1929 Ford Pickup 80's Contemporary Street Rod - A Tim Boyd Tribute!

Recommended Posts

Continued marching towards the paint shop picking up after myself... tidying up a few more loose ends:

487627021_29PUMockup_016.jpg.3deb8fd0e9a4971429e55e2c6dd366b2.jpg

Mocked up the engine with new Holly Carburetors from the original Revell Deuce Coupe kit (x2)

WP_20210927_012.jpg.21237fffb3baca4a45642a38d68fcd61.jpg

Worked on the door hinges...

1830843840_29PUMockup_015.jpg.7e800cbf20faabddb99731a4ff82181b.jpg

Started with the right side upper hinge:

WP_20210928_001.jpg.6c30a0a59214f944612f7bb5479b8741.jpg

Trimmed up the lower previously plugged door surround hinge:

WP_20210928_002.jpg.5cfdda040ed58afb26733e1046bf1fe4.jpg

Felt like the lower hinge was a bit thick compared to the upper hinge...WP_20210928_005.jpg.ee601cfa0d889b44bd68213b9cbf33ab.jpg

So, I cut the bottom off:

WP_20210928_009.jpg.42b20698af61b7b345fd1da6fd4014ad.jpg

Looks better, right?

WP_20210928_014.jpg.f818a3d7edf2be2c4db8306fb4479bcc.jpg

Fits good, after a bit of kleanup...

WP_20210928_016.jpg.c9430eb4d4148b9fa9f3f3590c750fe0.jpg

How 'bout from this angle?

WP_20210928_017.jpg.6cf0e806a808b1f14253d6825f020270.jpg

Better?

WP_20210928_019.jpg.f88c817c6f9b6ae82e419ffbd92c34d0.jpg

Tacked the lower hinge to the door:

WP_20210928_024.jpg.eb48884ed8c6bdf40b3e16795f39b5a2.jpg

Set it all together...

WP_20210928_025.jpg.3370e741c7918640f5cad1de1445b57a.jpg

Aligned the two closer together...

WP_20210928_026.jpg.03e7cb04ea47786446055a3529039b89.jpg

Applied a drop of CA on the inside between the hinge and the door frame surround:

WP_20210928_027.jpg.66c65108a5f9c83bcc3801213e5a7e2c.jpg

The fun tack blocks the CA from kreeping on to the door hinge edge.  Let the right side dry & went after the left side!

WP_20210928_028.jpg.bbf1a3e462d855570d0f0f42919a33bd.jpg

Repeated the same process detailed above on the left upper hinge:

WP_20210928_029.jpg.edd497d24b045eee5145d86c480a82b8.jpg

Will go in and file out the excess after both have dried completely over night.

WP_20210928_030.jpg.ed56da21858fff1f3a8ac2cdf5e40679.jpg

Next time, we'll go after the lower door hinges. -KK

btw I may work a little slow (including the # of times looking for each loose hinge more than a couple of times in the karpet beneath my work bench) but, each hinge so far has taken about an hour each!

@Kit Karson Kudos to the local model shop... is it still around?   -  Sadly no. That shop closed up years ago but we do still have one that opened up at about the time it closed. We have been fortunate to have a model shop in our provincial city where I live and I hope it manages to continue trading in these troubled times.

I am taking note of your hinge diet @Kit Karson and  I will certainly copy your work to get the hinges looking better

I have been working away ever so slowly on my build - life has a way of getting in the way of modelling time

I did not feel that the bare board underside of the roof was in keeping with the theme so I cut out a hood lining from some .010" sheet stock

IMG_6460.thumb.JPG.ea9a3f2afb05213b097a4931f403cc56.JPG

In the process I get rid of a couple of nasty ejection pin marks

Next up is prep work on the body. This issue of the kit has some much flash it is unbelievable. It also has these little nubs in hard to reach spaces - it looks like there may have been some corrosion in the mould. At least rust does not hit plastic as our stashes would be a pile of brown stuff from all the years of hiding them away. I don't remember the older orange version having this much flash or marks. I will have to check a newer version I have to see if it is any better. It took me the better half on an evenings work to get around the outside of the fender unit. I still have the inside yet to do

IMG_6462.thumb.JPG.f4da1119796381ec694187f92e5b6d7a.JPG

I can't wait to get some paint on this with my newly acquired Paasche Model H airbrush. I score from the local auction site. This is the third or fourth used airbrush I have picked up and all have been in a sorry state mostly with paint build up in critical areas like the mixing cone and internal ways. As all users of airbrushes know the old adage of "Cleanliness  is next to Godliness" applies

Enough rant - onwards with the build

The history of a kit, like the REVELL Ford Model A is a story in itself.  Thanks for sharing.  Looking back on the different places this kit came from and ended up in is most interesting, too!  Now we have, in this thread alone, almost all four corners of the planet being represented by modelers from around the world.  All working from the same pile of plastic parts from a cardboard box brought to us from halfway around the other side of that same world.  20K plus viewers watching over our shoulders, we with a slightly different take on the subject, yet each building the same model kit. Thanks for jumping in, Brother! -KK

Moving on...

