‘27 T Touring Hot Rod

Recommended Posts

I got inspired to build a T Touring after seeing @tim boyd’s excellent box stock build of the old AMT kit on his Fotki page:

Tim built a much older issue of this kit than I had here, so it has some different (cooler) parts than the later issue I had here, but I figured I could do something inspired by his example anyway.  Having just moved and set up a new workshop here I wanted to do a nice simple box stock (ish) build for once, so here we are...

Built the kit almost as AMT intended except for swapping out the tires for some parts-box ones, swapped the rear wheels for some chrome steelies (one of the kit ones was junk in the kit I ordered), wired the engine and painted some vertical flames inspired by an Indian Larry bike I saw earlier in the year.

Not a super complex full-detail build, but this was super fun and just fell together!  Love these old AMT kits - and they build up to a great looking model!

Thanks for looking (and to Tim for allowing me to post his photo, and for the inspiration!)

Looks amazing, I like the little crank handle on the front. Those vertical flames are nice, looks like a bathtub being warmed up by fire, haha!

Hi Jim!

Well, you may well have invented a new trend here... Camp-fire flames. Who knew?

Unusual but fun.

I really like the flames too. While horizontal flames are suppose to make a car look like its moving even when its standing still, yours would give the opposite impression. I can hear all the losers crying at the drag strip now, "He passed me as if he was standing still! 😄

Thanks everybody!  I can’t take any credit for the flame idea, I’m sure it’s been done a bunch before, but this is where I got the idea:

Mine aren’t as good as these, obviously...but I’d like to try them again now I know they (kinda) work on a car too!

Very very nicely done Jim !  Love the small added details and the flames !  After years of mega detailing models I now prefer much simpler builds detailed with paint and built clean and crisp . . . you nailed it ! :D

Magic!  Everything about it is different and yet it feels like an old friend.  Still thinking of a colour combo for mine but hope to join the party soon.

As for the flying eyeball, I wonder how many other hot rod modellers right now are going "Why didn't I think of that!!??!!??!!

Cheers

Alan

Great results Jim! I followed your WIP thread with great interest and found it informative. Your use of colour is very striking with the use of yellow offering a contrast to the monotone scheme, a real eye catcher. Congrats and Cheers, Misha.
