Nice work Kurt! This is really coming along nicely. Sounds like some of the usual kit bash/scratch build drama. You are making it look easy sir!

Cheers, Steve

Drama.... that sums it up very well.  ?  Thank you!

Futzed with the engine this afternoon.  First thing I tried to do was get the resin radiator flat, put in very hot water, it bent nicely, but about an hour later it was back to "normal".  It will be forced flat when glued in!  I had to put some sort of engine mounts in, could not rely on the transaxle.  After making three sets, got good enough mounts (arrow).  The next part to see if it didn't fit was the exhaust downpipe with what looks like a catalytic converter.  Of course it interferes with the suspension sub frame (arrow).  I really gooped in some Tacky glue to get the engine/transaxle set in place.  There are several other parts such as a battery to fit, with some sort of mounts.  Debating how to deal with the other suspension cross member, the exhaust pipe could be replaced with a solder wire to re-route, or I could just blow that part off.

Went for something easy.  The roof rack needed mounts, could not just stick it on the roof.  Measured and marked with masking tape, scribed deeper grooves, cut aluminum flashing, and glued on.  After painting will add photo-etch bolts.

Looking good bro

Thanks!

A bit tired, but *had to* work on the engine bay some more.  Made mounting things for some of the accessories.  Made a different strut brace, will try to get in straight during final assembly.  The engine kit comes with factory air intake and filter parts, but also this cool aftermarket filter.  Aluminum wire, aluminum newspaper printing plate, have a cold air box.

LOL, i don't think you need it, but is turning more the awesome, the inner walls fit almost perfect,  this type of work make me want to do something like that, but i don't a kit like this, well, besides the Ford GT40 that come like that without engine, but that will be a lot of work for sure...

Every picture I look at has a hundred hoses and/or wires in there, could just toss a mangled mess onto the engine and call it good.  ?  I have 6 engines for curbside models, not counting the Hellcheetah, so that is about 100 years of projects right there.

Every hot rodded Subie has to have Hella Supertone horns.  Most of them are red, but there are many colors available.  I'm surprised nobody makes these for models, with 3D printing it can't be difficult; found the dimensions.
1755211975_HellaSupertonedimensions.jpg.78d289cd2f52f088a6afe75d7fb8e3d9.jpg

Used the cordless drill, Dremel, and a bunch of other tools.  I save lots of sprue, this was the biggest I had.

Despite having more to do on the chassis and engine area, wanted to get started on the body!  First up was the Tamiya white primer, first time for me (have used the grey).  Then gloss red, for the kit's fire safety equipment, scratch-built strut brace, and of course the horns.  Also decided last minute to do the rally light, thought it would add pizazz, and of course at night with the light on won't make any difference.  ?  Flat black for the roll cage and some other parts.  Instructions call for German Grey, but for some reason hobby shops never have it in stock, used 'battleship gray' for the seats and door panels.  Then gloss black for the rally light and fuel cap, which will get Alclad 'chrome'.

Awesome detail work man

I'm giving' it all she's got Captain!  ?

I really like Alclad 'chrome' for light reflectors.  I was not happy with the resin copy of the gas filler, found a better copy and also painted chrome.
IMG_0946.thumb.jpg.4180214a754c026ab021dc4154ef76bd.jpg

Painted the body gloss black.  Still not a smooth finish, might polish some and repaint.

Back to futzing with the engine.  Solder used for a new pipe.  But now the steering rack is needing something, needs to be re-located.   I've modified such a unit before, using a tube, drilling the bellows, with a wire going through (funny that was a Tamiya curbside with engine transplant).

amazing update detail Kurt

? I've entered the make-a-mountain-out-of-a-molehill stage.

Steering rack has been modified.  I know the reason Tamiya does this part in one piece, to keep it simple.  When the skid plate is put on, none of this will be seen anyway, so I might not put it on.  I'm afraid to look up what the steering rack really looks like, must be the shaft from the steering wheel coming in with u-joints galore.  I think the part with the triangular supports is the sway bar, couldn't keep the chassis mounts so tossed them.

Drew the part before cutting, to know the length.  Used the thin wall steel tubing, so the bent wire could be shoved through.   Managed to not jab my fingers when drilling the holes. ?

IMG_0955.thumb.jpg.cfb4e859edc7569fc8c1c6265b99c552.jpg

Needed to bend the solder exhaust even more, and cut into the oil pan to get clearance.
IMG_0956.thumb.jpg.c4fec224019ced4290200ad6d86e38e6.jpg

Used the cut off rod, and part of the interior (so far all parts are scrounged from kit offcuts) to fabricate new chassis mounts (red arrows).
IMG_0957.thumb.jpg.aa92b6815d0bfc6b8e547ea7023b8bb2.jpg

I drilled holes first, then knife cut the rack mounts, which were glued to the sway bar part.  The rack snaps in, great for mocking up.

Getting the engine catalytic converter placed and spliced with the kit exhaust is next.

Got the exhaust pipe done.  Moved the cat upward a bit, cut some of the kit pipe off, plugged into the middle of the cat, not the corner.

