clear coat HELP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone im starting to have problems with bad cases of orange peel, i use duplicolor laq clear ,my base coat is great no orange peel until i apply clear coat, i use different color coat manufactures never used the same manufactures of color or clear ,never had problems mixing manufactures of clear and colors,if your wondering why i clear is because i have a habbit of sanding through color coat ,thats why i clear now. my room temp is 73degrees, 23 % humidity,i spray about 6inches from body ,i have tried different speeds at spraying different distances ,and im spraying out of can,,,i have an iwata gun and another one that has the bigger spray pattern that i seen here recomended, and i have two paasche h with #5 tips,,,,,,im afraid to use the spray guns cause i cant even get the can spray technique down . as i said im just starting to have these problems .never had them before useing the same clear, same technique , other then the room temp and humidy might vary very little, its getting so bad that im not wanting to spend that much time building because the rest of my builds are going beautiful until i get to the body painting, than it goes south. this used to be a hobby i loved for so many years but this body painting problem is driving me nuts.you can check out my gallery and see that for the most part they look ok to display ,,,,,but now i would be ashamed to post on here

I had issues with the last paint job I did with Dupli Color. It had a mottled look to it under the clear. The DC clear went on really orange peeled as did the paint. I pretty much switched to all Tamiya. Primer, paint and clear. I'll still use different paint occasionally. But, I always use Tamiya primer and clear.

Hi Bill!

It looks like your orange peel might be caused by the most common reason: too thick a second or third coat BEFORE the underlying coat has fully cured. This happens with almost any brand of clear, therefore, not really tied to the color coats underneath... UNLESS those are not fully "flashed" either.

Good luck!
