What Are You Planning/Hoping to Build in 2021?

Recommended Posts

Every year I make a list of 8 or 10 or 12 models I really want to build that year. Plans always change of course, and I don't think I've ever crossed everything off a list, although of course others get added as I go and lately I've been ending with a pretty decent total for the year.

What are you planning--or at least hoping--to build in 2021? Here's my "To-Do" list at the moment.

70 Superbird glue bomb—Cannonball group build

65 Chevelle dirt tracker—Cannonball group build

67 GTO glue bomb rescue—should be a quick project for a Day Two build

65 Impala convertible custom--a "double build" with Can-Con's project.

66 Skylark Craftsman rebuild completion—possible BOYD project

74 Corvette promo resto completion—possible BOYD project

62 Nova glue bomb rebuild--high school hot rod

69 Nova completion—possible BOYD project

68 Cougar—at least one, maybe 2, maybe 3

69 Javelin promo resto

71 Chevelle completion

63 Corvette--white polished plastic

AMT '66 Corvette rebuild—at least one, maybe 2 or 3

64 Cutlass HT—resin body with other original 1964 parts

65 Chevelle AMT Craftsman—resto/rescue

65 GTO glue bomb rebuild

69 Corvair V8—possible Cannonball group build

75-79 Nova—one or more possible projects

I don't typically plan ahead. I just grab kits from the stash as they strike my fancy.

Having said that, I have a few goals.

Volvo VN780 & trailer - BRBO 2021 build

Everything that has already been started! Includes a couple of trucks, a bunch of cars, and I do want to finally finish the horrible AMT Superstones kit that I put in a box in frustration a few years ago. I also have a Superbird that's been stalled for at least a year, that I should be finishing.

Nice list Snake but a little light on the Mustangs.  ?  The Cougar would be nice to see.

My list would include some Fujumi GT40s, Lemans Miniatuures GT40’s, HRM Cobra Daytona Coupe, Hasegawa 427 Cobra, whatever I did not finish last year, as many Mustangs as I can and maybe some 1/43 kits too.  We shall see how it goes but at some point I also need to start on at least a few 1/12 kits (72 Mustang and GT40 MKII) since in theory I will have at least 45 “extra” hours a week to build since I am no longer working.  I cannot wait for my wife to ask my what I did when she gets home and I can say I worked on model cars all day. ?

Kinda ambitious aren't ya Mr Snake? ?

Me?  Hold my beer!    (And don't try to hold me to this!)

First I am finishing up my Jeepster and companion Jeep and it's trailer this year. There is a second Jeepster on the bench. I do have the long hardtop coming, so I don't know if this one will have that, or if that will be a third build. Yea, I do have three original Jeepster kits.

For the 24 Hour Build, I will be building me a Red Chariot. I don't have the classic box. I have later releases of the phaeton, and I have all the original unique parts that make this car.    That adds a unit to my Monogram Model A shelf.

Which leads me to this boat tail Model A for the same shelf.. I need to finish it.

This is a "Before" photo of the 57 sport wagon.  I have it stripped, the post repaired and primed.  I will do a quick build on it to add to my 57 Ford custom lineup.

mustang_front1-vi.jpg.08922aa0e76dd0ce55bddea82b096f7b.jpg

My theme the past few years has been attacking old builds that were never finished. This Mustang has been around a looong time.  That photo is in the garden of my old house. It should be an easy completion. All the hard work is done.  Maybe my first "Bring Out Your Dead" candidate for 2021.

1432478700_51chevy.jpg.c2c8dbae6bf955e365cdbbd51835c376.jpg

Another one that needs to be finished.

plywagon1-vi.jpg.be9ba003406b6181156a32517bd6f86a.jpg

And this one makes an occasional return to the bench. I'd like to finish it this year. Every time I post photos of the project, some guy goes nutz that I ruined two old Johan classic kits to build this... actually there's three of them in here!  ?  And they were $10 models when I did it. That's how long this one has been waiting.

mamas_buy_pictures002-vi.jpg.5353471d1aa50a956499d1404e31870a.jpg

And another old resto that's sitting in the corner of my side bench!  1962 Valiant that some kid put the 41 Lincoln?  uptop on as a carson top.  Lotza bad putty, it's all been sanded since this photo.  Uses the custom nose.  You can see the influence of the Bobtail Cat here, which is why this never finished relic must be completed!

I also have an idea for the 77 Ford van kit I recently bought at Hobby Lobby.

If I get through all that this year, wow!  Just hoping it's not another year of lock down!

Note that I won't be held responsible for the above post, and it should not be seen as a contract of any kind.  I retain the right to declare  "Look a squirrel!"  at any time during the year and go off on some crazy unforeseen modeling adventure.  Hey, it's a hobby, it's gotta be fun!

