BRBO Snap 359 4 axle

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, new guy here. I'm entering in to the build off, and plan to create a heavy haul 4 axle pete, with the snap 359 kit. Actually, I'll use 2 of them, lol. Here is my start

And here is a crude rendering of what I plan to build. I was originally planning to build a daycab, and I may still go that route. I'm undecided at the moment

I can't wait to get started, I'll kick it off this weekend once I'm off call from work! I also can't wait to watch everyone else as they build their creations!

6 down caring 2 it’s good to do some math now and then what colors are you going to do? Any stripes? I’ll be following this one.

Colors as pictured, 2 tone black and charcoal gray. No stripes or anything

Well, with the kids at the in-laws, and my wife at work, I got quite a lot done this weekend! Sorry, this is a long, pic-heavy post!

I started with stripping some chrome, and painting wheels and steps. I know about the tire warpage with these kits, but I'm going to try them anyways. If they're terrible, I'll get some from Jamie.

I also worked on the engine, and plumbed it up. The air compressor came out a little dark, but I'll live with it. I used the article from Car Modeller magazine as a guide, I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate. I thought it gave the engine a little something extra anyways.

I got to work on the frame. I started with 2

20200111_115630.thumb.jpg.69210e17a91177f507c4c765fdae67c5.jpg

I cut the first one at the front of the first spring mount

20200111_123544.thumb.jpg.4ff9c08fe93c9a9ea613c735b9a44bd0.jpg

Then I cut a section out of the other frame. I'm not going fully accurate with the lift axle. Just going to use the springs to mount an axle from scratch

20200111_124315.thumb.jpg.8a123b2e7061cd25e62cfb3b2a61d047.jpg

Then I removed the 5th wheel plate from the extra section

20200111_131354.thumb.jpg.a050c783837048a584adb6d2fa8e112f.jpg

Then I attached everything with strips inside the frame for bracing

20200112_112707.thumb.jpg.d8b16581b31bf6016e6eea50950bfb44.jpg

At this point, I decided that I did indeed want to build it as a day cab, so I went ahead and removed the sleeper floor

20200112_121415.thumb.jpg.744a17cd92db32e38acd351a4e0f1e93.jpg

I also needed to lengthen the drive shaft. I didn't get a shot of it finished, but it's long enough now

20200112_093840.thumb.jpg.129f19372241975a69617846d471939a.jpg

Then I got to work on the cab. First I cut the sleeper off

20200112_101154.thumb.jpg.99e80d06356a82d54dc83e909c967358.jpg

Then I made a rear panel

20200112_105554.thumb.jpg.2518230eb394decc0d2c75e2c7ad1144.jpg

Cut out a window

20200112_111000.thumb.jpg.790df8412cd4014e6456dd6d2b47c7a5.jpg

Installed it

20200112_121700.thumb.jpg.0dea5be00ee40b96fa8db0ead25142c0.jpg

A little bit of putty

20200112_141233.thumb.jpg.0abdc464fae75018f8c336333a8c54fb.jpg

Then shot some primer

20200112_154349.thumb.jpg.c1bc1086ff86126797a7a73368b0be83.jpg

It looks like the window and the left side of the cab need some dressing up, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out so far. I added a strip on the inside to support the rear of the cab on the floor

20200112_123323.thumb.jpg.18aa53f9ff1c325c88ca466b3e81579f.jpg

And this is how she sits. I had a lot of fun, and I'm happy with all the work I finished. Thanks for looking!

Looking good. I did a day cab conversion on the sister KW Snap kit. Be sure to do something about the frame where the sleep floor is removed, it gets really week once you cut it off.

It is looking great and you are on your way to a really cool truck.

I plan to add strips there to make up the missing width at the top of the frame. Plus I'll be putting on deck plates which will strengthen things also. Thanks for the advice!

I got a bunch more work done this weekend. First I fixed the engine front cover which had a paint malfunction.

20200118_081633.thumb.jpg.a331971480027228e6cdef78a76d49c6.jpg

I got back to work on the frame. I made some cozad ramps for picking up double drop trailers. First I made the side plates

20200118_064646.thumb.jpg.7ea2543a3626bb2ddceaecadb5377ee8.jpg

Mounted them on the frame

20200118_070334.thumb.jpg.b03844cb0d7ea5ab5ac8fc99e5af07f3.jpg

Then put the ramps on

20200118_082842.thumb.jpg.1b711100d40063db0ed9c066fffdbc13.jpg

And some crossmembers

20200118_114757.thumb.jpg.b6f29201c7fe4658aaf8c0f80c309f62.jpg

The frame is too narrow where the sleeper was molded on, so I added strips to bring it to the correct width, as well as add some strength

20200118_081703.thumb.jpg.063b76e92a172d2ed7e0f2c62e1f3a2e.jpg

I also got the lift axle built. I made it from 3/16 rod

And here's what I wound up doing with the suspension for it. Not perfect, but it will suffice

20200119_135855.thumb.jpg.370fe67db0ace211f789f9c31728fded.jpg

Then I worked on the interior. I cut the bunk off

I made a filler section from sheet, and scribed the pattern on it. And a little bit of detail work

And a couple more bits

20200118_142545.thumb.jpg.8d4c62e4a59cc9bb72abaea28d2623ea.jpg

I made a pogo stick from sprue, and a deck plate from sheet

I had a lot of fun this weekend, and made a lot of progress. Thanks for looking!

I got a little more done this weekend, it's nearing completion. I did the body painting over the last couple of weekends, and it was set up this weekend. I didn't really take many progress pics, I was into it, and just put everything together.

I got the chassis all put together. I was going to use the kit wheels and tires, but they are all crooked. I thought of heating the tires up and straightening them, but I decided to just get the Moebius ones. I'm waiting on those now.

I'm not great at detail painting, so I didn't do a whole lot with the dash. I can't see it now that it's inside the cab anyways

20200125_121720.thumb.jpg.ad180ce526db2718508b27ab27dc894f.jpg

Here's the hood

20200126_120846.thumb.jpg.af2724e59f48731c6721cc265786b62b.jpg

I've built the snap kits in the past, and I found it easier to mount all the pieces onto the cab first, then just pop the cab onto the chassis. The parts get thicker with the paint on them, and it requires a lot of force sometimes to press pieces into place. It's a lot easier (and not as dangerous, as far as breaking stuff) when you can hold the cab in your hands.

Once the wheels come in and I get the chassis rolling, I'll put the body on. I started to work on building a headache rack, but I lost motivation and didn't do too much. I also detailed the muffler heat shields

20200125_121741.thumb.jpg.a964572c1e429e84d74f9280d7729306.jpg

There's not much left to do on this one. Next I'll make a trailer for it. I'm thinking either the AMT lowboy, or I saw that Moebius may be coming out with a 48' spread axle flatbed. I may hold out for that one. I'm also thinking of my next project. I want to build a W900, a 353, and another 359 or 2!
