gjorenby
Wow, what a miserable kit this is! Looking to build the Mustang Mach 1 with 429 Cobra Jet engine as used in James Bond Diamonds are Forever. (Yes, I know several cars were used with different engines and such, but the 429 CJ is the coolest). Anyway, the newly released "007" kit last year by AMT is just a repackaging of the old kits. They did update the front end and have the correct wheel covers and decals, but that's all. Thin brittle red plastic, inaccurate details and parts, and TONS of flash and mold lines to clean up. So, not happy with the inconsistencies from the movie car, I'm diving into some kit bashing and alterations. Starting with the chassis/engine bay. Kit parts --- well let's not go there. I had an old Boss 429 build from 30+ years ago I decided to sacrifice. The front end of the chassis with steering components fits nicely and the engine bay is now a little closer to accurate. I will use the back portion of the kit chassis as it fits better than the Boss part. But will use the Boss exhaust and other bits. Will keep you posted. cobraman
Good luck with your build. Much has been said about this kit.

Glenn may also want to use the gas tank from the Boss 429 as the old MPC one just looks small. There’s the dilemma of what engine to use/modify as we know the 428 engine is not correct from the AMT kit and the Boss 429 engine from the MPC version could be a starting point except of course the heads and valve covers and intake manifold are different from the CJ engine. I was digging though old magazine and found this article which claims the car Connery was a 429CJ Ram-air with appearance modification made to make sure the stunt cars looked the same. gjorenby
Neat article, thanks for posting! Not promising mine will look exactly like this but I will try. Anyone have the correct two spoke steering wheel (or a close match) for a 429 CJ engine for sale?
vamach1
I have only seen the two spoke wheel in a Motormax diecast but there may have been one in a S&H Torino kit. As for a 1/25 429CJ engine, best bet is the engine from the Revell Torino Cobra kit which has been out of production for a while or a modified 429/460 engine out of perhaps a Ford Pickup truck with a C6 automatic. gjorenby
Interior build nearly complete . Still looking for the correct two spoke steering wheel. Added flocking for carpet, a hurst shifter, door locks and photo etch window cranks. Was considering the grab handles on the door panels but could get the look I wanted. From this movie clip the main car had the fold down rear seat which of course is not in this the MPC based kit begin sold under AMT branding. When I have started to build a 71-73 Sportsroof Mustangs with an interior other than black I search online to see what the colors are as some parts are usually black and if it’s not a black interior then some items are another color (in this case red) such as the door panels and seats etc. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy. The more I know about the AMT and MPC kits the more frustrated I get with the issues they have. However, it’s all we have for now. Pleas note those speakers in the back are not factory (this is not the Bond car) and I’m nit sure what those metal rods are. vamach1
It took a lot of searching but I finally found a Sportsroof Mustang with an interior other than all black (in this case blue) to show the area of the rear deck shelf was black. My first Mach1 I doing in the 70’s had a black interior and did not have the fold down seat so I was not 100% positive that area would also be black regardless of the interior color. This picture is from an unrestored Mach1 without the fold down seats but it also has non-factory speaker grille cut into the rear seat side panels. Not sure if anyone else cares about these things but it may help somebody. Edited March 18, 2021 by vamach1
gjorenby
Making progress. Engine bay build out waiting for final touches. Used the bay from an old '70 Boss 429 kit I had and added scratch built braces. The 429 CJ engine is waiting to go in -- got it out of a '70 Ford Torino kit. Will use a couple of other detail items from the Torino kit as well. Also opened the hood intakes and filled in the cowl vent. Next to Mach 1 is a 1967 Camaro with 396 that is also a WIP. This will be Buddy Repperton's Camaro from the movie Christine, before Christine destroyed it.

The hood looks nice with the vents that are not supposed to be there you filled in. 👍

gjorenby
Tamiya Red (X-7) with a semigloss black for the bottom and engine bay. But then last night I mussed it up by masking the window trim off before it had fully cured....so into the magic dip it went and will be respraying in a few days. Same colors but will be more patient on cure time and then use a clear coat before applying any masking.
Snake45
Diamonds Are Forever is on Pluto TV (FREE!) this month. I just finished watching it.
vamach1
I found another movie that “starred” a Mach1. I have not seen the movie but that is an interesting “ad” on the roof. Someone beat me to it and built a nice replica complete with the driver. Edited October 1, 2021 by vamach1
Zippi
That 429 Cobra Jet is going to look mean setting in the business end of the Mustang. Nice work.
vamach1
Mr. Greenberg did a review of the 007 kit in Issue #211 which again pointed out the numerous faults with the kit that goes back to when it was under the MPC brand and was rebooted as a drag racer and Boss 351. Happy reading.
doorsovdoon
Great work so far. I'll be following, I have the '73 version to build soon and love adding extra detail to simple kits like this and researching what certain parts of the real car looks like.
