I’ve noticed that the earliest versions of the original ones are always lacking a heat shield/ (cold air box) around the carbs, but at some point it appears that all of them wind up having it installed... apparently to protect from vapor lock? I am currently trying to scratch build my own heat shield/ (cold air box) which is proving to be quite challenging. Venom Posted January 21, 2021 Author Share Posted January 21, 2021 (edited) I provided these construction tips as a basis, but please note that there were several other steps I had to perform in order to get the finished result. I have a lot of experience cutting vinyl patterns and I will say that this was a very challenging and delicate piece to create. I just hope it works as expected to! Forgot to mention, the curved part is a piece of tin cut from a tin pan. The chrome vinyl is not capable of holding such a bend. Thanks Trevor. It’s the vinyl that is used in sign businesses. They always have scrap that they can no longer use in their plotters and usually have no problem giving it away free. There are several types of the (chrome) vinyl - different thicknesses, finish, flexibility, etc. Some feels more like actual vinyl, some feels more like super thin metal. The kind I like and used above is the kind that feels like super thin metal, it’s about the thickness of notebook paper, if not slightly thinner and it has a perfect mirror finish - some have a slightly hazy mirror finish. Anyway, just call your local sign business and ask them if they have any chrome vinyl scrap - I found it’s the easiest way to acquire it. Last time I got some it was about 2ft x 6in worth - that’s enough for a lifetime of models. If you cannot get it from them free, you could probably buy sections of about 12” from them. My first resin kit too. I understand that for a resin kit it is pretty clean from the start, that’s what I’ve heard anyway. But since I’m only familiar with styrene kits, I find it to be much more cleanup than what I’m used to. I’m happy with the kit so far. Nothing really to criticize about it except the instructions need to be a little more visually informative...hopefully this WIP can aid in that area. **One thing I should note regarding cleanup, is that the body of this HMR is much cleaner than the bodies of the Revell Cobra kits! There are virtually no mold lines to deal with on the Daytona Coupe body. That is real nice! The parts I’ve found finicky to clean so far are the carb and suspension parts. MarkJ Posted January 22, 2021 Share Posted January 22, 2021 Thanks Josh. the kit is a 63 but im trying to change it into a 64. but I'm not real sure if the car I'm referencing for the build is a 63 or a 64. The one I'm building has a 64 rear glass which I have changed already, but I have seen write ups on the real car I am building and it is referred to as a 63 in some of the articles. Maybe late 63's had the 64 back glass. Your build will give me help on mine so I am watching it very carefully. I already learned something about the carbs which I think both of our cars shared. Just in case your cutting Venturi tubes out of hollow brass tubing as I did, make sure you use metal wire to push through the tubing rather than just string. In 1991 i'm riding my mountain bike in a residential area San Carlos California. Parked in front of someones house is a truck and trailer with this car in this condition . i know .....the odds of seeing a UFO are much higher and does not jive with story of this car hidden away somewhere in Los Angeles since the 60's. but there was no mistaking this car and why would you make a replica of a thrashed race car. Venom Posted February 2, 2021 Author Share Posted February 2, 2021 (edited) Hi all, So, after having to modify the cold air box and getting it installed, I re-cut the Venturi tubes and reinstalled the carbs and put some fuel injection lines in and made some throttle springs. I changed the oil filter from blue to white since blue ones don’t seem to exists in any of the old photos I’ve seen.. (I’m not really trying to be spot on accurate with this build, but I’d like to at least stay in the ballpark.) Looking at my own photos, made me want to clean things up a bit, so I removed the brushed on paint from the valve covers and sprayed them instead, and while I was at it I decided that black breather caps looked better than silver. I’m now happier with the overall appearance of the engine and, at some point, will also be installing plug wires. That’ll be exciting with the distributor half blocked and some fuel lines to negotiate. Yay! Im hoping to get some pics up later tonight of all these parts put together, except the wheels. As for the build, the parts have been fitting together beautifully so far except for the driveshaft was a bit too long, but that’s a simple fix with the x-acto. There was a problem with the four wheel axle ends... After all the parts were glued into place, I noticed that the four axle ends were clearly out of alignment (not parallel) with each other.🤔 All the other parts were a perfect fit like puzzle pieces, so it wasn’t because I’d done something wrong. I tried to slightly bend two of them and each one snapped,🤭... it actually ended up being the perfect solution. I was able to fix them with 15 minute epoxy which gave me time to align them. They are now much closer to perfect. Let’s just hope it doesn’t somehow come back and bite me in the butt later in the build!
