58 Edsel Pacer resto mod

I was inspired by other builds on here to tackle an Edsel, but decided to add a few changes . I mixed the kit engine w the carb, air cleaner , and front cover / belts from the Foose FD 100 Roush engine . The wheels are from the parts box . I also ordered the MCG etch set to enhance the build detail.

The body will be Inca gold w white roof and coves . The engine ended up a goldenrod shade . The separate frame will either be black or burnt metal,  but in want to test the color ...

All the holes were filled w rod or strip,  this will be a modern touch on a classic. 20200509_235029.thumb.jpg.437886e6361bce0a30dcc4d4c2b541c9.jpg

the wheels were from the parts box , not even sure what make they are. I originally planned to use the Foose Daggers all around , but didnt care for the huge rear wheels . The rear axle was just floating in the photo

The finished rear ride height ended up slightly higher than I planned , but it's the stock axle position.  I might add a small lift block before paint .

The powerplant is a mishmash of kit engine and Roush parts , just the kind of power improvements someone may have added . The electric fan is from BN L resins

My buddy suggested the engine color , its sunburst yellow from rustoleum.

while the booth was running , I sprayed the floor pan the future body color to get a feel for how it sprays . 3 light color coats , then 2 coats of wet look clear and  it's done. I cant wait to spray the body now !

I like your body color . I have used it before and have always liked how it looked. Just a thought, not even a suggestion. I did a two tone once and used Model Master #28102 Phoenician Yellow, a Ford color by the way, instead of White. Try it on a spoon just to see if it would even be something you would be interested in. I'm not trying to tell you how to paint your model.

Thanks ! I actually have a can of Phoenician yellow , and will try the spoon test

The body shop was busy today getting the body sanded and back into primer . It reveals more work ahead in a few spots , but glad it showed up  before color ! Sorry for the messy background lol 20200511_110657.thumb.jpg.fb599859271a77a8aa2e9315c13bf9c8.jpg

I used a goldish color embossing powder to replicate the carpet20200511_115247.thumb.jpg.8516bc3b55844212a6451ed47a66104d.jpg

I sprayed the upholstery primer white , and not completely sure what color combo to paint it . I've looked at several photos of Pacer interiors , they seem to use main body color and accent , which would be gold and white ..what's everyone opinion?  I originally thought shades of Tan, but would appreciate a few suggestions . Heres the door panels and dash for reference

The Carpet looks great. What adhesive did you use ? The Inca Gold on the interior "Fabric" might looks a little "Bass Boatish". There are many shades of gold that have little or no metallic in them that might give you the appearance you're after. The body looks nice and smooth and I like that you removed the mirrors from the front fenders. That was kind of a Ford thing in that era and I would think a real pain to adjust them. You would have to get in and out of the car adjusting them or have someone else outside the car doing the adjusting for you.

Sorry I missed this thread till now.  I'll be sure to follow like many others Jeff.  cheers, tim

No problem Tim glad to have ya along

I started paint today, the roof and coves got a coat of diamond dust lacquer,  followed by multiple coats of white lightning.  The silver took a very long time to hide under the white. I wanted both to show thru , hoping to enhance the pearl.

The diamond dust coat laid down beautifully 20200512_172326.thumb.jpg.e27d83b44727596a22a58fcc4150b58c.jpg

the white lightning after 3 medium wet coats, I ended session at 5 , and it looks good and even

the interior colors kept me awake, and finally settled on champagne gold w white accents.

Sorry David ( espo) I didn't reply to your question about the adhesive for carpet. I used a brown paint from tamiya , brushing a small area at a time then dusting the embossing powder on.  I figured if the powder was thin the paint would conceal it

Thanks everyone for their feedback

Whoot whoot is hump day  !!! The bodies in paint and starting the clear process...2 coats right now and a dust nib lands right on the trunk lid lol

Inca gold after 1 coat 20200513_112017.thumb.jpg.b5a9b0208dd32b627fb6f269fd90338b.jpg

pulled the tape off immediately after and sent it back to booth for clear . The color is so amazing flopping between different colors

Body is polished out , and decided to drop it on the frame for a look..20200516_212844.thumb.jpg.67c71e3d47f9eeb9dbaa28734aeb150c.jpg

I'm still learning to polish these bodies out , using novus 2 w t shirt material.  The roof turned out fantastic the body was slightly more wavy after wet sanding ..more practice needed

Nothing wrong with rattle cans in my mind, I use them on more than 50 % of my builds. Usually with good prep work and heating the cans a little I have been happy with the outcome.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the feedback!  Today was foil day..another skill I'm slowly learning,  but enjoying

The roofline has so many different curves , finally broke them down into smaller sections. The wide strip on top of fenders isn't trimmed yet, the molding is very faint and wasnt ready to tackle it free hand yet

Looks gorgeous with the foil added too!

I’ve messed with that particular clear myself but never got such nice results - do you have a particular technique that works well for you?

Not really anything fancy, I sprayed a light coat , wait 10 -15 minutes and spray again repeat as needed. The gloss doesnt appear right away during each coat, it always looks blotchy. I found it levels out as it sits.

The annoying part is once I'm done spraying,  theres awesome gloss...then as it gasses out overnight it dulls slightly being lacquer.  I polish w novus 2 for improving the gloss

That’s really helpful!  Thank you!

And yeah, lacquer is always a kind of bait-n-switch kind of deal for me...I’m like “WOW, shag gloss is PERFECT” then the next day I’m like “huh, that’s not very good at all” ??
