1959 Ford Galaxie Skyliner Rectractable Hardtop

Here is another of my old builts: dates from 1988/89 - built from the 1988 "Skip's Fiesta" issue (probably because of the Olds Fiesta hubcaps ?) - therefore it could not be built strictly stock (wheels look like 1/24 - diameter a bit too large for my taste, stance also too high). The kit dates back to 1959, and it shows: multipliece body which needs careful and exact positioning and test-fitting of the body parts before gluing, then some filling and sanding before painting.

Spray-painted from the can, trim is silver paint, rear lights transparent red (on chrome), license plates once again from the 1961 auto world sheet. The crude mechanism ("Fred Flintstone type") of the folding top gave me something to think about, but the problems could be solved with the help of cyanacrylat super-glue: to my surprise, it works quite well (needs careful handling, though), but leaves a noticeable gap in the roof.

The photos are from 2005, but I still have this one in my collection.

Now the model - don't ask me about the name of the color (automotive lacquers from Duplicolor or Auto-K) - I cannot remember anymore...

Beautiful job on an ancient kit! I’m really impressed that you were able to get the roof retraction mechanism working. I remember looking down into the rear roof storage bay in a 1:1 Ford Retractable at a car show years ago and being mystified by all the linkages, relays and wiring. Looked like a nightmare to do repairs on.

Nice looking Skyliner.  I remember these back in the day as a kid.  The old fellow at the end of the block had one.  At least I think that's what is was, it had a retractable hard top.

Thank you, Bob - I saw one decades ago at a US car meeting.

Very well done , it looks beautiful !  As primitive as the top mechanism may be it still looks great !

Thank you, Bob - though it is very crude, surprisingly it works!

Thank you, John - I too was skeptical during building if it would work, but it does!

Very nicely done. The work on the top mechanism looks quite clean.

Thanks, Trevor - it did need the use of superglue, though (first it fell apart a few times).

Beautiful looking Skyliner, I love the colour combo. Real nice work getting the roof mechanism functioning.

Thank you Gareth - all I needed is some patience and super glue....

Looks perfect!  I have this kit too, but I haven't found the courage to start it yet 🙂

Thank you, Michal - just try it, it is not that hard to build.