I've got a few I want to build this year. First will be the ford escort mk2 for the cannonball. I'll be clearing the bench when the revell vw t2 is released as its been on my wishlist for a long time. I'm hoping to build one of the recently released campers before then. I'm also hoping to get one of the new version of the audi UR quattro rally cars to convert into a homolgation road car and a nunu audi r8 to miix with one of the revell roadsters for a stanced out road car. I'd like to build a MAN truck and trailer with some sort of load on it (possibly a spitfire) and I have a few stalled builds to complete (48 ford woody, model A van, 65 chevy crew cab, vw 412, 33 willys, lexus ls400 with a nissan engine that needs repainted after using the rubbish simoniz primer). I will be building lowrider at some point but what it will be is undecided, and theres a 40 ford pick up with an Ls currently sitting in stripper (many thanks to SamIAm for the parts needed) I'll probably have a curbsides also. I've also got a soft spot for tractors so the porsche will be built, another grey fergie and the big brother. If I can find one of the amt bulldozers at a reasonable price I have a dio I'd like to build and I'd like to build a garage of some sort to use up a lot of the knick knacks and left overs I seem to have gathered. This could all change as the year goes on

Lighten up, Francis. B) In 2020 I did FIVE original AMT '66 Mustang fastbacks IN A ROW, and then, for the cherry on top, Snake-Fu'ed a '94 Mustang promo. No Mustangs on my dance card at the moment, but I do have a glue bomb-ish toy show '66 HT I've been meaning to finish off. Might get in the mood to do Dyno Don's '68 428 CJ Super Stocker, and there's an outside chance I could do his '75 Mustang Pro Stock--I just got the decals for it.

Have three Cougar projects in mind. One is a complete rebuild to factory/box stock of a glue bomb. I have all the parts. Second is a rehab of a survivor I built in 1968. Third is a full custom--I have a spare body and a set of all the custom parts, just need to pick up an organ donor reissue '69 for the chassis, engine, interior, and glass. Be interesting to see if I actually get to any of them.

Maybe, but 2020 was the third year in a row in which I finished 40 model car projects. (Only three of those were from-new-kit builds; 18 were glue bomb or survivor restorations or rescues, and the rest were diecast kits [easy] or diecast Snake-Fu's.) B)

Snake, I noticed at the top of your list was a 70 Superbird... I always thought it would be a fun challenge to try and replicate the smoke blowin’ Superbird/Daytona, whatever it was, that Joe Dirt drove and picked up his girlfriend/sister in, whichever she was. I know I won’t be getting to that anytime in the near future, but would love to see someone’s attempt at it.?

I want/need to finish my 4 ongoing Mustangs.

Then move onto a Ford LN 8000 Race Car Hauler with a sleeper.

I do want to build a black extended flatbed semi trailer for my black and gold Freightliner I finished this year.

I have so many cool kits but not enough time.

Like most everyone else I reserve the right to deviate at any time with whatever strikes my fancy. Like Tom, I claim the "Look a Squirrel!" defense. (Must go with the name.) But, I do have a few that I would like to get to in 2021. Seeing as I managed to finish the most I ever have in a year (12) this year I think the coming year may be pretty productive. So, here goes:

1. Fujimi Toyota S800 racing version

2. Tamiya Honda S800

3. 32 Ford Sedan (can't believe I've never completed any version of a 32 Ford)

4. Finish My 51 Chevy Fleetline  "Boulevard Creeper" (my version of Voodoo Larry's Voodoo Creeper)

5. Finish my Custom 53 Ford Victoria

6. Finish my 65/ SN95 Mustang combo

7. Finish my 75/06 Mustang combo

8. Monogram Sea Quest DSV Stinger (for something completely off the wall)

9. Jimmy Flintstone Resin 41 Chevy COE

10. Finish my 41 Chevy lowrider pickup

That should be enough to keep me busy and hoping that I can get a few of them off the list and onto my shelf.

I look forward to seeing what you guys have planned.

Later-

Actually finish a model this year, and the ones in particular that I want to finish are the Red Devil Cadillac v-16, the '32 Imperial, and the '29 Roadster.

The last thing I need is a new project, but after having another Jo-Han Cadillac practically drop in my lap, and looking at the unbuilt Lindberg Auburn in my stash, I am sorely tempted to try duplicating this Pininfarina bodied speedster.

I've learned to plan on no more than a pair of finished projects for the year as of late.

This year, I "WILL" complete my current 1968 HEMI Coronet R/T project.

After that, it's up in the air, but candidates include a '64 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, '64 Pontiac LeMans convertible or a '63 Buick Riviera......or any one of a half dozen other projects that I have my eye on.

Most likely, next year's 2021 "finished" review in the Under Glass section will be the '68 Coronet, and the '64 Bonneville.

