1968 (Well, 1968ish) Beetle - Ran When Parked

Just wrapped up the Revell '68 Beetle.  What a fun little kit to build!  I'm sure there are concerns about accuracy for those who are true Beetle Aficionados, but for me, it was just a fun little kit.  Besides, it's an old car, it might have parts from Beetles of different years on it!  :)

Might have been a little too aggressive with that low tire there on the driver's back. :)

And a couple of in-progress shots:

New to me techniques (or dumb luck; take your pick!):

  • Based coated the body with Tamiya Red Brown, and various shades made by adding white, black, yellow, etc. to imply rust.
  • Some bits of Tamiya Brown and Black Panel Wash along panel lines
  • Testors Dull Cote
  • More Tamiya Brown and Black Panel Line Wash
  • Hairspray (I picked some gross stuff at the dollar store; which may or may not have been a mistake - boy did it stink!)
  • Various light coats of Tamiya Yellow, lightened with white some
  • Once the Yellow was dry, used an old brush (wet with water) to dab at the yellow in places where I thought rust would be most obvious.
  • Testors Dull Cote
  • Used a variety of oils (cheap, on clearance at the art store) to dab some earthy colors on the body and immediately wiped down with mineral spirits
  • More wash in some areas
  • Testors Dull Cote
  • Touched up the "rust" in places
  • And here we are ...
