What Did You Accomplish Today? (Model Car Work)

Recommended Posts

I’m trying a new technique to ‘photoetch’ metal parts, but by using a vinyl resist rather than the ‘photo’ bit of the process.  I can make a vinyl mask pretty easily, and I have the materials and chemicals required here, but it’s still taking some figuring out to get it to work right.

Im trying to make a windshield frame for a 34 truck - which would look like this, loosely:

Vinyl resist applied to some aluminum sheet:

And some chemistry starting to happen:

I over-reduced the etching solution to slow the process down some seeing as this is my first time messing with this, and I think it’s going to take a bunch of experimenting to learn how to do this stuff successfully and repeatably, but I’m hopeful!

My brass version of the same part is starting to etch down to the right shape on the outer edge - not sure how much of that I’ll lose by the time the opening in the center has gone though...

Guess we’ll see what kind of mess we have by morning!

You might save some effort by putting another piece of resist over most of the windshield area, leaving enough of a gap around the edges so the center will drop out.

A number of months ago I received from Casey a couple big old cars. One of which was a glue bomb. I disassembled it tonight and went hmmm...

Here is where the "hmmm..." led me.

That’s exactly what I would’ve wanted to do with that body too - it looks great!

What IS it anyway?

Fighting with my '57 Chevy Gasser,  just keeps battling me......foil, photo etch, getting freakin' glue on paint. I'm about to pull what little hair I have out🤪😂

I know it would be a waste but make it fly..

One thing that I liked on the Tamiya Citroen 2cv was the working suspension, sadly over time the springs go weak, and you end up with a 2cv that's stuck in the weeds, after doing my monthly dusting in the display cabinet, I just couldn't leave it alone any longer, some epoxy resin applied to the suspension arms and glued them in the raised position, now it looks move like a 2cv, it looked really bad as it's displayed next to the Revell version.

Lets please keep this thread on track. We have other threads down in the Off-Topic area that pertain to non-modeling arrivals.

People will be scratching their heads wondering where that body came from.

And you have enough left over for a pickup!

I hope you finish this one. The work so far is spot on and looking promising. Thanks for sharing the process with us.

Thank you Tom,  I just put a little filler on the seams. I am hit and miss with my body work, so hoping for the best.

Some putty and sanding on the boat tail body!  More putty drying on it now, hope to sand and prime tomorrow.

Got this Revell 77 Firebird painted tonight.  Got a few dust specs in it but looks to have a good shine.  Looking to replicate a Trans am my sister had many years ago.IMG_6453r.jpg.174c860fe793e3559d48dd4fb03f3539.jpgIMG_6455r.jpg.b9c983ab62ee37d2552ea149e5676287.jpg

I made a winch for the Jeepster, since the one in the Wrangler kit doesn’t look like any Warn model I could find.

Agreed! ⬆️

That’d look killer with some multi-strand wire wrapped around it

That looks awesome!  I have two projects that will require winch detailing, will use you as inspiration.

I drilled a bunch of holes.

That looks like it was a tedious job

Totally worth it though!  Looks great!

I was trying to think of what I could use. The stores here are on lockdown and only allowed to sell necessities or curbside pickups...so no browsing at Michaels.☹️ I decided to use some small elastic thread I have and call it “synthetic rope” that is all the rage for winches now ( it doesn’t have the potential to kill you if it snaps). After reading your response, it clicked on me that picture hanging wire would work. It has very little “memory” and should be able to wrap around the 1/8” drum. Thanks.

That sounds perfect!  Good thinking!

Finished painting the body.  Some imperfections that I can live with since I am almost out of paint.
