'88 944 Turbo Cup [1/24 Hasegawa]

This is Hasegawa's recent re-release of their older 944 turbo kit. I didn't like the livery it came with, and I love how some Porsche cup cars often race in white lacking any sort of large livery and stay street legal with license plates.

Turbo cup had numerous upgrades over stock 951 (extensive  weight savings, larger turbo, updated suspension and brakes, etc) and I heard that 944 Turbo cup was also very popular in Canada and it even aired live on TV back then.

Kit pros:
- proportion of body is very accurate
- realistic engine and suspension
- photo etched seat belts included

Kit cons:
- sub par fit of front hood and clear window parts
- trunk spoiler, emblem, and door handles are molded when so many other parts are separate
- front suspension sits little too high

Build detail
- Tamiya white surfacer
- wet sanded w/ 2000 grit
- 2 mist coats and 1 wet coat of TS-26 pure white
- 1 mist and 2 wet coat of TS-13 clear
- wet sanded w 3000 grit, then polished with Tamiya three-stage compounds
- added ignition wires, fuel rail to otherwise stock engine bay
- added etched hood pins
- replaced stock 4 spoke steering wheel with something more appropriate

Very nice.  I have an ongoing rally project based on the Italeri kit.

Thank you. I'm not sure why they don't make racing variation of 924/944, like GTP/GTR.

Thank you! This was re-released with the Shell livery.

Very nice clean build. It looks good in white.

Thank you. Privateer racing cars look the best in white!

Very nice build, this caught my eye. I used own a real one, road version of course.

Thank you. My friend has an early 85' 944 and I actually preferred driving that over g-body 911.

Nice, I've always liked the 944, and the 924.

Those don't get as much attention but great cars for sure!

I like it! Have always been a  fan of the 944 series.

As you've built it, it looks a lot like the Rothman's Turbo cup series we had in Canada, as you alluded to.

I worked for the local Porsche dealer form most of the 90s and the early 2000s. We actually had one of the Rothman's cars. The series had a backup car that was there in case there was a crash or a breakdown. Somehow, it slipped through the cracks, and we bought it, and subsequently sold it. Then it was traded back, and we sold it to the Taj Ma Garaj, who subsequently added the Rothman's graphics to it. The car just went up for auction last year when the Garaj shut down.

Our car was Guards Red with the white wheels. And it was an absolute beast in autocrossing.

The chronology listed is slightly off, as it was us that sold the car in 2002, not the previous owner.

Anyway...

Anyway...

Yes exactly. I lamented why Hasegawa would bother with these liveries, instead of releasing Rothman's livery (which is defunct anyways).

Awesome that you had the Rothman's 944 Turbo Cup car at the dealer! I was actually looking at that Guards red car as one of the reference pictures. The amount of modification alone would make these cars very special, let alone a significant historical value. The sub $100k final price  shows how much undervalued 944s are..

Very nice!  Very Germanic.  Or Teutonic.  Whichever - lovely model!  That's my 2nd favorite Turbo badge after the one on the front of the Saab 99.

Thank you! Haven't seen much saab scale model kits but I'd love to build 99!

Love the build! Reminds me of my Dad's street car back when I was growing up...his had the black with polished lip Fuchs wheels though.

Black fuchs look the best in my opinion!
