What Did You Accomplish Today? (Model Car Work)

Recommended Posts

I’m trying a new technique to ‘photoetch’ metal parts, but by using a vinyl resist rather than the ‘photo’ bit of the process.  I can make a vinyl mask pretty easily, and I have the materials and chemicals required here, but it’s still taking some figuring out to get it to work right.

Im trying to make a windshield frame for a 34 truck - which would look like this, loosely:

Vinyl resist applied to some aluminum sheet:

And some chemistry starting to happen:

I over-reduced the etching solution to slow the process down some seeing as this is my first time messing with this, and I think it’s going to take a bunch of experimenting to learn how to do this stuff successfully and repeatably, but I’m hopeful!

My brass version of the same part is starting to etch down to the right shape on the outer edge - not sure how much of that I’ll lose by the time the opening in the center has gone though...

Guess we’ll see what kind of mess we have by morning!

One thing that I liked on the Tamiya Citroen 2cv was the working suspension, sadly over time the springs go weak, and you end up with a 2cv that's stuck in the weeds, after doing my monthly dusting in the display cabinet, I just couldn't leave it alone any longer, some epoxy resin applied to the suspension arms and glued them in the raised position, now it looks move like a 2cv, it looked really bad as it's displayed next to the Revell version.

A number of months ago I received from Casey a couple big old cars. One of which was a glue bomb. I disassembled it tonight and went hmmm...

Here is where the "hmmm..." led me.

I hope you finish this one. The work so far is spot on and looking promising. Thanks for sharing the process with us.

Thank you Tom,  I just put a little filler on the seams. I am hit and miss with my body work, so hoping for the best.

I made a winch for the Jeepster, since the one in the Wrangler kit doesn’t look like any Warn model I could find.

That looks awesome!  I have two projects that will require winch detailing, will use you as inspiration.

I drilled a bunch of holes.

Agreed! ⬆️

That’d look killer with some multi-strand wire wrapped around it

I was trying to think of what I could use. The stores here are on lockdown and only allowed to sell necessities or curbside pickups...so no browsing at Michaels.☹️ I decided to use some small elastic thread I have and call it “synthetic rope” that is all the rage for winches now ( it doesn’t have the potential to kill you if it snaps). After reading your response, it clicked on me that picture hanging wire would work. It has very little “memory” and should be able to wrap around the 1/8” drum. Thanks.

That sounds perfect!  Good thinking!
