51 Anglia street rod

Hi guys, finally a small update on the Anglia. I don’t get much desk time in the summer, but fall is coming...

Bodywork is complete, I will paint the inside of the body with interior colour, then begin final base and colour coats. The motor is almost complete, had some issues with pulleys and belts, but finally got that sorted. Not perfect, but believable, made the blower belt from masking tape. Will finish ignition wires this week I think... Interior door panels are done, including the power switches. My thoughts with this build has been a combination of retro and modern. In hindsight, I probably should have done modern interior door panels, however I am content with what I have. The rear 4 link is assembled also. I should get more desk time in the coming weeks, also have most of the “heavy lifting” done, so hoping it will start coming together a bit quicker.9E7074F7-8CCF-4A4D-8207-F6747C5E4435.thumb.jpeg.45802d09f6ae5776c2a413b9f079d34a.jpeg

Hi guys, well, slowly moving ahead, but with the weather turning should start getting more desk time. Suspension is close to complete, and I now have a rolling chassis. Wheels and tires not glued on yet, but they are complete, just need to glue on the rear disk brakes. Engine is now complete and JUST fits in the narrow front. I am using the kit radiator with the addition of an electric fan. Mostly just assembly now and final paint on body of course. Hoping to get some colour on the body by end of next weekend... I’m still wrestling with my two options for flocking, I will make that decision in the next day or two and then I can assemble the interior. The mesh will be used for the front grill, and MCG seat belt material. I made some very basic, (probably not totally accurate) seat belt retraction devices. Everything in the photos is just being test fit prior to glue, looks like everything is going to fit! Yay! Oh... the flat spot on top of the front tires... I missed my ride height by about half a millimeter, oops. I had to keep it low, so that required sanding Tires to fit. The good news is it won’t be seen after final assembly. Well, I guess you have all seen it now... shhhhh, don’t tell.

as always, thanks for looking, comments welcome.

Cheers, Steve

That's looking real good Steve!  Everything is so clean and very well crafted so far, I love to see the motor squeezed in the engine bay... looks mean and powerful.  Can't wait to see some color on the body!

Thanks Francis! Small amount of progress, but it’s moving along now. When I get the body painted, that will give me motivation to get it finished for sure. Thanks for checking in. In the mean time, if you want a laugh, check out the Prius I built for my daughter in the under glass section.
Cheers, Steve

Hey, any progress is progress no matter the amount... I just checked the Prius thread and it's a very cool build my friend, I took the time to leave my comments there too.  I really love what you do Steeve!

I wouldn’t feel bad...if the body had been scale thickness there, it wouldn’t have rubbed ?‍♂️?

Looking great!!!

Thanks Jim! Your support, and sense of humour much appreciated. The shrug emoji is exactly what I did when I realized my error...like how could that happen!?

That’s a sweet build Steve! Been following your thread with interest as it offers a distinct alternative to the typical gasser look. Looking forward to seeing colour on this Anglia... Cheers Misha

Thank you Misha, and thanks for following along. Still going to try for some colour by end of next weekend. Fingers crossed...

I get it!  I’ve been there!

I’m kinda joking but kinda not...if you’re trying to match the stance of a 1:1 with similar size wheels and tires, just in scale, you may well run into difficulties if the body is a scale inch and a half thick around the arches and above the tops of the tires...they obviously can’t make styrene a scale metal thickness so sometimes a little ‘cheat’ is necessary

Hi all,

Well, finally some real progress! Chassis is almost complete, needs some details and a bit of touch up, but it’s close. Interior is also close, some of it will be assembled with the body. I had two different colours of embossing powder to use for the carpet, one was a bit too bronze, the other a bit too gold, what to do? I decided to mist the interior colour on the embossing powder first, before applying. I have done it in reverse before, applied it then painted it, but I find  it loses a bit of its texture that way. Overall, I am quite pleased with how things are looking.
And... finally, some colour on the body. I did a final test fit with everything glued, and body in the base gold colour. Everything seems to fit! Just got a couple of thin coats of the red on it, getting excited to see this finished.
As always, comments welcome, thanks for looking.

Cheers, Steve

As if building a stock Revell Anglia isn't tricky enough, you chop the living daylights out of it, jam ten pounds of potatos in a five pound bag and get it together with surgical precision! This is credit to your skill, Steve, will become one of the most memorable Anglia builds ever!

Cheers

Alan

How to recreate a classic and make it even better?  Simply follow this thread photo by photo, it's the recipe for success!  Tasteful build my friend, I love that candy red!!!

Francis, you are way to kind. Hopefully no surprises during final assembly! It looks like it will come together as I had hoped.
I couldn’t resist putting the body back on after painting it red. Still needs a sand, another colour coat then clear and polish, but I think the red really pops.

Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve!

Great concept, top notch execution, bravo!

Is it me, or are those rear fenders from Lindberg's ( or Testor's) Smoothster 38 rod? The molded taillights looks suspiciously similiar...

Hi Claude,

The rear fenders are from the Lindberg ‘37 Ford, which I believe are identical to the ‘38 smoothster kit. I did a little test with foil and some Tamiya clear red to see how the tail lights would look. Not perfect, but I think they will look respectable when done. Thanks for the kind words sir.

Hi Steve!

Thank you for the reply. Here's the same technique. I can confirm that it works. Keep on!

Hi Claude!  That looks like a sweet ride. My only concern is that the taillights and body colour will be almost identical. Not sure how that will look, but hoping for the best. How about a side view of the ‘38 please. I used that license plate on my ambulance. A19BC029-315A-4C4A-B7ED-7C1469060BCC.thumb.jpeg.e59cc6495e90ac092037943457d05989.jpeg
Thanks for the input sir!

Hi Steve!

Well, maybe you could trace the outline of the "lens" with the finest Molotow chrome pen... It would look like a chrome bezel around the lens. The shallow molding would probably avoid your pen tip to "skid" out of its way? Just an Idea!

Here's to the pics you asked for. I posted it on this forum under "1938 Lincoln SUV" if you want to see the underside /chassis/suspension.

Keep going with the Anglia. I have a Thames in my stash, and your project gets me thinking about it...

Good idea Claude, I may try that. Thanks for the photos, I will check out the rest of the 38 SUV photos. I love your builds.

Hi guys, another small update.

This might be the last before going “under glass”. To those of you that have followed along with my first WIP,  thanks! It’s been fun, especially having the UK gang’s input. In particular, a special thanks to Martin for the nudge to go for the hidden hinges and suicide doors. I had thought about it, but likely would not have done it without the input, so thanks.

The chassis is really close now, just need tie rod, steering link, and finish exhaust. I will use polished aluminium tubing for the exhaust tips, most of my builds have “tips”.  I added seat belts, and fire extinguisher to the interior. The body has its final colour coat now. I will be patient, and let that gas out for a few days before clearing it. After that, a few last details, polish out that orange peel, and final assembly. Sounds really easy now...

When complete, I will take a photo outside. The colour looks really awesome in the sun.