Quick wet-sanded the body parts, then painted again.  Added the chassis and door mirrors.  Tried a little more thinner, and more volume with slightly higher pressure, trying to get less orange peel, but instead screwed up the paint.  I just can't lay down a decent paint to save my life! ?
IMG_0963.thumb.jpg.16e53e7553a2360b15ec397234292d54.jpg

So more wet-sanding, and leave it like it's sunburned, then add the fake rust decals that come in the Revell '29 Model A Roadster kit?  I'm thinking that will be a good camouflage, like who would have a hot rod with a patina finish, on a Subaru?

More paint, last of what can be masked and airbrushed (other than the dash).
IMG_0972.thumb.jpg.c33fa72fba06c3119ffac78b29dcba21.jpg

Which means brush painting the last details.  It's a weakness of mine, to brush paint.  Changing some of the colors, such as the shocks are Bilstein yellow/blue.  The instructions show the exhaust pipe is flat white, I did steel.
IMG_0974.thumb.jpg.a3dbc9362f159933c5b0eac519de7242.jpg

Not going to use some of the Scale Motorsport parts, such as the wipers and hood pins, too finicky a detail but the hood pins are really nice and will end up on something else.  What is disappointing about the detail set, no seat belt buckles, so deciding whether I will use another detail set in the stash, along with red craft paper.

Scooby doo is really coming along Kurt !

Nice detailing too??

Thank you for checking in!  ?

I'm trying not to take pictures of every step, it's just painting.  ?  How many models have decent cooling fans?   Some detail will never be seen, like the holes on the fans.  I thought bending the blades would be a nice detail.
IMG_0975.thumb.jpg.0a9779514b22c4ff2e0795502854d6e3.jpg

I was afraid there will be a clearance issue, and sure enough.  Glued the fans in with Tacky glue, so they can be removed.  When slipping the engine in, yea, figures (arrow).

Not excited about the prospect of cutting the radiator off, but there is not enough room in front either.  Being part of the chassis gives it strength, so I will glue in a steel brace after removing it.  That's funny, only after taking pictures and looking at them, do I see such things as the fans are left/right. ?

I shouldn't bag on Scale Motorsport, their quality is really good, and they offer stuff that nobody else will do.  They seem to use aerospace tolerances which is not applicable for dunderheads like me.  The brake disks had zero slop, so they didn't fit down onto the surface, and you can't bend them without wrecking the look, so don't look at the edges.  ?  There a are tiny AP logos to put on still, will do at the very end.  Some projects I've made real springs, looks better than this.
IMG_0979.thumb.jpg.75d451b67bb0dd71edc75f7699c50ab5.jpg

The Tamiya level of detail is really amazing, the suspension is beautiful.  Then it will be covered up by aero and skid plates.  They are molded in clear, beautiful satin finish, but it's still sort of lame.  The front won't fit because I modified the steering rack part, no big deal for this project.  The Lexus muffler looks like I planned it.  ?

Cut the radiator off using the Tamiya scriber at first, then the Xacto blade.
IMG_0983.thumb.jpg.05bf43b66f29189b1313f3ff6a422267.jpg

Made the radiator supports from Evergreen square rod.  The Hobby Design photo-etch radiator faces projected from the kit radiator, so I can slip it down the supports. Have zero clearance, but the engine stuffs in okay.

Need to make new radiator hoses.   Decided to use part of the skid pan, cut with the hot-wire against a steel ruler.  I sanded the cut and then painted later.

Found radios, and started on the antenna mount, pictures when all that is done.

Just when I thought the engine bay was full!? I love the bent fan blades - definitely a contender for the hidden detailing award!?

Can always throw more under the hood.

Good day for working on a model.

I have several copies of the MOVE OVER from a previous project, this is the perfect application.  Thin wire, folded over paper glued with Titebond, drilled holes in the roll cage.

Spent this afternoon on interior detail painting, and the first decals.  I'm still undecided on the seatbelts, have the red paper just in case.
IMG_1007.thumb.jpg.8ec7330c67571ce8b2e4354868225bfd.jpg

The only kit decals are on the seats, fire equipment, and 2 on the dash.  Aftermarket gauge decals put in the stock pod.  The CB and scanner are mounted in an aluminum strip.

The Scale Motorsport photo-etch has straps and buckle, 2 short and 2 long, but not a third.  I just didn't want to screw with it, bending just right and gluing on.  I love to use aluminum duct tape, can cut any width, and it sticks itself, no messy glue, and I like the shiny finish.  The third part would not have had the same p-e.  Also, the biggest part has the strap go under the black detail.  It would have been nice to have p-e vents instead, but the detail set eliminated vents altogether.

Much of the interior is done.  Have ideas for extra stuff to add.
Some details glued into the engine bay.  I didn't plan the brake cylinder placement correctly, so I imagineered a fix using a Celica oil pan for a detail.

Scale Motorsport plates were used in the driver footwell.  I like the aluminum sticker that Tamiya has for the floor panel.
