Kit - I hope round two of your paint job works out better than the first

I have been spending time getting things cleaned up ready for paint

I block sanded the inner of the tail gate only to find it is blank on the outside - but at least it is smooth on the inside. Been working on the firewall recess and floor board area, cleaning up the pick up bed. There are lots of shrink holes all over the kit so takes time to sand and fill these areas. Next will be the doors

 

 

When rummaging around in the bottom of the model boxes I found some bits and just could not help myself

We recently went on a mid-week cruise and ended up at a Rodder's place and he had a 32 PU with a banger with OHV conversion - which caused a light bulb moment - PU bed candy

So I started with the basis A block, gear box and other bits. The Cragar head is basically just a lump and that was easy to build up by layering plastic sheet to get the ight height. The original water pump bolts up as does the inlet manifold

 

Head needed a little machining to create the spark plug recesses - onto the mill to do that. had to make up a 2mm cutter to do that first

 

The head bolts are on a landed area so drilled out and glued some round stock - just need tidying up

The crowning glory is an ally rocker cover I machined up - it was a mission as it is the first rocker cover I have machine so I now have a system that should work in the future 

 

So a little side trip to break up the tension with being heavily involved in a one kit build

It has been a point of concern, not only for me, but also to a couple of other mates as well!!  

@Speedprovisited my Kave this last weekend to attend our NNL (see below)... and he has custody of the 1929 Ford Pickup 80's Contemporary Street Rod - A Tim Boyd Tribute, the build that I started.  Waldo & I have done this sort of thing before. 

'37 Ford Fat-O-Fender (ACME Meeting 3-5-17)

Back in the day, he restored '37 Ford Fat-O-Fender(above).  It was a cover car(model) for Cruzin Magazine(some 30 years ago).  And, I still have it today, so having Waldo ask if he could do the redo I had to say, YES! (with a tear of admiration in my eye... what an honor!)  Thanks, Brother -KK

Hi Bill and Kit, great to hear you are progressing.  I have taken a few small steps lately but nothing worth photographing.  Got sidetracked this week on some ancient 1/32nd scale builds and it has been a pleasant break from the intensity of getting the Boyd P.U. just right.  Should be back on the horse shortly!

Before i get going on kit's repaint project, I would like to say that my 4,588 mile round trip from my home in kalispell montana to kit's home as well as attend the Acme Southern Nationals in atlanta was worth every minute of the 70 hours behind the wheel. Thank you kit and your wonderful wife donna for your hospitality brother. I hated leaving! Really miss you both. 

On to the truck repaint. As you already know, kit has taken care of stripping the paint. After accessing the parts, There is a lot of sanding to be done to get them ready for primer. The frame is also currently in the tank removing the paint as it needs to be redone also. For the most part, Kit did a good job removing the paint so far. I will be test fitting all the parts making sure assembly will be as smooth as possible. Here is a picture of what i brought home with me.........

 

 

Let the fun begin. I will update progress as i get through this. Sanding will take some time i think......

Had the frame for Kits '29 in the tank overnight. Came out very clean and but still needs a going over. One of the motor mounts fell off and needs to be reattached. Stripped the rear end also as the paint was light in some areas.

@Speedpronow that we've talked about some of the deficiencies, I feel confident that the '29 in in the right hands.  Handing it off to you wasn't as difficult as watching you leave to go back to Montana!  Glad you had a safe return trip, Brother!  Keep us up to date on your progress! -KK

OK...so that explains it.  I was thinking I must have missed a key point in the thread here. 

Kit....takes real guts to hand off a project to someone else but will be great for you (and us) to see it finished.

It's not the first time... over the last three plus decades I've passed several builds off to other great modelers!  Any time two or more modelers get to contribute to particular build the best of the contributor always immerges!  Case in point: the '37 Ford Fat-O-Fender (above) Paul (@Speedpro) & I built it almost thirty years. @Rocking Rodney Rat(RRR) & I have collaborated on a number of builds and a select few have been passed on to other luminaries in our hobby.

It all started with a sketch that Rodney (RRR) brought to my attention:

our SD 40 de Aire had more air-miles than most frequent flyers!  RRR laid down a fine Candy Orange Flak paint job:

Fast forward to March of 2019... I had a conversation with a well respected kustom model kar builder and exchanged mailing addresses.

RRR had located the missed placed K&R Kustoms+Rods SD 40 de Aire after a brief search and packaged it up and it was on the move a month later.

Again, the SD 40 de Aire was stripped, honed, with a new beltline added and a new layer of primer added:

And, the new owner, "Chopper" Ted Lear, was caught sharing the K&R Kustoms+Rods SD 40 de Aire prior to the 40th NNL in Toledo in late 2019:

This is the last picture he sent me before he passed, R.I.P. Brother!

I know where Chopper is, but the whereabouts of the restored SD 40 de Aire is still unknown. -KK

KK&RRR....that is quite a story, and a really inspiring piece of work.   With four pro builders involved, no less!  

