Mercedes Outlaws & Hot Rods

Recommended Posts

Topic for inspiration, on how far can one go with sacrilegious blasphemy in ruining a perfectly good Mercedes Benz.   AMG started the idea of hot rodding them, and now they are a factory subsidiary, so they shouldn't count.  Maybach could be included, the Excelero was a one off hot rod.  B+B was a customizer.  I don't think gold wrapped Benzes should count, they are a dime a dozen. ?  If there is a cult name for these cars, let me know.

Starting off with a rendering of a 300 SL:

Oops, the red and gold hot rod is an alfa, could an admin delete it please

It's not an Alfa. It's an RM Riley, probably an RME (dark blue badge, full running boards).

My first car was one of these.

Cheers,

-Don.

A Mercedes shop in my old Los Angeles neighborhood built itself a "Merc-amino."  An '70's (?) era Mercedes station wagon converted into a pick-up truck.  Wish I had taken some pix.

This wasn't a hack job.  The conversion was very well done, looking like something the Mercedes factory might have built.  It was painted dark blue with the shop name professionally lettered in white.  I saw it running around for years, parked at the shop or hauling parts.

Then I didn't see it any more.  One day at the local post office, I ran into a mechanic who worked at the shop.  Asked him what happened to the Merc-amino.  He said it started costing more in repairs than it was worth, and the shop junked it.

Does the Kindig Designs Mercedes count?

Since you are a Moderator, OF COURSE THIS COUNTS!   Just the wheels are a clue, that engine looks beautiful, with the cast aluminum intakes that look perfectly 1950.

Thanks for the contribution.  I like this one, still have wheel covers in that design, from a 190 Evo build.

Earl Bruce's Von Dutch flamed Gullwing was pretty upsetting to the sports car purists back in the fifties.

That was also when they were worth what, $10,000?  Try that today and hire a body guard.  ?

LOL knew someone would have a collection of photos to dump!  My personal favorites:
I built the Fujimi 190 2.0E Evo, which is a simple curbside kit, that would be fun to kitbash with a DTM.
I built the Heller 170 into  My dad's Mercedes 170V Roadster, would be tempted to get another kit to create a hot rod.  I should have had the body copied for casting, who would have liked that?
I grew up with a 1961 190 sedan, I know there is a scarce kit from an obscure manufacturer, I'm sure it's more toy than model.  Have thought about what a coupe would look like, and someone built one!  That's awesome.  ?

Some of these are awesome! For years  I have had a few ideas on how to upset the purists with a model of a MB, these just add more fuel to the fire.

Cool!  Was hoping to get others to dare to be different.

Thank you for the picture dump too!

My favorites:
Any 170V.
The 300 SLC is different, tasteful.
The 190SLs are nice.
The Ute, that could be done with any sedan, must be someone who will be inspired.

Thanks for the story!  I know someone who hates MB, was telling me about what a maintenance nightmare they are.  How many 600SEL have you seen on the road?  When I was going home from Las Vegas where he lives, saw out in the middle of nowhere on the side of the road, you guessed it.

Thanks for the modern versions.  Is it sacrilege to modify a new car?  Was expecting a Masonry version to show up.  Love this paint color.

All of these great looking cars makes me think we might start seeing a new direction in some builds here. I know I got a few ideas.

That is my intent.  Someone built the popular (blue one 3 posts up) into a Mad Max version.  I was hoping for some old "collectible" kits to be pulled out of a stash.  This is a serious idea of mine, double blasphemy of modifying a famous prototype that was never sold to the public, with the legendary Le Mans winner.

I really like Jay Leno's Survivor Gullwing. Customized back in the day with a Candy Apple Paint job that drives the Purists nuts!

Jay Leno Reviews 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe: Video | Top Speed

Funny how just a paint job triggers aficionados.  ?  To leave it in the patina state is double jeopardy, but that's what is cool about Leno.  I have another project idea, my dad had a friend who had a Gullwing under a tarp in the back yard, which is a future diorama idea.

Thank you everyone for contributing! ?

Wonder if that 3rd one is now Leno’s!

Oh my, imagine the new neon green on a Gullwing.   No idea about Leno's car history, need to watch his video again.  Cool vintage photos.

Nice topic. I saw the KindigIt Merc the other day and that lead to a search party... Some really weird stuff going on, as well as some beautiful cars.

I dig the Foose and KindigIt modern approach and that 190 EVO sketch is really cool as well.

Some examples I found (beware, some are awful!!)

Digging the Shooting Brake.  I want to do a TR8, not a difficult conversion.
I've been looking at the G-wagen kit, that is an interesting idea.
Awesome studio pictures of that Roadster.
Thanks for the contribution.
