Tamiya Super Clod Buster Black Edition

Recommended Posts

To start with, I’ve wanted a Clod Buster for decades now, ever since I saw my first one in ‘87, and had the chance to buy the current Super Clod Buster Black Edition a couple weeks back and started building it on Memorial Day, only mid to start with will be the full ball bearing kit, since bushings suck, plastic ones in particular?

My little “workstation”, at the recliner.

Aaaand on to the build!

Here’s where I started, which is in the middle of the instructions, supposedly there is  conversion to swap those nuts and screws out for 6/32 hardware, I’ll just buy the screws and a tap Myself.....

And on through the rest of the build...:

At this point, I was done for the night, axles completed and ready for install.

Next night, I prepped the chassis for then mounted the axles.

I then mounted the wheels and tires and fit the ABS plastic shell to see how it looked.

also figured a couple other R/Cs to give a sense of scale might not hurt, the Clod and black Javelin bodied 4-Tec 2.0 Are “1/10 scale” while the little green Scout-looking rig is supposed to be 1/24, but scales out to be more Like it’s 1/20 like the Lindburg truck kits were.

Started the body prep tonight, should be ready for primer, then hopefully paint, this weekend!

Did a bit more beyond this too, just never took the pics tonight. Got everything for the paint but the clear and I’m planning on using spray bed liner In the bed too, so I’m not as worried about those sink marks in the rollbar stand offs.

I finished building mine about a month ago.  I didnt get the Black Edition, i just got the normal Super Clodbuster edition.  I did alot to mine...bedcover, tilt front end, working V8 motor, lifted it up.....it looks pretty good.  Those trucks are open to all sorts of modifications.  Yours is looking great so far, cant wait to see it done.  I can show ya pics, but i didnt want to hijack your thread.

Go right ahead, never hurts to have some inspiration ?  Oh, Where did you find the engine?

I’m not going as crazy with this one just yet, I may look into T-Maxx Big Bore shocks, a light kit, 4Wheel Steering using either the CPE or JConcepts axle mount kits for servos, maybe a 3D printed grill too, eventually since I’m not a fan of the Super Clodbuster 4x4x4 grill. Already have the primer, paint, and clear, just need to fix the lifted primer that happed a few months ago and reshoot the primer to see if that fixes it.  Got a Lunchbox that needs some more bodywork then paint, lighting, a Rx, and an “axle wrap” control piece from AMPro on Shapeways (also Got the 3D lenses from him) .

Looks great! I looked at the original kit way back in the day, but could only afford the BlackFoot F150 (2 wheel drive only)..........................................

Thanks, I’ve wanted one of these for a long time and finally bought this one earlier this year, believe it or not, both the regular and Black Editions are now under $300 (and on back order right now) on Horizon Hobby’s site AND now has an Electronic Speed Control in the box!

I like the classic look of the Clodbuster, so i modified mine to keep the somewhat original look.  Here is mine i finished.  I hope this will give ya some inspiration.  Here is what is done.....bedcover, lift kit, scratch built lower shock mounts, tilt front end (stock body mounts moved to windshield cowl), working V8, scratch built headers, scratch built firewall, aluminum shocks, scratch built upper links (gets rid of the pieces below the original trailing arms). I also modified the graphics and cut out the "wolverine-ish" looking cartoon guy. And here is the link to the V8 motor...................  https://www.darkdragonwing.com/products/1-10-rc-ohv-v8-h/

Here is the grille.  It is the stock Clodbuster grille.  I sanded off the 4x4x4...used my dremel tool to grind away between the bars....then smoothed out the bars and rechromed them with a chrome pen.  Maybe not the best job, but alot better looking than having 4x4x4 on there.

Picking back up in this now too! Both the Clod and Lunchbox need paint and never even got the Lb into primer, just did some minor bodywork to fill in the antenna holes on both and sink marks on the van’s hood.  Problem is, I boogered up the right rear corner in opening it for the AMPro 3D printed taillights.  What I’m going to do here is redo the mods on the kit body in a replacement Black Edition body, plus cut up the kit body to fill the roof vent hole on the new van body AND the sunroof in the Clod body!

Ok, couple pics from tonight, got the tail lights cut out and the openings filed so that the printed ones will fit, the holes for the side marker lights have been drilled and have the molded on lights cleaned off, I then scuffed the whole body too!  Just need to try and install the panel I cut from the kit body to fill in the hole in the roof and the antenna hole. I also fine that there is a slight curve to the upper panels that make using those to fill the Clod’s sunroof hole, not worth while.

I’ll finish fitting it later, but I have the patch panel cut out the old body and the hole in the new body opened up a bit larger than it was, just need to sand the two to match and cement them together!  Found I still have some Plastruct Plastic Weld that will get used for that purpose, same when I go to fill the antenna hole too.

Filled in the roof vent and antenna holes, have them held in place with Plastic Weld for now be will put in some Bob Smith Foam Safe CA in the gaps for added bonding.  Once that is good and solid, I’ll probably do some filling with Bondic then do the final filler with some 2 part “icing” type automotive filler.

Ok, brought the body inside, looks like there will be some minor tweaking needed with the roof insert and then need to wet sand the areas that still had imperfections from where I cleaned up the mold lines, plus they show where I had to mod this body for the AMPro Lenses too.

Those are a couple of fantastic RC vehicles. Looks like a lot of fun there.

What scale is the Clodbuster?

I have a couple of old Traxxas Nitro Rustlers that I should rehab and fire up.

David G.

Thanks David!

The Clod is 1/10 while the Lunchbox is 1/12 and both have been around, off and on, since the late 80’s.
