I decided to just scrub it up and leave it as is.

So, after taking it down to the main subassemblies and giving it a good bath here it is. I need to find a driver's side rear wishbone, a passenger side exhaust header, a front tire and one taillight.

Still looks like it's been around the block but it is much cleaner. Enjoy!

That looks nice.  Maybe you could fill it with lead and make it weigh a scale 500 pounds haha.  They were unreal heavy.

A simple clean-up was definitely the right way to go on that one.

I still have the stock rear wishbone from that coupe you sent me if that will work for you.

Mocked up the sunny, seems I can never wait after getting a body painted, have to always see how its looking.

Looks very sharp Luke. It's a great kit that one, I enjoyed building one last year in the same colour as my 1:1 1200 2-door.

Bought another one recently to do a different way, it's the early model like yours.

Wow. So much cool stuff getting done. I love that swiss cheese racer. Good save.

Today, I did the final install on the first door latch. The prototype showed me I needed to position the spring in line with arc of the lever. I also did more to stabilize the lever and made some changes to lower the profile as not need a thicker door panel. Finally, I put some tension on the spring to help push the arm in place. It worked! The door clicked shut on the first try and was held in place until I pushed the release level. The design is a modified version of one detailed by Jarius Watson in MCM scratching building school. I am extremely pleased with the function of the piece.

Updating a really old build with some newer wheels the resin 3spokes started warping and they were getting long in the tooth looks wise, the wheels are BlackboxSTLs Rotiforms pretty much using the entire setup wheels, barrels, and tires. The brakes are my own design sadly with the caliper they dont fit the 19s since they were originally designed for 20" and bigger wheels  so its gonna be kit rotors on this one and the saws go to my 67 impala build