@bill-e-boy I too was looking at the wooden roof skeleton and have been thinking about making a rolled & pleated headliner to match the bench seat from the roadster.

Great progress by all...exciting to see these come through the development/build process.

And belated congrats to this thread's "Father", Dennis, on his call-out  in issue #7 of Speed and Kulture magazine as the builder of the tranny in a very traditional early style 1/1 scale 1932 Ford Highboy Roadster....way to go, guy!

Gee, you do clean work, Kit!  I aspire to it but sometimes feel like I fall short.......again!  Lovely to watch the progress on this model.

I have been focussed on a different model for my model column in Austrlaian Street Rodding magazine but hope to get my doors hinged this week so that I am ready for the paint booth soon - we are just starting to get a bit of warm weather here after one of our coldest wettest winters in decades so it will be good to get the colour on.

Good luck with your painting efforts!

Cheers

Alan

Your very lucky to have a local modelshop. Here in the UK they are very few and far apart. We have a Hobbycraft store with only Tamiya stuff, they have just stopped selling Airfix so one of my contacts says. Tiny glue bottles, small bottles of paints and very few small brushes. No spray stuff at all. Another about 15 miles away concentrates on RC and railways and that's about it. We have to buy online, pay for shipping and wait in for deliveries.

Same here in Sweden I have a fairly local store 250km away with a good assortment of most materials and a good selection of kits but no “aftermarket” parts as wheels and such. Glad there is car-model-kit and an other Swedish store Virago supplying such aftermarket.

You can be glad that you have Hiroboy at least in UK, best store before brexit, a BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH nice guy as well, remember meeting him in 2006 in his GT-R, got to know him through AF.

Searching for the right taillights turned up a couple of pairs from the old Monogram The Beach Boys/Rockin' Rods Li'l Deuce Coupe...

Kleaned up and ready for their new stop light red lenses...

After a light sanding, hit them with the chrome pen & then a drop of "Stop Light Red" (Note: the best result comes from NOT shaking the paint up... the clear red sits on top of the paint, just a single drop on each taillight, works good)

@tim boydtruer words, ever spoken... from your lips to the world, Brother!  Too many nay-sayers gripe about the missed details in any given model, only to brag about their knowledge of a given subject.  Too many new/rereleased model kits have minor flaws... some correctable, or represented better in another version of the same model.  When the first '32 Ford model hit the shelves in your local dime-store/hobby shop, many were over joyed that we had a model to start from.  Not a perfect start, but better than the pine-wood carved body from a solid block of balsa/bass wood.  Few ever do the research to find out how a car/truck was originally created/produced.  If it's wrong... fix it!  If it's bent... straighten it!  If the model car manufacture missed or messed up certain details... calling them out won't resolve the issue, but in some cases subsequent re-issues may address the problem.  Or, not!  This is a HOBBY not science!  It's a HOBBY not a religion!!  It's a HOBBY... an art form!!!  An individual expression of one's own idea of how something can be assembled from a box of associated pieces.  A cumulation of bits and details from a sorted mind and vision of something to be.  Every model builder has some skills... and those skills improve with every effort put forth.  Mistakes can be corrected, errors found can be overcome, nothing is made perfect or is it?  Perfection is an aspiration... inspiration is everywhere and satisfaction is subjective. Keep building and sharing your experiences! -KK

Burgundy?  Should look very cool! How are you going to hold your doors while painting, Kit?

I painted my frame about a month ago but in view of the cold, damp weather here I waited a long time before handling it.  Got the rear brakes and wheels/tyres on today, with the front  axle and wheels and tyres just mocked up for today.  Still got to come up with an exhaust, a driveshaft and some sort of an intake.  Still haven't tackled the hinges - just wasn't in the right frame of mind and I expect to take few nights to get them right.  At least I have made some headway.

Cheers

Alan
