The Transaxle From The Porsche 550 Spyder James Dean Died In Is For Sale

Recommended Posts

It's my understanding, that the entire car was stolen.( it was being transported on a truck from point A , to point B . The truck arrived at point B , but the car was gone.)

If the transaxle is for sale, I believe its stolen, and the seller probably has the rest of the car.

This is the story that I have heard various versions of for years. I don't know how true it is, but all of the versions are similar. The engine and transaxle were pulled from the salvaged car, separated, and went on to kill and maim others. If it is true(ish), the engine and transaxle wouldn't have been part of the rest of the wreck that was paraded around.

I have been through the intersection of 41 and 46 many times, and it has changed a couple of times over the years. I never saw the way it was in 1955 because Dean was far from the only person killed or severely injured there. By the time I first ventured through there in 1981 to visit a friend in SLO it had already been much modified from its original configuration and has been changed again since.

Barris never missed out on a chance to make a dime, and he parted out the car. After all, it was no longer really needed.
