JollySipper
I've been wanting to build a '40 Coupe for a while. It worked out where I could get this one in a trade..... So far what I've done is to remove a little from the bottom of the body so it would appear to be sectioned a bit. This is about all that I could lower this without raising the fenders. I've also lowered the suspension front and rear. Wheels and tires are from a 1/24 '56 Thunderbird. Hopefully I'll have more progress tomorrow....... Thanks for looking, and comment freely! Marc Weller
Loving the t-bird wheel covers and the body mods and stance are terrific. Finish this one !!!
bisc63
Agreed; good start!
espo
I like your sectioning idea. Never realized that AMT issued the '40 in orange plastic. With this stance and the wide whites and full wheel covers I'll follow along.
Paul Payne
Use a good primer over that orange! Looking forward to where this goes.
JollySipper
Cool, I'm glad you guys are liking this...... I plan to try and seal the orange plastic with an aluminum paint, we'll see how well it works! Some more progress. The body and fender pieces have been sanded flat. There were some bad mold lines around the headlight area, so I sanded them down, too... I've also been working on getting rid of the molded in exhaust. I made some panels to hide it in the chassis rails...... I've got a good feeling about this project! Thanks......
JollySipper
I went ahead and painted the engine block for a couple of reasons. I wanted to see how this color would look, and I needed to test to see if spraying the aluminum paint over the orange would prevent bleed-thru....... Looks like it's gonna work. Thanks......... Bullybeef
How much did you cut off the body for the channel job?
CabDriver
Great start! You know it’ll be cool in the end if just the body and wheels mocked up look great before you’ve even started working on the thing!
JollySipper
Thank you, Jim! Bullybeef, all I did was mark a line at the bottom of the lower door hinge and remove what was below it...... I had to trim where the fender unit met the body, too.... It was about 3 scale inches.
slusher
Great start TJ!

So with that section work, will the hood still fit as designed or will you have to section that as well?

I'm thinking of leaving the hood sides open, so all I'll need to do is just remove enough to get things to line back up.... There will be more progress pretty soon! Bullybeef
Thank you, I’m looking forward to more progress as I’m considering doing a similar section. Learning where and what to cut is helpful!
stitchdup
Cool project TJ, I did the same to one a few years back and the hood was probably the hardest part to mod. I found it worked best for me to cut the back edge off before sectioning the rest to retain the shape. I only have this one pic of the cuts but it might help you
Casey
Looks good so far, T.J. Glad someone is working in it. 🙂
JollySipper
Thanks for the nice comments, guys...... I wanted to show you how I'm dealing with the hood. I wanted to do something different with this, so I decided to cut the hood sides at an arc..... This first pic shows the template I made so I would have something to follow with the scribing tool that I used. This is the passenger side before cutting.... and This is the driver's side after cutting...... Still need to slice up the interior bucket, then I can most likely get to painting some stuff....... Thanks, and comment freely!
JollySipper
Well, I got to painting some stuff...... We've had such nice weather here lately, I thought it a good idea to make use of it. It doesn't look really shiny in the pics, looks better in person. I'm thinking white running boards, definitely a white interior........ I can't use the hood, there's some sort of glue residue or something on it that kept surfacing thru the primer, so we'll say he's running this one without a hood....... Thanks, and comment freely.....
JollySipper
Got the white running boards and firewall done.......... Still need to cut up the interior, then I will be pretty close to able to button this one up! Thanks! and feel free to comment.......... espo
I like the way you're sectioning this body.
David G.
Excellent work on the body mods. Great color choice but I think the white is too stark in comparison. I think I would try a cream or ivory white. David G.
