I enjoyed reading this so very much! But actually, nobody got it right. It was PMC (Product MIniatures Company) that started the "annual" tradition, at first with dealer promos for the major automakers and then assembled 1/25th ones for toy and hobby stores, kits came later. Annual kits by AMT/SMP, Revell and Jo-Han were not based on only dealer promos at all.

Quite the opposite was true. Their annual kits were often more detailed and had many customized options, including detailed engines. Only some were unassembled promos, most were not. Annual kits dominated the market all doing the 1960's and 1970's and MPC quickly became the leader, over taking AMT due to better detail and better fitting parts in MPC kits. (AMT's CEO started MPC after leaving AMT).

PMC's are not 1/25 or 1/24 scale. And they are not considered by model historians as true "Annual" kits. It's like historians consider Carl Benz's first car in 1886 as the first true automobile. There were road going self powered vehicles before Benz. But, Benz's machine is what set the pattern most others then followed. The same with AMT's styrene kits in 1958. There were contemporary model car kits before AMT. But, AMT set the pattern that most others would follow.

AMT's 1968 Annuals. A strange year for AMT Annuals It needs to be noted, that AMT lost the rights to doing promos for Chevrolet this year. They did offer a '68 Impala SS hardtop kit, a Camaro hardtop and convertible kits, and a Corvette coupe/convertible kit. But, these kits could not be built as "stock" versions of the cars. AMT did not get to see the real Chevys mentioned early enough to tool up a stock versions of the kits. So I do not count them as true annuals. The other two, Chevrolet kits could be built "stock." * But, this problem also crops up with AMT's '68 Firebird. It too could only be built as a custom.

On to the can be built "stock" AMT '68 Annuals. *

AMC AMX 2-door Coupe, kit #2568

Buick Riviera 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #6558

Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #5628 *

Chevrolet Corvair Monza 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #5728

Ford Falcon Futura 2-door Sports Coupe 3-in-1, kit #5128 *

Ford XL 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #6128

Ford Mustang 2+2 GT 2-door Fastback, kit #6168

Ford Thunderbird 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #6228

Ford Torino GT 2-door Fastback 3-in-1, kit #5168

Lincoln Continental 4-door Sedan 3-in-1, kit #6428-200

Mercury Cougar XR-7 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #5328

Oldsmobile Toronado 2-door Hardtop 3-in-1, kit #6938

* Technically AMT's '68 Chevelle and Falcon kits can not be be built stock. They have all the stock parts except the engine intake set ups. And in the case of the Chevelle, exhaust too.

Is the AMT 1968 Ford Torino GT convertible Pace Car kit, #T237, not considered an annual kit?

AMT kit #T237 the '68 Ford Torino Indy Pace Car Convertible did not come out until 1969. After, the '69 Annuals were already out. The same with the '68 Shelby GT 500, kit #T296. Though the Shelby did appear in the '68 calendar year.

Should be pretty obvious as to why the Corvair didn't make it to the shelves. How was AMT supposed to produce a '70 kit of a car which was discontinued after the 1969 MY?

There will not be a lot of AMT for a while, after 1977. Until Ertl decided to phase the MPC name out in the late 1980's. So below is a list of the sporadic AMT "annuals" offered between 1977 and 1989.
