1969 White 7400 Hudson Transportation

Recommended Posts

This is a model of the first truck that I ever rode in as a kid with my dad. This was the spare truck and my dad had recently painted it. My dad had driven it to Kentucky where another 7400 had a broken steering box. My dad decided that he could fix the driver's truck faster than the driver could swap trucks. On the way back to Lexington NC, my dad stopped and let me ride to the shop with him. That night for unknown reasons this truck burned to the ground. It was my first ride and the truck's last.

This began with a cab from Spaulding Trading and Shipping. I modified the grill to get it a little closer to the real thing. The chassis began with the AMT K123 kit. I shortened the wheelbase to 142" in scale. The Wheels and tires are from Scenes Unlimited. The engine and transmission is from the AMT 352 Peterbilt. Decals are from Diecast and Decals. Many other parts were taken from the parts box or scratch made. I may add some pictures with the trailer later, but I don't think that this truck ever pulled a trailer after it was painted.

Nice build, i like the look you’ve got with this old rig, nice pics too !???

Thanks! It was built from memory and reference pictures of other 7400s.

That really looks great.  Nice story to go along with the model, too.

Thanks Jim! They never figured out why the truck burned, but I really don't think that they tried very hard. They had a leased fleet of KWs, nobody wanted to drive the 7400s.

Another one out of the park! Well done , lots of little details going on here, love it!

Thanks Tom! One of my favorite and fun details is the mudflaps. Hudson had just bought out Lexington Specialty Foods, that is why my dad repainted the cab, bumper and wheels. He turned the mudflaps around backwards so the old name wouldn't show.

Very well done!  That casting looks very crisp!

Thanks Warren! A few of the dimensions are a little off, but the casting is excellent.

Great build of a rather ugly truck, Brian - very well done (and nice photos, too) !

Thanks! I always thought that they were ugly back in the day after I rode in a cabover KW.

A really impressive conversion/kit bash, and great pictures, too.  Congrats....TIM

Thanks Tim! There are parts from at least six different AMT kits on this one.

Outstanding piece of trucking history brought back to life! I'm sure these rigs were popular with penny pinching fleets.

Thanks! I think the price tag was more attractive than the appearance.

A really flawless and beautiful model with a nice back story.

Did you get the tires from Scenes Unlimited, because the quality looks very good.

Hermann.

You did an excellent job on this one Brian! When these trucks were everywhere, as a kid I wouldn't look twice at them, but if I could only see one now.....

Thanks Jim! I thought this truck was awesome until I was introduced to the Kenworth, then I thought, "have those Whites always been that ugly?"