I myself confess to being a stingy modeler (as well as a "scale bigot" per Mike Siegman, said with a smile but more than a bit of truth, that).  So I've never passed on one of my unfinished projects. (There were over 70 of them when I retired 8 years ago, several since finished but even more started....).   I did however take an unfinished model from my longtime modeling buddy Chuck Helppie and complete it.  It was his John Buttera-inspired highboy.  Chuck, the 1977 MPC National Modeling Championship Grand Champion, was ever the perfectionist and wanted to start over with his Highboy build, so I convinced him to give me his castoff so I could finish it.  I recall putting a new paint job on (but repeating his choice of decal graphics), and finishing the interior and wheel/tire choice, but most of what you see here was Chuck's work.  He later told me he regretted giving it away after seeing the finished result.  But I think he was happy to see it reach a finished form.   And his own finished model, the second version, was a spectacular piece itself.

I was able to catch up with the owner of the Banger powered 32 Pickup and was able to get some more pix of the other side of the motor

I have squirted some colour onto my banger - Tamiya Titanium Gold - and have partly assembled the motor

The gold has picked up the green from the work mat

In the background I have been steadily working on parts getting ready for paint and some are in first coat of primer to check that prep work is looking OK. There is an amazing amount of sink marks that need attention on the body parts which I suppose is not surprising giving the age of the kit and the knowledge base that was available back when the kit was designed - injection moulding was fairly new technology in the early 60's

I really enjoyed reading about this project Kit - I saw this build in that Model Car Muse video about Ted and it caught my eye, and it immediately had me wanting to build one just like it!  What a cool project - but an even cooler story!

Kit - I hope you can get your hands on the SD40 - looks like a cool project with a lot of history

I have been spending time on the bed candy - nearly done

Got some colour on the interior parts

Tamiya flat blue with semigloss on the seats, door cards and headlining - i need to break up the monotony of Pacific Blue that everything else is/will be painted

The floor parts and cab roof left in flat - it has a bit more gloss than what I would expect from a flat paint

More work to be done on cab alignment, door fitting and hood so will post when I have done a bit more

Good progress there Bill.  I am just getting back to things after life and work got in the way over the last month or so.  I have decided not to leave the doors operational.  When I got my parts out last night one door frame had spontaneously broken - how I hate the brittleness of early Revell parts!  I want to keep enjoying this build so they are getting glued shut!

I made a stand for the bed candy

I was not happy with the bare look to the rear end. I tried the rolled pan that is in the kit but it is a bit blah. I had removed the moulded in tail lights but could see that it was not going to gel with the overall theme. Also it looks like it does not fit very well either and it would be a glue on part later

So I have used a simpler approach and filled in the gap between the bed rails. I also filled in the under part too

Waiting for the glue to set up I moved on the the cab interior

I am using the Lil'John dash so need to fill the steering hole

I will replace the blah dash detail with some photo etch

Kwick update from @Speedpro... Paul said he's klose to adding a primer coat to the pristine pickup & trailer.  Yup!  He's kleaned every piece of plastik and reworked & improved the rear suspension.  We share the same koncern regarding the attitudes of the pu & tagalong boxes.  Ride height, fender klearence & tire placement are krucial!  Some fun diskussion has included the final kolor & assembly... oh, & the possibility of the latter okkurring together! -KK

Spelling correction

Hi All

In the last post I filled the hole in the Lil John dash. I was not happy with the shallow engraving on the dash so I smoothed it out for some photo etch I have had for yonks. I painted the dash dark blue flat with semi-gloss clear to match the rest of the interior

The slot at the top of the dash looked a bit blah so I cut some silver plated craft wire long enough to fit into the slot - 3 pieces worked OK

This is a huge improvement - looks better with less magnification

Next up was the steering column. I have an after market one as shown but the hub is too long for this application. The billet dash is a S&S item that I cut the supplied gauge faces and glued to the back. This was glued to the dash with some Tamiya clear which was also used for the gauge glasses

For a more suitable column I machined a hub to fit some 2.4mm dia ally tube and fitted to the Lil John steering wheel. I actually machined 2 hubs 1x 3mm dia and the other 3.5mm. I will use the 3mm with a column drop that is waiting for paint

Meanwhile I have been busy with paint prep on the body components. A primer guide coat to check for SNAFU's which were cleaned before second primer coat

Always a good milestone getting primer on. It took a lot of effort to get rid of flash, sunken areas on flat panels and ejector pin marks and blending the changes in

 

The to do list is getting shorter:

- Fit doors - this part I fear but I will re-read Kit's methodology for the doors 

- Sort out hood and radiator placement - not sure how this is going to work out yet

- complete chassis construction

- Detail chassis 

- Add some more detail to motor

- Paint it

See a short list - LOL

After working on kits 29' ford truck for the last few weeks, It is at a point where it's ready for some primer on all the parts. Bummer is, It's real cold right now here in kalispell and i'm going to wait till it warms up a bit before i try to put down any paint. Don't want to have a paint failure getting in a big hurry. Here is a little of what's got done ............................

 

Worked on the frame replacing the frame cross member above the rear differential. The replacement cross member used is out of the 29' roadster kit with everything shaved off of it.

Added the upper shock mount. Figured the shock length and cut them down to fit. Figured and added a pan hard bar. 

 

 

With the suspension out of the way, Both the body and trailer were completely massaged and any fit issues were taken care of along the way. I just have to say, kit did a amazing job building the trailer. It's a model all in it's self. 

 

 

 

Also, the engine was taken apart and stripped of paint. It is currently in pieces. All in all, everything looks good. Can't wait to see some color on everything. I'll update when things start moving along again.

Nice update! The rear chassis revisions look great, especially the fab work for the panhard. Really looking forward to seeing this back in color. 
 

And you’re right, the trailer Kit built really is bitchin.
