A little more of the boring type of progress on this the last couple of days - getting some clean-up done, including fixing all the usual stuff you need to fix on these frames:

Looks a mess with all that Bondo ?. Got the devil horns fitted to the rear inner fenders pretty nicely after some fettling (they’re actually better than they look in this pic, but I didn’t have enough hands to hold them in place AND take the picture)

I spent some time thinking about engine options and most what I have here is too traditional for this build...then it occurred to me I’ve never actually built one of the kit SBFs and that would probably be a good choice.  Not original, and I kinda wish I had something more exciting - but it’ll work great, the optional fuel injection setup is cool and I have at least ten of them looking for a home ??

Im trying to get all the mock-up and fab done in one go for this one, especially where I’ve changed a decent amount of this thing, so next job was the interior tub which I needed to section down (after left, before right):

That shorter seat is from the Revell 29 and looks a little less Grandpa’s Armchair than the kit one so I think I’ll go with that...

And finally, another quick mock-up for my own motivational purposes...more soon!

Got distracted by another build, and had a busy week - but got the next piece of the puzzle made today.  I wanted a flat firewall without a recess, but something that didn’t look like it was just a flat sheet of styrene stuck on there so I made something slightly more interesting, but not TOO interesting...there’s a fine line between making something look clean and nice and making it look like a jelly bean.  Sometimes I feel like I need to put some lumps and bumps back in! ? 

I got the idea for the little dip in the center from an old Buick that has side trim like that - there’s a lot of places on a Deuce where you see teardrop shapes and points and peaks shaped like this so I thought it would be cool to continue that theme onto the firewall in a way I haven’t seen before

Next job is making some brake disks I think - more soon!

I went hunting for brakes today - turns out the ones that come in the Foose F100 I stole the wheels from will work perfectly...thought I was gonna have to fight it or make some from scratch but seems like we’re all good! ?

Next job was some interior door panels - nothing super fancy because they’re hard to see with this sectioned body, but I’ll add some detail and nice handles once they’re painted:

Whilst I had the cutter running I wanted to do something with the inner trunk lid, so I made some pieces somewhat similar to a stock 32’s inner support:

And all the pieces glued and in place:

Not that it’s super visible with the trunk open anyway, but it’s something to notice anyway - more soon!

Hi!

Looking at your coupe, I think one thing you could try to get even closer to the feel of the Boydster would be to fabricate hood sides that would bridge the whole distance between the rear of the grille shell and the front cut line of the suicide door. The flow of the whole thing would be "un-interrupted" as Mr. Coddington aptly pointed to onlookers. One of his "trick of the trade"... It would require you shave some thickness of the side wall of the firewall. 

But I'm not minding my business here, am I not?

Just my little Silhouette Portrait cutter - could’ve probably just used regular tools like a normal person but the machine was sitting there doing nothing ?

I have been contemplating some hood sides, yes!  I think where I’ve left the frame and wheelbase standard length it’ll never look as flowing and elegant as a Boydster - more squat and stocky and aggressive!  Which I don’t mind - but I’d really like to do a proper replica of a Boydster at some point, once I’ve worked through the Boyd kits that exist already.  Even the bad ones (looking at you, AMT 32 Ford) ?

No major progress to report today, but did a bunch of cleanup and prepping some of the bigger parts so I could shoot some primer and then really go over the body and fenders with a fine toothed comb and see what more work it needs to get ready for paint - more soon!

Sorry to be late on your current WIP, but I have to say that so far everything looks great and well crafted Jim!  You're truly a good builder and you have good taste my friend!  I really like the work you have done on the pneumatic suspension, it's a very good idea and it is simply perfect for this build!  Great fabrication sir!!!

Sanding day today - the body was pretty straight but the frame needed a little more to be perfect and there were a few little touch ups to handle:

Back in primer tomorrow for another try - shouldn’t be far off being ready for color.

Speaking of color, had a few little parts that WERE ready for color - loved getting a chance at spraying some of that Boyd red!  LOVE it!

Not an interesting update, I know - but was excited to see how that color looked on some parts!  More soon!

Been prepping and painting parts for this thing ALL WEEK - still not done, but getting closer:

 

This Testors acrylic DOES lay down pretty shiny and glosses up nice but the finish isn’t quite to the standard I want.  I’m wondering how to handle polishing it out...

I tested polishing an extra painted piece with some Novus 2 and a soft cloth and it buffed right through the paint and ruined REALLY easily even after a week’s drying time...so I either need to leave this stuff a LOT longer than a week because it was still too soft or do my old standby of clear coating everything and polishing the clear instead.  

Not super familiar with these Testors acrylics but this particular bottle I’m using didn’t seem to set up hard enough to stand up to much polishing at all - more experimentation needed before I ruin the bits I’ve painted already ?. More soon!

Maybe I missed something but I'm curious what actual paint you're using.  Testors/Model Masters did offer a Boyds Red at one time, but it was an enamel.  To the best of my knowledge, they never offered it as an acrylic.  Got a close-up of the bottle with a P/N or other identifier?

That said, the work going into this is outstanding.

The color is fantastic Jim, I also thought it was an enamel so if it's the case, it might take at least 1 month of drying time before any kind of polish based on my previous experiences.

Fair enough, I stand corrected.  I thought they retired the Boyd line years ago, and it admittedly surprises me that they'd bring them back out as acrylics.  That's good news to me 'cuz I liked a lot of the colors in that line.

Here's the weird part:  I can't seem to find any reference to these Boyd's acrylic paints even on the Testors site, but I've already been shown to have been wrong once.

I believe Jim got his hands on some new old stock. 

I remember the line of Testors Colors by Boyd in spray cans, bottles being available in enamel. Not all hobby shops carried the bottles, but the sprays were easy enough to find (while they lasted). I am not too surprised some were offered in acrylics- there was a shift away from VOCs for a while, with manufacturers investing in acrylic lines in trying to roll with those punches. I never saw the Boyd acrylics for sale locally, not even in the best stocked hobby shops here. I too liked a number of the Boyd colors.

Yes sir, that’s right.  I posted on here about this particular color a while back and someone sent me the contact details of a store in Indiana who has a HUGE stock of these old colors, and was willing to mail some to me.  I don’t mind that they’re acrylics rather than enamels, but I’ve gotta figure out the best way to handle them to get the finish I’m after here.

Seeing as I’m replying anyway - just shot color on the body, finally!  Was looking forward to seeing it in color!
