CabDriver
Thanks everybody! Still plugging away at this one…mostly on some of the less interesting bits… This thing will likely be going on a base so I didn’t need to weather the chassis (but I did anyway). Just kinda rusted it up and made it look dirty and neglected in case anyone ever peeks under there: Ruined the wheels too - painted them steel Alclad then added salt and then painted the body color on there, weathered the hubcaps and gave them a wash and then distressed the whitewall on the tires and dulled them down with pastels: Started abusing the dash - not done with this yet… Ditto the interior - I’m not going wild and ruining the inside because no one wants to drive a car and have a seat spring sticking in their backside or whatever…just dirtying it up a little with some weathering: Installed glass and started weathering that too: And that’s about it for my Saturday at the bench today: I love doing these patina’d projects but they’re SO MUCH work compared to NOT ruining something 😂😂 More soon! I agree! Aside from the additional work of the techniques themselves, getting the right level of distressing without overdoing it is so much more of a challenge to me than building a model with a "fresh off the floor" finish. There's also a certain level of randomness to the process that to me, adds some artistic feel to it. I do build both ways of course because I don't like to limit myself. Yours is coming along great! I think your decision regarding the interior is a good one. David G.
CabDriver
Thank you sir! Wrapped this one up today, mostly…this being a snap kit it practically falls together. Got engine built, and the major assemblies together: And whilst the glue was drying on the lights and door handles and other delicate little bits I ran to Michael’s and grabbed a little wooden base and these bits from the model railroad stuff: I painted the wooden base with primer, then some crackle medium and finally acrylic paints, masked out some road markings and added the green bits (which I then airbrushed with some brown colors to deaden them up a little: This little base fits the car perfectly! Next up, cut a mask to lay some lettering down on the road there: Painted it white: Then cut another mask, and shot some red over THAT, followed by some freehand misting and a few splatters: And that’s about a wrap on this one! Could’ve gone more detailed but I really just wanted to get this idea out of my head and onto my shelf so I could stop thinking about it! Thanks for following along! Spex84
Super cool! I love the cracking effect; I wonder if it's achievable with readily available ingredients (as opposed to buying special hobby finishes). I might have to give it a try... I bet you could achieve something similar with gently laying lacquer over enamel - and I've found that Future over Tamiya GLOSS acrylics (not matte) will spiderweb and crack like this too after a week or so. Lots of fun ways to not get paint right to our advantage

Early on it got little respect from the shiny guys. You’d see people say things like, “if you ruin the paint job you can always smear some dirt on it and make a beater!” As if it was that easy! Super project Jim! I enjoyed following along!
