First junkyard build 90’s Silverado

Trying my hand at a kit I started about 25 years ago and did a poor job!   This will be a mash up on an old Silverado kit and part from the “extra parts box”. I’ve not done much model building in a while..and i’m Not near at the level as most on this forum.

here is the spare parts engine I’m going to use

poorly brush painted interior- lots of “unwanted texture”

25 year old Rattle can paint with lots more “unwanted texture”

 

I plan on sanding the body body to smooth it out and try a few different acrylic paints through and airbrush.  I’ve never used acrylic paint or an airbrush before so this is going to be interesting!  If nothing else, I hope to provide some comic relief!

I’ll keep this thread updated as I go along.  I work a lot so progress will probably be slow.

Ok. So I went to HarborFreight and bought the airbrush and compressor combo, the airbrush didn’t work at all.  Took it back and they gave me a new one. Good people.

went to hobby lobby and picked up some “all surface” craft paint and some plastic spoons at the supermarket.  I sanded some spoons down with 600 grit sandpaper and started experimenting 

The black ones are rough because I was learning and testing the durability of the paint. These are shot with the HarborFreight airbrush with no primer. Then “cleared” with future floor polish.

Once I got the hang of it, I wet sanded the old Silverado with 600 using the old black rattle can paint as a leveler.  I decided I would paint it what the bottle said was metallic black

I carely thinned the paint with windshield washer fluid til I thought it was right and started putting on thin coats, making sure the the last coat was total dry to the touch before moving to the next coat

Omce I had the coverage I wanted, I started putting the future on. Slowly at first them some really wet coats

I wish I could capture the color and shine on my iPhone ,  these pics really don’t do it justice!   I will never use a rattle can again. 

If I learned anything today, it’s that my spoon painting skills are stellar haha

Well, this has come to a screaching hault.  Missing too may of the small pieces to finish it out.  It was a sucess in the fact that I learned a lot about airbrushing and craft paints.  My confidence level has been boosted.  I'm going to try a new in the box kit with all the pieces now.

I have the same airbrush set up but haven't used it to paint a body yet. You have given me inspiration.
