Olskoolrodder Posted January 4, 2021 Share Posted January 4, 2021 (edited) Very cool, Ken!  I grew up in the 80's and learned to play the bass guitar in church, but being a metal-head teenager when bands like Metallica ruled, LOL, I quickly found a group of like minded kids at my school who also played and when we weren't racing around on dirt bikes, we were busy pretending to be rock stars learning and playing rock music in somebody's garage or shed, LOL! When I graduated high school I joined the Army and never really came back to it, but always threatened "to someday buy a guitar and learn to play it". Fast forward 30 years or so, I still love the sound of heavy metal and hard rock (though being devout in my faith, I have little interest in the lyrics anymore). So 11-22, having discovered a Guitar Center in my area, I bought one of those "Squier by Fender starter packs" with a Squier Strat and small amp and started learning from YouTube videos (some were actual teaching videos, some just music videos and I'd watch the guitarist) and have been loving finally learning a little. I wasn't getting (even close to) the sound I was wanting from that setup, even after adding a pedal to get heavier sounds, so after a few weeks I sold off a few knives (another hobby) and upgraded to an Ibanez RG series guitar and BOSS Katana 50 II amp and love both! Look over the mess, (it's an extra bedroom and my wife's current home-office, LOL), and the Drop D, my left hand was surgically repaired (more like the internals were surgically replaced ?) after an on the job injury in 2001, so unfortunately it doesn't always have the fine motor skills to play everything with chords alone (Drop tunes are a life saver for that in a lot of songs). This is from "week 5" of learning to play (this past weekend ?), a little Alice in Chains and Soundgarden---coincidently, my neighbors probably LOVE me now ?? Mike C. Posted February 28, 2022 Share Posted February 28, 2022 I feel guilty. I haven't picked up any of my guitars in like 2 years. No more calluses on my fingers. My Amp head and speaker cabinet are not even in the same room anymore. Neither me or any of my music friends are in any bands anymore. I wound up selling off all of my good guitars, basses, amps and various pedals to my friends who were still in bands over the years. Mike C. Posted February 28, 2022 Share Posted February 28, 2022 I started out with guys like Clapton and Jimmy Page and of course Hendrix. I liked Robin Trower for ever. When I started to play, it evolved into J Mascis and Graham Coxon.  Although they are known more for their song writing over the years, Paul Weller and Paul Westerberg are both suprisingly phenomenal guitar players as well. I have a Fender Strat, Epiphone Les Paul and a Takamine acoustic. I sold most of my amps and just use a multi effects/amp modeler board now. My favorite band is the Allman Brothers, I like trying to learn some of their songs, not making much progress. lucky 130 Posted March 1, 2022 Share Posted March 1, 2022 Started playing in 1966 on a Kay guitar my mom bought me with S&H Green stamps. The strings sat about 3" off the frets. I kept at anyway, and saved money for a better guitar. Bought several, an Epi. Casino from 65, an L3 Gibson from 1918. Never hit it, but the years playing were the most pleasureable times of my life. I like the original lineup best with Duane and Dicky. But yea, all the lineups were good. I especially like Warren and Dicky together. Warren is great, and I always thought Dicky's playing was underrated. Have you heard the live album they did at A&R Radio Studios back in 71 I think. They started out on my old equipment with what I taught them and they grew from there and far surpassed my abilities! I started out in the mid 60's with an Audition 6 string I bought on layaway at Woolworths. Played in a fer garage bands playing rhythm guitar and drums. Traded the 6 string for a Hofner Bass and Bass and Drums were pretty much all played except maybe some rhythm guitar on 60's rock. Don't have much left as for equipment. a Squire Strat Affinity I just recently purchased and a couple kits I'm building.
