Gramps46 Posted March 22, 2021 Share Posted March 22, 2021 1967 Ford GT MKIV Le Mans Winner I have been very fortunate to have visited the Henry Ford Museum twice and observe this iconic racer of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt. I started this Le Mans Miniatures 1/24 resin kit many years ago and it along with other Ford GT40s got stalled till now. I think LMM did a super job with the design and shape of this model though it is only a curbside with no engine. The changes I made to the kit were to add a passenger seat, modify the carburetors, add tire valves and wheel weights and replace the front jack forks. I also reduced the size of the side number lights which I felt were oversized and did not look right. The tire lettering was too big for my comfort and was replaced. papajohn97 Posted March 24, 2021 Share Posted March 24, 2021 A very clean, realistic, beautiful build of a very historic race car that we very rarely see in a hand built scale model. If I’m not mistaken, isn’t this is the car that Dan G. climbed out of and started the champagne spraying tradition in the winner’s circle? I haven’t yet visited the HF museum to see the 1:1 but did get a chance to see it at a Gurney tribute weekend at Laguna Seca in 2010 (along with all of his beautiful eagles). Scalemates.com list a 1/24 injection molded kit of a Mk IV made by Nakamura back in the ‘70’s - has anyone ever seen this kit sold or built? I wish Fujimi would produce a Mk IV along with an early series Ford Mirage in 1/24. You can only build so many GT-40’s (or not!). Thanks for sharing! What you don't see are the problems I had with the old and thin decals so the end result is a combination of kit decals and Fred Cady decals. Nakamura did in fact make a plastic kit of the MKIV though i have not seen one. Renaissance also made a resin kit in 1/24th scale which I plan to build as the Sebring winner. Here is the Renaissance kit which is very nice and three pictures of the Nakamura kit on Ebay for $200. These are about the only options other than the old MPC and IMC/Testors kits. Excellent build and great photos, Gary - I too have this one in my stash and will keep your pics for building. Concerning Nakamura, I had long time ago their '67 Lola T 70 Mk III which was a pain to look at - it was a bad caricature of a racer and I got rid of it as soon as I could. I have their Abarth 2000 prototipo pininfarina which also asks for a lot of cratchbuidling - if this is an indication of the Nakamura Mk IV, then buyers beware! Bill J Posted April 7, 2021 Share Posted April 7, 2021 Very nice MK IV. Looks like the real car. I do believe that LMM made the best MK IV. I wish they stll sold the Gurney/Foyt car. I would love to build one. I have one of the LMM GT-40 MK I kits, the full detail one. Directions are limited and there is a lot to the kit. I have looked it over a time or two but always close the box back up. LMM are very nice people to deal with. Angèle goes all out to please.
