Kurt, I really am enjoying the pics you're sharing.  Seeing your mods done in different materials/colors makes them stand out and shows EXACTLY what  you've done.  You've got a great eye and imagination.   It's sweet looking already.   cheers, tim

Thank you very much for stepping into my shop!  I recognize your icon picture somewhere, oh where was that..... under a pile of medals if I recall. ???

Expert butchery!

?? Thanks!

Due to private reasons, don't have the time to work so much on this project.  Just as well, need to allow time for putty to cure.  At this stage, it's Squadron on the fender modifications.  For the roof, had giant gaps to fill, used epoxy putty (got decades ago, think from Brookstone), a two part product that can be rolled out with the knife handle, using water.  Removed most of the high points using the bench disk sander, then a rasp, then a new sanding stick.  Slathered on Squadron putty.

I grew up with a '61 Mercedes 190 sedan, I'm seeing almost the same profile with this roof, but most cars of that era looked the same.  This was brand new when my dad took the picture, he worked at Zion N.P., I was born a few months later.

Anyway, I'm having to brainstorm on how to accomplish doing the interior now.  Since car was a convertible, easy to stick the seats in after painting.  Now I have to keep the floor separate, and make the body set down *after* the seats etc. are installed.  The pickup bed will also have to be separate, which includes doing the sides, and cutting in the tailgate.  Then I can feel confident about gluing the roof on. ?

Thanks, glad you like it!

SWEEEET!!!! -cant wait for the next stage, Bud!!!!

Great, you're like the kids on a trip, "are we there yet?" ?

Another step done, glued the roof on.  Needed to add a little under the windows, the part under the front windows came from the tail end of the floor, looks uneven with the same color grey, but it's true.

Just screwing around with the wheels.  ?  I'm glad the roof is a little larger than my drawing, looks proportional to the whole vehicle.  Some relocating of door lines are required for the back door.

Next step is making the diamond plate for the bed, then the tailgate.  I'm debating whether to have some sort of roll bar like the G63.  I'm also looking at winches for the front bumper.

LOVIN IT, Bud!!!!....i think Fireball makes some Extremely nice resin winches...

Ohhh! ?  I missed those last time I ordered, the LED light bars and jack.  DUH!

Worked on the back end, the frame extension and and bumper.

Panzerfied the Celica part, diamond plate on top, extended the sides.

Diamond plate floor and sides.  I scribed the back of the diamond plate at the bend locations, reinforced with superglue/baking soda.  Cut out the tailgate.  Reinforced the back of the body with brass rod before cutting.

I've had the jerrycan for decades in the parts box, it will need work on the handles.  Now it's sleep-on-it engineering time, for spare mounts, tailgate hinge, maybe some sort of step.

Sure do!  I still have Plastistruct left over, never liked it.

Fabulous work!

It does look like a vehicle that Mercedes would have tooled up in the late Thirties or early Forties.

Thank you.  Appreciate that you think so.  I'm trying not to go all modern, something that would look dated to a decade of trendy street rodding.  I've always like WW2 German military to begin with, so that's sort of the theme (wait until the front bumper is done).  There were pickups, but MB didn't built anything like what we Americans know, there are 4 door Utes that started out in Australia (correct me if I'm wrong) and the Middle East.  Now that I've looked at it so much, seems normal to me! ?

Made the tailgate hinge, out of my favorite product, 100 year old fusee pocket watch chain.  There is enough curve to require more than pins (like the '69 Chevy pickup).  The jamb has Milliput in the gap.  Diamond plate added to the tailgate.  A little fine tuning this week was continuing the character line, including the tailgate (not seen here).

Started on the spare tire mounts.  What was cut out of the fenders, was sanded straight, some plastic glued to the ends, to make a straight mating surface.  The tube mounts are getting modified, first cut was just about perfect.  Nice when things go together as well.

Good progress!

Is that a PE chain for the tailgate?

David G.

Slow progress..... that was made long before photo-etch technology. Check this topic out.

Shaping up nicely!

Thanks!

Got the other spare mount done.  Started on the front suspension, with a cardboard mock up.

Looking BRILLIANT, Bud!!!.....i love making stencils as well as using canopy glue.

Thanks man!

Seat Of The Pants Engineering has started, the transfer case is done.  Raided the parts box one more time, saw the Bugatti Royal* differential and Panzer IV sprocket.  Hot-wire cut apart those parts and made closer to the size that fits.  Another part (white) added, lots of sanding and filing mating surfaces, then a frame mount, and I think this is good enough.  *Long dead WIP, last one I should finish.

Early 20th Century engineering- not too far removed from Steampunk, I love it!

David G.

Thanks!  Sort of is, won't be a rusty Rat Rod, but will have some modern details.

Such as a killer winch from Fireball Modelworks.

What ever became of this build?

I know right?  I shouldn't complain, but work has been more nuts than ever for me this year, which has sucked all the creative energy out of me.  It's one of 4 WIP that are collecting dust.  I started a super simple curbside just to say I finished a model this year, Tamiya - Honda Ballade Sports Mugen CR-X Pro.
