Revell 1/25 289 Cobra--1st look, (I think)

So the Sunny one says 427, the Academy Minicraft says 289...what actually is the engine?  a 289? a 427?  Both?  Neither?  :)

The same engine is in both kits, the AMT "289" on the right with the Tri-Y style headers and the Sunny "427" on the left.  I don't use either engine in my Cobra builds.

Maybe they think a 351W bored out to a 427 counts.  ?

Wasn't offensive. Not "upset." Just pointing it out for those who might be interested.

As Sgt. Hulka said....

Cool. Never can tell anymore around here. Funny movie, haven't seen in years. Model on "Sgt." ?

Since the upcoming Revell kit is definitely not a reissue of the Monogram 427, how was it determined that this indeed will be the old Sunny/Academy tooling?  A guess?

I would bet on JC and Gramps over anyone at Revell in their assessment that this is the same kit that decades ago included a wider body and a few other parts and has been reissued sometimes claimed to be a 427 Cobra.  Here are the Revell website pictures which show it’s not a 427 chassis or engine.  Fool me once shame on you - fool me twice shame on me.

Rob, there are only a few "427" out there. Why R-G wouldn't rebox their own, really nice 427 makes no sense. So, that leaves 2, the Fujimi, which seems unlikely cross-market. Leaving the Sunny.

Rex, agree, Gary and JC know.

Doesn’t make sense in 2020 for Revell to use another company’s 35 yr old tooling, but stranger things have happened.

Maybe a tie in to the Netflix show.  ?   The Copyright date of the Sunny kit was 1985 according to Scalemates.com

The new Revell release is definitely the old Sunny kit.  It is 1/25 scale in lieu of Revell's other 427 kit which is 1/24.  I like the 1/25 scale kit as it fits in nicely with my AMT 1/25 scale 260/289 builds.

Veering off course a little bit here are two diecasts and the Monogram 427.  The red 289 is made by Shelby collectibles.  The Reid 427 is the Revell 427 die cast which is getting some SnakeFu detailing.  The blue one is of course the Monogram 427 kit.  I plan to steal a few extra parts from a Monogram/Revell 427 to add to the Revell die cast.   It’s interesting the 427 does not have side pipes or any exhaust system unlike the Monogram kit but the real street 427’s had the standard dual exhaust which you almost never see on a replica because everyone associates the 427 with the S/C side pipes.  Since I have no desire to cut up the metal 427 body I may try to add some exhaust pipes or just say the heck with it - it’s just a diecast model with hollow tires and oversized door hinges.B08A4F65-BF22-4EEA-85F2-01003BB993B7.thumb.jpeg.d6bc341971bdcc0611460fdfd2ef5bb4.jpeg

  • 3 weeks later...

Looking at the parts tree, I see the ol' AMT Shelby Cobra 289 kit (from 1963) with modifications.

I know because I'm building the AMT Cobra kit right now.

I have no problem with another version of this kit (just don't call a 289 a 427 ?).

Wix did a diecast of the super snake I think. They did awesome 427 s/c.
if it wasn’t them it was Franklin Mint Franklin Mint 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake Limited Edition  Sry.
One very cheap on bay now.

I reviewed the WIX Cobra's back in the day in my then standing column in Toy Cars and Models Magazine and the FM Super Snake Cobra was in my column in The Car Room Magazine years later.

The WIX Cobras were actually done by a small company out of North Carolina called ICONS Inc.  They were very good especially for $40 retail in select WIX auto parts stores (as opposed to the $130 retail for FM's version).

The target was actually the #98 Cobra that George Bojacuik did when he was at Franklin Mint.  The #11 Cobra below in the triple Cobra pic was supposed to be done as the Elvis Cobra from the Movie "Spin Out"  but FM already had the rights to it (FM Release a poor copy of it years later that included the bogus "Elvis" signature that was tampo'd on the body.  YEECH!)...

As for the Franklin Mint Cobra "Super Snake" (that was what FM called it which was wrong), it was better that a lot of the more recent diecast that FM did, but nowhere near close to the one that G'Bo did...

Don’t look for this decal sheet inside the kit.  ?  These arrived from Japan today.  ?

It's a beaut!

What did that one set you back ($)?

(Here's the AMT 'Grand Prix d'Amerique Cobra Racing Team' kit decals to compare:)

The decal sheet was in Yen and I ordered some other resin parts from the website.  I guess the sheet alone was around $25 but I used paypal so I’m not sure of the exact breakdown with shipping.  In another thread I mentioned I bought the AMT decal sheet directly from Round2 for $10 this summer using their parts replacements service.

Www.mizorogiscm.shop-pro.JP is the site for the Rocketeer decal sheet.