I'm with Guido. I only finished one this year, although my to-do list continues to be lengthy. However, New Year's Resolutions are all about unfettered optimism, right?

And to quote The Two Toms, "like most everyone else I reserve the right to deviate at any time with whatever strikes my fancy. Like Tom, I claim the "Look a Squirrel!" defense."  I agree, we must go with the name.

Having said that, there are some specific projects queueing up.  Here's my current fire apparatus workbench staging area:

image.png.686ae4b84a6585361daf8878f77a503e.png

1970 Crown Firecoach, Engine 51

1972 Dodge Squad 51 (hiding)

1950-60 Seagrave Sedan Pumper (2), agencies TBD

1969 American LaFrance Pumper, Manitou Springs FD

1970 American LaFrance Ladder truck, agency TBD (Not shown)

1970 American LaFrance Snorkle truck, agency TBD

** The eagle-eyed among you have noted the dark gray shape behind the two resin Seagrave Sedan Pumpers. That is one of the ten (only) fiberglass originals laid up by Michael Eisbrenner in 1981. It is now 40 years old! It will not be built and will continue to live on in its original, unmolested condition.

And, not staged for photography, but the police car workbench is populated with these projects (in various states of completion):

1957 Chevrolet Phoenix Fire Chief car

1957 Chevrolet Phoenix Police car

1978 Chevy Nova Denver Police car (Greg Wann resin)

1978 Chevy Nova El Paso County Sheriff car (Greg Wann resin) replica of my patrol car

1962 Studebaker Phoenix Police car (24 hour build?!)

1978 Chevy Nova (Greg Wann resin) agency TBD

1990 Ford Mustang AZ Highway Patrol car

1957 Ford Barton County Sheriff car

1950 Olds Hoisington Police car

1975 Chevrolet (Modelhaus resin) agency TBD

1985 Chevrolet (Modelhaus resin) agency TBD

1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass El Paso County Sheriff car, replica of my unmarked patrol car

1978 Dodge Monaco El Paso County Sheriff car, replica of my unmarked detective car

1981 Dodge Diplomat El Paso County Sheriff car, replica of my unmarked detective car (die cast conversion)

1968 Plymouth El Paso County Sheriff car (restoration of old built-up)

1974 Dodge Monaco Manitou Springs Police car (die cast conversion)

1974 Dodge Monaco Colorado State Patrol car (die cast conversion)

1941 Plymouth police car, agency TBD

Okay, it's an overly ambitious list. But I figure it will carry me through 2025 or 2035 without requiring the tedious re-listing every December!

Happy New Year, and, Stay Tuned.

??

I pray my MS lightens some so I can build and enjoy som kits. How many is up to how things go. I do get to watch everyone build in the meantime.....

Good luck Carl, and if you can't progress your own builds do keep calling in and joining in with what everyone else is up to.

The family were in the shed the other day and realised quite how many kits have been accumulating, and after a record 2020 with 17 completions I would like to keep being as productive as I can to show I'm not just hoarding them......

My plans are:

1. Finish '55 Chevy today for this B.O.Y.D. round.

2. Finish '67 Impala.

3. Finish Corvette ZR-1 curbside that I've just started (was engine donor for the '67).

4. Finish Ghostbusters Cadillac hearse conversion in the next B.O.Y.D. round - like the '55, that's another WIP that was started 25+ years ago.

5. Finish 1981-ish Nissan Skyline, the last of my sun-damaged replacement builds.

6 & 7. Finish BMW M635 and Toyota Celsior (Lexus LS400) reshell projects.

8. Get on with the Ford Courier + Thunderbird V6 engine that I have barely started.

I think that clears my bench of all current WIPs, which would be pretty remarkable, giving me licence to get on with a mix of straightforward projects and a few that will take a bit longer. The easy ones will be whatever takes my fancy, inspired by seeing something at 1:1 or the right combination of subject vehicle, colour and wheels, but for the slightly more complex builds here are just a few of what I'd like to do (or at least start):

9. Various projects utilising 1980s and '90s Mustang/Viper/Corvette/Skyline/RX-7 etc engines in older cars/trucks.

10. AMT '71-ish Mustang as an early 1980s UK street machine with polished tube gille and Centerlines, to fulfil an image I've had in my mind for 35+ years.

11. Stretched Aoshima Subaru Sambar kei-truck with recovery body carrying a Hasegawa Subaru 360.

12. Tamiya Morris Mini done as a 1970s/80s street machine with vinyl top and opera windows.

13. Ford Escort Mk2 as an early '80s National Hot Rod (short oval racer).

14. Datsun 280ZX as a Saloon Stock Car (short oval racer), driven by local legend Horry Barnes (RIP) who raced into his 80s.

15. Loose replicas of various 1:1 Datsun/Nissans I've had/still have.

Like most of us, the list will change as more kits get purchased and new opportunities present themselves.....
