Green Elephant Vega body color

Recommended Posts

Rather than hijack one of the other threads about the Green Elephant, I decided to start another one. I had tried for over a month prior to the arrival of my kit to locate Testors #1835 Lime Ice, with absolutely no success.  After I received my kit about 10 days ago, I decided to try painting the body with Tamiya TS-52, Candy Lime Green.  The body was assembled, the seams filled and sanded, painted with two coats of Taimya fine white primer, resanded, two coats of of Tamiya AS-12 Bare metal silver and finally two coats of Taimya TS 52.  I am not good with an air brush, so all coats were shot from rattle cans.  I am happy with the finish, but very unsure about the color.  Your thoughts and comments welcome!

Okay fellow modelers, here is an update on the body.  I am calling the painting of the body finished.  I took a slightly different approach after the feedback I got.  I sprayed a coat of dark grey (not black....I just couldn't spray it black!) then resprayed two coats of the Tamiya TS-52 Candy Lime Green.  I am much happier with the color than my original effort. It may not look like it in the photos, but it is quite a bit darker than it was in the original post.  Again, thoughts and comments welcome.

A separate question for you all that are working on this model.  I know that the injector/blower hat is not correct for the actual car.  Is the Competition Resins Crower 8 point injector and hat a more appropriate substitute??  Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I wanted to give you a heads up on the decals if you don't mind. I started laying some down on the body today. First, they release from the paper pretty fast. Second, the hood decal... I could not get it to lay down as I would have liked. I did use Solveset setting solution which did help but it was/is still not great. You may have different results and I hope you do.

I'll let you know how mine turn out.  I will let the body sit for a while and work on the engine and frame before I proceed with decals.

Thought I'd post an update on the progress of my Atlantis Green Elephant.  I have the frame assembled and some of the tin on.  I've got it on its wheels!  The fuel tank, cockpit tin and  select chrome pieces are painted with Tamiya TS20, Metallic Green.  The same paint is used on the green pieces on the engine I've also made some progress on the engine, although I'll be redoing the ignition wires after I receive a shipment of parts from ProTech.  The blower hat is not glued on, just setting there for its good looks.  Comments welcome!

Looks good to me ! Mine will be done today or tomorrow. Please don't take this as me telling you what to do but you may ( I say may ) have a problem lowering the body down on the chassis due to the engine wires. They look good but may stick up too high.

Thank you for the observation.  I'm not at all pleased with the kit spark plug wires which is why I bit the bullet and ordered a complete set of wires and boots from ProTech.  I'll be replacing the kit supplied set as soon as the ProTech parts arrive.  I'm hopeful that the ProTech parts will be MUCH more flexible (I've never used their products but have read and heard lots of good things) and allow me to bend the wires the way I want them.

I know it 's been a while since I update my Green Elephant.  We have been going to sprint car races and I took a break.  I was pretty disappointed in the way the engine looked, so I took a step back and decided to go the extra mile and ordered a bunch of Pro Tech Model parts and took a leap of faith and ordered a resin Crower 8 port injection body and hat.  After removing the wiring and starting all over with the Pro Tech parts and using the braided lines for the fuel and oil lines I am much happier with the results.  I am not a good enough modeler to do justice to the Pro Tech detail parts and the LPH 1320 Model Products resin Crower injection body and hat but they provide a much more realistic look and I am very pleased with the end results.

Here is another update on my Green Elephant kit.  I have the engine mounted in the chassis and all the fuel plumbing done (HALLELUJAH!!!) and I've modified the body tin.  Having built numerous Revell 1/16 funny cars, I have learned to modify the tin in order to get the body to sit down properly on the chassis and get the "attitude" appropriate for a 70's era funny car.  After installing the LPH 130 Model Products incredibly detailed Crower injection and hat, I realized that the new parts would also require me to modify the doghouse area of the tin as well.  I added 5mm of height to the doghouse area and tapered it back to fit behind the windshield.   As always, thoughts and comments welcome!

Keeping this in the WIP for a few more days.  This thing has fought me every step of the way recently.

I am very disappointed in the decals.  I am not perfect by any stretch, but no matter how much Micro Sol I used (and it was considerable!!) and how much heat from a hair dryer I used, I couldn't get the decals to lay flat on some of the curves.  They either wrinkled or they bubbled up after I thought they had set.  I have ordered new set of decals from Atlantis, but I don't anticipate them being a whole lot better.

I am pretty happy with the stance of the body on the frame and how it sets when assembled.  I did raise the rear axle and changed the doghouse on the interior tin (maybe a fraction too much!) both to clear the LPH 1320 Crower injection and hat, and to get the stance a little lower in the front of the car.  I am very pleased with the LPH 1320 Crower parts!  The detail was outstanding and they are much more representative of the car as it raced in its time.  The wiring and plumbing is from ProTech Model Parts.  Much thanks to them!!  I had never used their parts before and contacted them and they certainly steered me in the correct direction!

I have a few things yet to complete.  I am in the process of building a different parachute mount so that I can mount two parachutes (every picture I can find of the car has it with two chutes, not a single) and mount the chute lines.  I still need to install the headers, and of course finish the decals.

It is certainly not perfect, but truth be told, it is about the best I can do at this point inmy life!!  Thanks for looking and as always comments welcomed!

Have you considered using Slixx decals?  Has anyone on the forum used them?

Later,

Lee

Unless I am missing something, the Slixx decals for this version of the Green Elephant are only available in 1/25 scale.  This model I am building is 1/16 scale.  Thank you for the suggestion though!
