Been doing some tinkering with the model and testing out the wheel and tire combo. Front wheel look way to big, so a smaller tire will be needed. Also ride height is wrong. Need to do a better mock-up to determine how much it has to be lowered but at least 2mm in the front. 
 

been doing some sanding to The body and trying to come up with a plan for the vents. I would like to keep them But they are molded shut and it seems like a pita to get them open, the plastic is tick! Use to work wit Tamiya and this body is so much thicker plastic. Will make it hard to open the hood as well with my current tools. I have also been fooling around with seats. Might go with a set of stock C5 seats to keep the illusion up that it’s a stock, just slightly modifyed C5... it would also be gooD for highway comfort. Will se if I manage to cramp Co driver seat in there.

I recently learned that Oscar Koveleski passed away at 88. Oscar is the founder of Autoworld and a road racing legend. He also finished second in the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash along with his teammates Tony Adamowicz and Brad Niemcek.

It's nice to know that the Cannonball Run and model cars have that connection. It makes this community build that much more important to me now.

Personally, I wouldn't go too low. Remember, this is for public highways across several states, not a nice clean race track. A little road clearance might be nice. (That's why I didn't drop Stupidbird lower in the front.) 

But it's YOUR model of course, so build it any way YOU want to. Drive on!

Work has slowed a little on the Impala. However I did get the engine in recently and I now have it painted. I am really impressed with the details of this LS Chevy engine. It is a 3D printed one off EBay. 

However, the LS engine in real life is 50 shades of grey and silver due to being nearly all aluminum. There are a few black parts. So, base coated with aluminum, highlighted with some Tamiya panel line and finished off with some black details and red oil filter. 

The 3D engine came with an Allison trans from a truck, I added a 2wd tail cone. I figure with the abuse this Cannonball racer will get, the truck trans will be a good heavy duty choice.

Looks fantastic. I have the 5.2L Ford engine. Been debating putting it in my Mustang. I wasn't going to originally, but I may now since I have it. Really impressed with the level of detail coming from these 3D printed engines.

Do you have a Dremel tool?  It's one of the most used tools I use, can't do without it.

That's a nice looking engine!  We are lucky to have so many engines nowadays to choose from.

I got the chassis painted with the silver I'll be using on the body.

And I got the floor pan painted black. I thought a black interior would help make any modifications or countermeasures less noticeable.

I also got the brakes painted. The brakes on this thing are huge! 

This car sits very low. I'd like to lift the suspension a few scale inches, but I'm not sure if I will. The suspension isn't just lowered, it's completely re-engineered to sit that low.

Nice progress, guys! I've been out of the hobby room since last week, but am hoping to finally start in this weekend.

Been spending a bit of time at the workbench massaging the body, especially trimming the inside stock fenders to fit the extended wheel wells. Also opened up the two large openings for air and the two side inlets for brakes. Then  positioning the BBC in the chassis to see check the fit of the kit headers and the rather large assortment of accessory belts and would they fit in the engine compartment. It’s a tight fit for sure! Also thinking about the sequence for assembly. Will position the long block then, after the body with inner fenders is on, I’ll position the water pump/front cover with the accesories.  After which I’ll add the intake assembly. Not my usual sequence when the engine goes in as one piece. Keeping my ? fingers crossed!

 

Note that even after doing the radius there was a need to provide further clearance for rear meats.
 

Had quite a bit of work getting the headers prepped as they had to be sawn away from the kit engine, having been glued on by the previous owner. Trimmed around the header flanges making room for the plug wires. 

Had a look at the various references from above to the  past actual Cannonballs, found it quite useful in planning for the current build. A lot of the mods dealt with the  increased use of technology, most evident in the cockpit.  Using parts box seats I enhanced the panel lines, especially on the side bolsters. For the driver’s position I tilted the seat back a few degrees for arms out driving. Both seats had to have a mounting structure to raise them for a better fit in the cockpit.

Moving on to the chassis I removed the rear trunk well and gas tank in preparation for a longer range fuel tank making use of the open space and saving time by reducing the number of stops consumed at gas stations. Planning on fitting a differential cooler back there as well. Also needed to trim the rear chassis for it to fit with the rear  tail-light panel in place as it is a poor fit as provided. Also needed to finesse the fit of the previous owner’s installation of a race style refuelling outlet allowing it to slide in with the interior. To help the fit of the interior tub I’ve been using the Dremel to smooth out the fit to the chassis plate, trial and error style!

What, you don't think the cop is gonna hear the open, completely unmuffled exhaust?   He'll probably hear the thing coming before his radar picks it up!

I would like to join in with this ’41 Willys.  As luck would have it, I got my new Hot Rod today and there was a short article about a ’41 Willys with Art Morrison coil over chassis and 2015 Corvette LS3.  That isn’t exactly the way I was going, but the limited photos in the article may provide some inspiration. I have a couple other ideas for a more Interstate friendly suspension.  I plan on keeping the 392 hemi and automatic, but converting the intake over to either a stack or barrel EFI.  If time and skill permit, I may try to make some type of coil on or near plug conversion with either a FAST or Mega Squirt controller.  I am also toying with the idea of trying to put a Porsche whale tail on the trunk so that from the rear it looks like some kind of weird Porsche.  A word of advice, don’t google search Mega Squirt, but try diyautotune.com

I hope I am doing this in the right place I would like to join this build with the merge of a gt1 endurance car and a Lexus I plan to keep it in the spirit of the current era of cannonball era with a twist . I will keep it updated as I build If all goes to plan will be mid engined with a stock outer appearance will most likely have a bunch of 3D parts required and it goes on . Sorry for the long post it’s been 10 years since I have been on a forum . I look forward to seeing all the great builds on this theme .mike

Not to worry Richard, there will be a single tailpipe coming out the back with a set of gates near the end of the headers to divert the exhaust either way. Hopefully the team will know when to switch from the open exhausts!

Lots of great progress guys. Keep the updates coming.

I put some primer on tonight to see what fixes I need on the hood still. I still havent filed down the  hood over the headlights yet.

 I also drilled out some holes on the roof for the antennas I'll be running. 

I also added a "I dont know what it is" box to the roof from a Subaru rally car, it looks like it might be a camera pod, I honestly dont know. 

For the purpose of my build its going to be a FLIR radar pod..cause I said so.

The wheels on it atm are the kit wheels and tires but will not be what I'm going to use, they're just on there for the time being.

? I'm a big fan of this "don't know what it is" category. I love cars to drive & look at, but I'm not hugely mechanical so am always having to research the purpose the oily/electrical bits of kits!!

If you aren't already using, I highly recommend this for straight up plastic to plastic. Best stuff there is.

That's what I will be using for my final assembly of bare plastic. I was trying tacky glue because I haven't had good luck using tape to temporarily hold parts together. It tends to stick to my fingers better than plastic. Of course, I haven't tried my Tamiya tape yet.
